Twice a week, an instructor would come and teach the students dances such as the fox trot, merengue, tango and more. This led up to the culminating event, where the students performed the dances for the school and their families. A great time was had by all the participants.

Dating back to the days of the first automobiles, drivers have always taken on a degree of risk when getting behind the wheel and hitting the open road. While technology has done much to mitigate that risk, it’s also contributed to the growing number of distractions drivers face on the road. Distracted driving is a significant threat. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2012 more than 3,300 people were killed in crashes involving a distracted driver. Just a year earlier, 17 percent of crashes in which someone was injured involved distracted driving. Those figures are even more disturbing when one considers the problem of underreporting with regard to distracted driving. The National Safety Council notes that underreporting of mobile phone use leading to car crashes makes the issue of distracted driving appear less substantial than it likely is. Perhaps because they fear potential citations or even possible incarceration, many drivers involved in crashes do not admit to using mobile phones while driving. But a 2011 CDC study found that distracted driving is a genuine threat. In the study, survey participants were asked how often they had read or sent a text message or email while driving in the previous 30 days. Nearly onethird of study participants in the United States admitted

that they had, and those ﬁgures were similar in Portugal and Belgium. In addition, 69 percent of U.S.

Immigrant Experience During a recent reenacted Immigration Day event, fourth-graders at Bellew experienced firsthand what it was like for immigrants to pass through Ellis Island on their journey to the United States. The students had spent two weeks immersed in a social studies unit on immigration, learning about push and pull

factors, what it was like to leave the homeland and living conditions in the tenements, and used primary resources to study historical photographs and analyze the immigrant experience. During the culminating activity of Immigration Day, students participated in a reenactment of disembarking the ships, being interviewed by legal

inspectors and medical doctors, and ultimately facing deportation, detainment or entry into the United States. “The students came away with an experience that will always be remembered,” said Principal Rhonda Pratt. “It will certainly help them understand and appreciate what their IMMIGRANT EXPERIENCE - Fourth-graders at West Islip’s Paul J. Rosemarie Kupencow – “Rosie,” as I always affectionately called her – was the very first friend I made when I started working here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers, just about 11 years ago. her ﬂooded street, despite her repeated warnings that it probably wasn’t going to end well. She never did let me live that one down, deservedly so. But that was Rose, always dispensing advice – some solicited, some not so much – and serving as the unofficial “work mother” to many of the younger employees. In that capacity, a coworker and I took her along as a “chaperone” of sorts on my very first trip to Adventureland not so many years ago. As we made our way from one ride to another, taking care not to miss any, the air was filled with the sounds of screaming – not ours, but of our beloved Rosie, yelling, “Get me OFF this thing!!!” and “Why did I let you two talk me into this???” I don’t think I have ever laughed so hysterically in my life. Needless to say, that was our first and last trip to any amusement park. But the memories, well, those last a lifetime. (As does the framed photo of the three of us plummeting over “Adventure Falls” at the moment of impact, a priceless reminder of all the fun that was had that day.) Just last week, Rose lost her battle with cancer, leaving a giant void here at South Bay – and in my heart. Her selﬂess determination to continue on over the past year was a perfect example of the type of person she was, always putting others first while forging ahead. What an incredible person, one that is dearly missed by so many. I’ll miss her sitting in the “friend” chair on the other side of my desk, coming to chat about life and work and family and friends and everything in between.

I’ll miss our goodnatured teasing back and forth... her imitations of my ballet positions... her self-deprecating analysis of her “fashion” sense – “don’t have a hair clip, use a paper clip!”... our phone conversations – in spite of her staunch refusal to ever get a cell phone, and her insistence on keeping important phone numbers on a crumbled piece of paper in her pocketbook… just seeing her smiling face every day at the office. But mostly, I’ll miss my special friend. This past December, in celebration of her birthday, Rose and I went out to dinner. She may not have been feeling like her old self, but it was truly like old times. For over three hours, we sat and talked, just the two of us, reminiscing about the highlights and lowlights of our decade working together, chatting about the latest happenings in our lives… and we laughed, hysterically, about many of the same stories recounted here – and countless others, some not suitable for publication in a family newspaper! We could have continued talking for three more hours, easily; it seemed that neither of us wanted that night, that moment, to end. I will always treasure it. How lucky I was to have her in my life – there to guide the way as I began this new chapter all those years ago… and there to see me through the journey every step of the way since. Rose, you will never be forgotten – not by me, and not by those who had the wonderful pleasure of knowing you, of loving you, of having you touch their lives. May you be at peace now.

DANCING CLASSROOMS - Recently, the fourth and fifth grade students at Our Lady of Lourdes School in West Islip participated in a program called Dancing Classrooms. Twice a week, an instructor would come and teach the students dances such as the fox trot, merengue, tango and more. This led up to the culminating event where the students performed the dances for the school and their families. In June, a few select students will participate in The Colors of Rainbow Competition, where they will compete with other local schools who took part in the program.

Special Speaker St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School is proud to announce that Holocaust survivor, Werner Reich, spoke at their annual Day of Prayer on March 23rd. Mr. Reich has spoken in

many different venues all over the country. His presentation includes a brief history of the Holocaust and his personal story and experiences from the Holocaust itself.

Werner Reich spent over two years in captivity in Auschwitz I, Auschwitz II, and Theresienstadt, Czechoslovakia. He is hopeful that his presentations will allow the next generation to

One such activity was SSCM’s participation in a series of Video Conferences with the Milwaukee Public Museum, during which students learned all about “The Christmas

Guided instruction from experts in a dynamic digital setting keeps kids engaged and entertained while learning lots and allows teachers to then return to the classroom with hands-on activities that bolster that learning. Each year, in line with this program, the Milwaukee Public Museum offers schools the opportunity to share projects created by students who have participated in their Video Conferences. SSCM’s Fifth Grade teacher, Mrs.

Nicole Congro tasked students with thinking through what they’d absorbed during the session and transform the story into a 4-panel story board of their own creation. The students’ designs were wide and varied and showed how much they’d taken away from their far-away instructors in order to showcase their creativity and round out this virtual activity to make it a more authentic hands-on learning experience. Students from all across the country submit projects for consideration to the museum as part of this program, so the news was extra exciting that for the second year in a row, a number of projects from SSCM students have been selected and are on display in the museum’s Student Art Exhibit nearly 1,000 miles away! Congratulations to all the students who participated and especially to those whose projects made it onto the museum wall!
