Sunshine & Socializing By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As I sit here on deadline, writing my column at the eleventh hour – as usual – is it wrong that the only thought I have is how I would rather be lying on the beach, soaking up the sun, on this fine spring day? Nothing against work – it just tends to conflict with the nice weather, you know? Sure, summer isn’t even officially underway yet, but the signs are everywhere. Concert schedules are out, vacations are being planned, baseball is in full swing – before you know it, it will be time to break out the
BBQ and open the pool for the first summer soiree. School? Work? Eh, plenty of time for that in the winter. Now it’s just a matter of coordinating all those fun summer plans, which is often easier said than done. Is it just me, or has it become increasingly difficult to set anything in stone? No matter the amount of advance notice, things always seem to fall through at the last second. Me, when I make plans, I stick with them. Barring an unexpected emergency, there is really no legitimate reason to cancel on someone. Call it a pet peeve, but there’s nothing worse
than looking forward to something only to have it cancelled. Kind of makes you not want to even bother. It’s almost better to play it by ear, see how it goes… and if things fall into place – great. If not, at least you didn’t waste your time getting your hopes up, right? I think that will be my mantra for this summer. Nice and relaxing. No stress, no aggravation, just enjoyment. And if, when all is said and done, that means lying on the beach by myself…so be it. I can think of worse things. See ya on the sand!

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army history, core values and traditions. Additional training included development of basic combat skills and battlefield operations and tactics, and experiencing use of various weapons and weapons defenses available to the infantry crewman. For the seventh year in a row, the Manetuck Elementary School Community Service Club held fundraisers to benefit the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation. Housed at the Atlantis Aquarium in Riverhead, this worthy organization is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of seals, sea turtles, whales, dolphins, and porpoises. The Manetuck Community Service Club sponsored a Walk For Marine Mammals in April in order to raise money for the Riverhead Foundation. It included all the Manetuck students, from kindergarten to fifth grade children, and took place in the bus circle outside of the building. It was an overwhelming success, with the students raising over $5,800! The students were excited and fortunate to be
joined on several mornings by biologists from the New York State Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle Rescue Program, the group that works directly with the stranded and injured animals found on our beaches. They walked with the students, sharing their firsthand knowledge of these animals. Part of the activities that involve Manetuck School includes an annual Seal Release. The Riverhead Foundation transports one of its rescued seals to the beach at Robert Moses State Park. Manetuck children and their families, as well as many staff members and their families, come to the beach to watch as the young seal is released back into the ocean, amidst cheering and encouragement. It is a heartwarming experience and an educational one, also, reinforcing the importance of caring responsibly for our Long Island wildlife. Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with autism on Long Island, will be dancing for a cause during Autism Awareness Month. Adults served by DDI will be partnering up with students of Vic D’Amore’s American Studio of Performing Arts to produce Dancing for Autism 2, Broadway Nights at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 7th at the Kings Park High School Auditorium. Tickets will be sold at $10 general admission or $7 for senior citizens and children under 12 to benefit DDI’s Adult Day Program. There will also be a special advance ticket package for $25 that will include special seating, a commemorative DVD of last year’s event, candy and custom event program. DDI’s Day Programs serve adults with developmental disabilities and autism at seven locations throughout Suffolk County. Day programs assist adults served by DDI with education, personal skills development, recreation and job training services to help prepare each individual to become productive members of the community in which they reside. The dance program originated with Melissa Espinal and Evens Bourisquot. Melissa is not only a student at the dance studio, but a DDI employee as well. Melissa and Evens’ determination and passion to bring the arts to the adults served by DDI
culminated with this very special collaboration with Vic’s studio. “I would like to acknowledge Melissa and Evens and the entire Adult Services Program staff for
coming up with this unique and entertaining event to showcase the abilities of the people we serve, commented John Lessard, DDI’s Executive Director. “I encourage everyone to come
