The Easter feast does not call for sentimentality; it is known for fun in legend and in reality. In Christian faith, it blesses the resurrection; old customs show bunnies in Easter egg action. Some countries favor a Cuckoo or Fox to spread joy; kids do love this suspension be it girl or boy. Eggs represents the symbol of fertility and new life. Hares and rabbits show to multiply a real strong drive. To assist in the festivities, the Easter bunny was born, kept busy with hiding fancy eggs in pastures of corn.

Two students at West Islip’s Beach Street Middle School were recognized by the school’s PTA for participating in the annual PTA Reflections arts contest. Olivia Hargraves (in the visual arts category) and Karina Vartanian
(in dance choreography) each received the Award of Excellence for their entries on this year’s Reflections theme, “Let Your Imagination Fly.” Vartanian also won the Award of Excellence at the county level and will be
honored at the Suffolk PTA awards ceremony in April. “We are very proud of these two students for the effort they put into this contest,” said Principal Andrew O’Farrell.

Positively Purple Students and staff at West Islip’s Bayview Elementary School donned purple on February 12th in recognition of P.S. I Love You Day, which stands against bullying and helps to end depression and suicide. The annual districtwide event, coordinated by the
West Islip High School Student Senate and LionHeart, was created in 2010 by West Islip graduate Brooke DiPalma following a family tragedy. In addition to wearing specially designed purple shirts, Bayview students crafted classroom quilts with positive messages
for their schoolmates, created special artwork and hung flags outside their classrooms. “It was a special day that reminded us that we are each special and loved,” said Principal John Mullins.

West Islip Public Library
The West Islip Public Library Board of Trustees has proposed an operating budget of $3,774,621 for 2016-2017 which will be voted on by residents on Tuesday, April 5th, from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Library. Approval of the budget would result in a tax appropriation of $4,182,496 which represents an increase of 0.5%. The appropriation also includes the annual debt service on the Library Improvement Bond. The total amount of the tax levy is within the Tax Cap calculated for the West Islip Public Library using the formula developed by the Office of the State Comptroller. The Budget/ Annual Report issue of the library newsletter, The Source, will be mailed in the later part of March to the community with details concerning the budget and the April 5th vote. The proposed library budget recognizes both challenges faced by local taxpayers and
the importance of maintaining the library as a valuable resource for the community. It proposes a relatively small increase in the budget which provides the necessary funding to do what the West Islip community has come to expect from the library. Additional funding has been provided for electronic materials, particularly e-Books, and children’s programs and activities, as well as for health insurance and staff costs, while reducing funding for Retirement System contributions. This budget will continue to enhance the ability of the library to serve as a place at which all members of the community can engage in life-long learning and connect with each other and the wider world. It is estimated that the proposed library budget would cost the average district homeowner an additional $2.25 a year in library tax, or, put another way, an additional 19 cents
per month. “The Library Board realizes that every cent is of concern to the taxpayer,” said Library Director Andrew Hamm, “but it is their hope that community members will balance that concern with an appreciation of the value they receive for themselves and their families from a vibrant and robust library.” Also on the ballot on April 5th is one fiveyear position for Library Trustee. Incumbent Library Board Vice President Margaret Bell is running unopposed for reelection. All residents are encouraged to vote on Tuesday, April 5th. To kick off the annual Shamrocks for Dystrophy program at West Islip’s Udall Road Middle School, students in Deborah Pulitano and Kathleen Ryan’s integrated social studies class were paid a special visit by identical twins Corey and Eric Ryan, who both have muscular dystrophy. During their talk on March 4th, the Ryans discussed the Shamrocks program, and the students had an opportunity to ask questions about muscular
dystrophy and what it is like to live with this disease, as well as learn firsthand about the use of power wheelchairs. For the past 22 years, Udall Road has participated in this worthwhile program to benefit people in Suffolk County who have been diagnosed with muscular dystrophy. Students and teachers purchase green shamrocks for $1 and gold shamrocks for $5; the purchasers’ names are written on the shamrocks, which are then hung on
each classroom door. “It really gets everyone in the spirit for St. Patrick’s Day,” said Principal Daniel Marquardt. “All proceeds raised go directly to support those living with muscular dystrophy to purchase items such as wheelchairs and braces, and for cure research as well. Udall has also been able to send several children to camp each summer because of the generous donations made in the past.”
