uffolk County Legislator Tom Barraga recently had the pleasure of congratulating Esther Cohen on her 97th birthday. Esther was born in Hoboken on April 6th, 1917. She survives her husband Abraham of 72 years; has two sons, three grandsons and three great grandchildren. The secret to Esther’s longevity is keeping active by attending the West Islip Senior Center and working out at Bally’s Total Fitness.

On Saturday, March 8th, seven student musicians from St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School participated in the SCMEA Division III All-County Festival held at Southampton High School. This concert, which features a chorus, orchestra and band, is comprised of some of the finest young musicians in Suffolk County. Students were selected based on their high scores at the NYSSMA solo adjudication festival last May. In these ensembles, students participate in three fast paced, intense rehearsals with prominent conductors in the choral and instrumental fields. Musings By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There are moments that stand out in your mind as if they happened yesterday, so crystal clear do they remain years later. Walking around C.W. Post’s campus several weeks ago, I was reminded of the many afternoons spent sitting out on the lawn with my Philosophy class, reading Leaves Of Grass by Walt Whitman. The lush foliage, the warmth of the sun, the cool spring breeze, the words of Long Island’s very own Whitman… those are images that never fade. There were the countless afternoons spent walking the “Chipmunk Trail,”

through the Arboretum, savoring the peace and tranquility between classes, hoping to spy some sort of wildlife frolicking between the academic buildings – perhaps a black squirrel rooting through someone’s discarded lunch bag, a sight that was spied on numerous occasions. Then there were the many days relaxing in the Honors Lounge, reading, snacking, socializing and, most importantly, forging friendships that are still going strong, ten years later. Oh, and the classes, of course. Can’t forget those. All kidding aside, there were many classes over the course of my four years at Post

that left an indelible mark. I credit my photography class for introducing me to a whole new outlet for artistic expression, back in the days when digital cameras were still fairly new and handdeveloping our own black and white prints in the darkroom had yet to become obsolete. Years later, I treasure that portfolio of work. What better scenery to photograph than the vast expanse of the north shore, what better setting to begin to explore adulthood, and Whitman… and what better place to revisit, all these years later, to see if the memories remain as vibrant today. That they do.

Tickets are now on sale for the fourth annual Taste of Tuckahoe fundraiser, benefiting the Tuckahoe School. The event will be held on Friday, April 25th from 7 to 10 p.m. at 230 Elm, with restaurants, bakeries, breweries, and wineries from the East End coming together under one roof to highlight their culinary talents and signature drinks for the community to enjoy. The Bay Shore High School World Languages Department celebrated Multicultural Week from March 24th through 28th. The celebration included a student poster contest and the recitation of the morning pledge in different languages. The festivities came to an end on Friday with a grandiose show in the Little Theatre, where language students showed off their ingenuity and many talents in celebrating the

multicultural background of the Bay Shore community. Performances included songs in French and Spanish, musical arrangements, traditional and contemporary dance, spoken word, comedy and even a French fashion show. Celebration Of Women’s History On Wednesday, April 2nd, Assemblyman Phil Ramos hosted his 3rd Annual Celebration of National Women’s History Month. Members of the Bay Shore, Brentwood and Central Islip communities came together at the YMCA Boulton Center to share in the struggles and accomplishments of ROADWAY CLEANUP - Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron recently pitched- the women in our lives. in with Keep Islip Clean (KIC) volunteers to help clean two stretches of roadway. The Bay Shore High School volunteers devoted their time to cleaning and beautifying portions of Spur Drive South students Victoria Halpin and Commack Road. This year KIC is celebrating its 25th anniversary.
