Golf Classic Set Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center is teeing up its 19th Annual Golf Classic and Tennis Tournament on Monday, May 16th, 2016 at Glen Oaks Country Club in Old Westbury. The annual event, which is again sponsored by Astoria Bank, will offer golfers an opportunity to

play at this prestigious 27-hold course which has recently been selected to host the 2017 Barclays Tournament. The Barclays is the first event of the FedExCup Playoffs and features the top 125 in the FedExCup Standings. The Good Sam tennis tournament will return this year as well.

Kevin J. Mullins, MD, FASNS, FACS, Chief of Neurosurgery, Director of Neurological Services for Good Samaritan has been chosen as the Honoree and proceeds from the event will benefit Neurosciences at Good Samaritan Hospital. Golfers will enjoy a 10:30 a.m. brunch which

will be followed by a noon shotgun start. There will be a cocktail reception beginning at 5 p.m. and dinner and the awards ceremony will follow starting at 6 pm. The tennis schedule kicks off with lunch at 1 pm followed by warm-ups at 1:30 and a 2 p.m. start time.

I am thankful for my mom and dad. They are the water and sunlight to my plant. They’re the only true role models in my life. They pay the bills, put food in my stomach, and put clothes on my back. They are the most important things in my life. I am thankful for my mom. She is the star in my galaxy. She turned me into the nice gentlemen I am today. She fought through mental illness

two times. She taught how to act respectfully around people she puts in charge of me. She is the main reason I love to be alive. Also, if it weren’t for her, I wouldn’t be in Pal football. I wouldn’t be able deal with my grandfather’s recent trip to the E.R. I wouldn’t be able to keep going in life. Those are many reasons I am thankful for my mom. I am thankful for my dad. He’s the anchor in our ship. My dad makes

sure that the family is stable. He taught me how to defend myself, to ride a bike, and to be safe on the Internet. He makes me happy when I’m depressed. Also, he tells me what my dead grandfather expected of me. He taught me to be respectful to him and to the elderly. He gives donations to foundations for breast cancer and autism. Those are reason why I’m thankful for my dad.

LOCAL STUDENTS HONORED - The Town of Islip recently held its 38th Annual Student Achievement Awards ceremony, honoring dozens of students from throughout Islip Town in various scholastic and extra-curricular categories. In addition to recognizing students who have earned high marks in academic subjects, the ceremony also honors students who have made accomplishments in community service efforts, school clubs and athletics. Young Scientists Students in kindergarten through fifth-grade participated in the science fair at West Islip’s Manetuck Elementary School, displaying creative projects that explored the solar system, erosion, wind power, surface tension and the workings of the human lungs, and attempting to answer such scientific

questions as what makes pennies turn green, how crystals form and what blood is made of. The entire school toured the March 16th event during the day, with family and friends invited to visit that evening. All participating students received a ribbon for taking part in the science fair.

“The science fair was an optional learning experience that provided an extra opportunity for students to explore and enhance their knowledge in the areas of math, science and technology,” said Principal Dawn Morrison.

Basket Bounty For their spring service project, the student council of West Islip’s Udall Road Middle School conducted a schoolwide March candy drive for children with cerebral palsy, complete with weekly raffles and free prizes to reward those students who participated in the initiative. After school, guided by co-advisers Pamela Diorio and Kristine Hagens, members of the council constructed 80 Easter baskets for donation to

the United Cerebral Palsy Center in Commack. The 25 students, accompanied by the Easter Bunny, handed out the baskets to all of the 80 children at this center, where they were welcomed with open arms. “To see the excitement of the center’s kids as they met Mr. Bunny and received such festive handmade baskets was quite profound for the students of Udall to experience,” said Principal Daniel Marquardt. “The experience was

unforgettable for all involved and the council was invited to return again next year.” While visiting the center, the middle schoolers also were involved with music classes and instruction, visiting every classroom during their stay. “We are thankful to have this opportunity for our students to actually see where all of their hard work and efforts are going,” said Diorio.

Research Recognition

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Barraga recently met with Ted and his spouse Mary, to present Ted with a Proclamation honoring him for his military service. Ted volunteered for the United States Navy and served from 1964-1974. He was awarded the United States Navy Achievement Medal with Combat Distinguishing Device while serving with friendly foreign forces against the

North Vietnamese. Ted was a past Commander and member of the West Islip American Legion Post No. 1738 for over 12 years. He earned an Empire State College Bachelor of Arts Degree in Human Services and graduated Stony Brook University with a Master’s Degree in Social Work. Ted enjoys playing guitar and is a vital part of two Veteran guitar groups. He writes poetry and is a

talented painter working in both water and oil acrylics. West Islip High School’s young scientists made a big impression at this year’s Long Island Science and Engineering Fair, held at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. In the opening round of the LISEF Fair on February 3rd, Hannah Kim’s research project, “Annihilating a Fusarium Blight with Amphotericin B as an Alternative to ‘Slash and Burn,’” received a Grand Award Third Place in earth and environmental sciences. Her work was also honored with the Ricoh Sustainable Development Award and the Aileen and Irwin Wissner Environmental Conservation Award; the latter included a monetary award and a gift of a 350-million-year-old fossil. Kim was chosen as a semifinalist in the category

of environmental and earth sciences, and after approval from the LISEF Scientific Review Committee, was invited to present her research paper at LISEF’s second round on March 10th. In LISEF’s junior varsity competition, also held on March 10th, three West Islip students earned recognition. Conner Muraglio won first place in the behavioral science category for his project “Comparing 7, 8Dihydroxyflavone Hydrate and an SSRI to Reduce Anxiety in Nudibranch,” Gareth Dwyer earned second place in biology for “Analyzing Stevens’ Hypothesis: Melatonin Functionality in Procambarus clarkia” and Ryan Schaake won second place in chemistry for “The Presence of Mercury

within High Fructose Corn Syrup.” Three West Islip research students also attended the New York State Science and Engineering Fair, held on March 21st at the New York Hall of Science in Queens. Kim won a Grand Award Second Place in earth and environmental sciences, while Neslihan Kasap won a Grand Award Third Place in microbiology. For her NYSSEF project, Kim was also awarded an all-expenses-paid trip to attend the International Sustainable World Energy Engineering Environment Project competition in Houston, Texas from April 26th through May 1st, the first time one of West Islip’s students has been invited to attend this prestigious international fair.
