Keep Islip Clean’s greeting card recycling drive ended on a high note, with thousands of cards collected for three charitable organizations. The project began as a way to support St. Jude’s Ranch for Children, where cards are refashioned and sold to support their programs. The Ranch cannot accept several

brands so those were set aside for children’s recycled art projects at Long Island Women’s Empowerment Network, a shelter in Brentwood. Hundreds of brand new cards were also donated to the drive and KIC has partnered with the American Legion Rusy Bohm Post 411 to begin a letter writing campaign

for deployed units based out of Fort Totten as well as veterans at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington. “I’m grateful to all who took the time to collect and sort cards,” said KIC Executive Director Nancy Cochran. “Many children and veterans will benefit from what truly was a fun project.”

Library Budget Vote as a valuable resource for the community. It proposes a modest increase in the budget which provides the necessary funding to do what the West Islip community has come to expect from the library. Additional funding has been provided for electronic materials, particularly e-Books, and children’s programs and activities, as well as for health insurance, staff salaries, and building maintenance. This budget will continue to enhance the ability of the library to serve as a place at which all members of the community can connect each other and the wider world of information. It is estimated that the proposed library budget would cost the average district homeowner an additional $8.34 a year in library tax, or, put another way, an additional 69 cents per month. “The Library Board realizes that every cent is of concern to the taxpayer” said Library Director Andrew Hamm,

“but it is their hope that community members will balance that concern with an appreciation of the value they receive for themselves and their families from a vibrant and robust library”. Also on the ballot on April 14th is one fiveyear position for Library Trustee. Incumbent Library Board President James Christophersen is running unopposed for reelection. All residents are encouraged to vote on Tuesday, April 14th. A Public Information Meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday, April 7th at 7:30 p.m. to go over the proposed budget and answer any questions. The West Islip Public Library Board of Trustees has proposed an operating budget of $3,758,543 for 2015-2016 which will be voted on by residents on Tuesday, April 14th, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Library. Approval of the budget would result in a tax appropriation of $4,161,543 which represents an increase of 2%. The appropriation also includes the annual debt service on the Library Improvement Bond. The total amount of the tax levy is within the Tax Cap calculated for the West Islip Public Library using the formula developed by the Office of the State Comptroller. The Budget/ Annual Report issue of the library newsletter, The Source, will be mailed at the end of March to the community with details concerning the budget and the April 14th vote. Parkinson Awareness The American Parkinson Disease Association, Inc. (APDA) is hard at work in Suffolk County helping to “Ease the Burden and Find the Cure.” Founded more than 53 years ago, the APDA continues to help those affected by this disease. The American Parkinson Disease Association Information & Referral Center of Suffolk County offers support groups, educational events, literature and referrals to those afflicted with Parkinson Disease. “Parkinson Disease can be devastating to those who are afflicted and their families” says Julie Garofalo, R.N., Coordinator for the APDA Information & Referral

Center located at St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown. “There has been extensive research within the past 10 years, leading to more medications and surgical treatments to help reduce the symptoms of Parkinson disease, but, there is still no cure. More research is needed,” she said. Parkinson Disease is a progressive disorder of the brain caused by a lack of dopamine, with symptoms that can include a decrease in spontaneous movement, difficulty walking, postural instability, ridgidity and tremors . While the disease typically affects men and women over 60 years old , it is increasingly affecting people in their 20’s through 50’s. There are

approximately 1.5 million Americans who are living with Parkinson Disease. April 11th marks the birthday of Dr. James Parkinson, who first recognized the disease now named for him.
