There are only so many laps a Betta can swim around his plant, only so much gravel to push from one corner to another. Ah, but enough complaining. I’ve decided to turn over a new fin for my new year and focus on being positive and loving toward my Human, my Grammy and any other visitors who might like to visit and gaze upon my beauty. (Hey, I didn’t say I was going to take up modesty.) ‘Til next time, thanks to all the readers for their birthday greetings. It’s here! It’s finally arrived! The moment you all (well I and my Human) have been waiting for! My very first birthday in my bowl, celebrated this past weekend with my Human family. Who would’ve thought this day would come… Of course, in Betta years, that probably makes me about 47. Not to mention the countless days… months… years… I spent languishing in that tiny Tupperware container they kept me in at the pet store. But, ever since February 16th, 2015, the day my Human adopted me, all has been well. There was a party, with dinner, and even a few presents! What does one buy a Betta, you ask? Well, there was the pre-Birthday/Christmas gift of a brand new tank – complete
with a filter and a light and everything – which my Human has yet to transfer me into… something about not wanting to “traumatize” me without consulting with the “pet experts” at the store first. I haven’t received a scheduled moving date as of yet. Speaking of, I’m still patiently waiting to be taken on that shopping spree I was promised back in August for my six-month birthday. All the sales that have come and gone… just think what fancy toys and plants I could have accumulated by now! I must have at least enough for a small castle saved away. And pretty gravel… and maybe a leafy hammock to sleep in… and a seashell to decorate… Tiny brain, big dreams. The one thing I didn’t get was a fishy friend to play with. I don’t need anything fancy like me; perhaps just a small

Participating in the annual Science Olympiad Eastern Long Island Regional competition, West Islip High School team members Randy Paquette and Dan Rosenson earned a third-place medal for their work in building and programming an electric vehicle. In the January 30th event, held at Brentwood High School, 47 teams from 24 Suffolk County
high schools competed for the chance to advance to the state competition on March 13th-14th at Le Moyne College in Syracuse. Other notable results for West Islip included a medal for Nesli Kasap and Sara Mercurio for placing ninth in the anatomy and physiology event, and an impressive finish for bridge-building freshmen Derek Kim and Jack Walsh, whose construction

LENTEN LESSONS - As the start of the Lenten season is upon us, second graders at Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park have been preparing their hearts and minds for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Second grade teacher, Ms. Bravo has been reading and discussing Bible stories and parables regarding the lesson of forgiveness. One that stood out at them was the story of Jesus and Zacchaeus, the Tax Collector. Students harnessed their artistic skills and re-created the scene, with Jesus calling Zacchaeus down from the Sycamore tree, reminding them all that we, too, can ask for forgiveness.

by and in a world in which it is so infrequently covered and so often overlooked, it is key for these tweens to be bringing such messages home to their daily lives and openly discussing the beauty and importance of simple acts of kindness.
Embracing Differences In a project initiated by the school’s Helping Hands Club, students at West Islip’s Beach Street Middle School worked together to construct the “I Am” Wall. The wall serves as a visual representation of how individual differences,
like individual bricks in a wall, can make students stronger together. “The ‘I Am’ Wall is meant to illustrate how our school is a place where differences are embraced, individuality is encouraged and negative judgments are
eliminated,” said Principal Andrew O’Farrell. “It will continue to grow as more and more students add personal ‘bricks’ to the wall, representing how each student is unique yet still an integral part of a school community.”

Compassionate Character Compassion was the watchword for December at two West Islip schools, both focusing on character education. Sixth-graders from Udall Road Middle School visited Manetuck Elementary School’s first-grade classrooms in December to read books about compassion, including “Wonder,” which focuses on the importance of demonstrating compassion
and acceptance of others. The Udall visitors then spoke with the younger students about the books they had read and the importance of demonstrating empathy. Manetuck also held a Character Education Awards assembly, reflecting the choice of compassion as the school’s character trait for the month of December. One student from each class was
recognized for standing out among their classmates for demonstrating compassion to others throughout the month. Each of the 28 recipients, ranging from kindergarten through fifthgrade, received a character education award, pawprint pin and character education sticker, and their names were displayed on the “Path to Paw-Fect Character” in the main hallway.

Dedicated Dozen A dozen dedicated West Islip musicians were honored with selection for participation in this year’s Long Island String Festival Association concerts, an honor reserved for the finest string orchestra students in Suffolk County. The LISFA recognition was based on recommendations from their orchestra teachers and scoring results from last year’s New York State School Music Association Solo Festival. For LISFA’s Suffolk Secondary concert, held January 31st at Ward Melville High School in
East Setauket, the West Islip participants included six from West Islip High School – seniors Alexa Abbatiello, Lindsey Gellar and Alexander Moy; junior Ryan O’Shea; and freshmen Madison Esposito and Roman Millet – as well as two eighth-graders, Patrick Gaffney from Beach Street Middle School and David Belcher from Udall Road Middle School. LISFA’s Suffolk Elementary concert, held January 17th at Smithtown West High School, featured four West Islip musicians: Beach Street seventh-grader Kyle
Tran, Udall Road seventhgrader Amanda Ditaranto, Manetuck Elementary School fifth-grader Tina Mattel and Oquenock Elementary School fifthgrader Madison Williams. Additionally, in a separate event sponsored by LISFA, a quartet of West Islip senior musicians – Abbatiello, Emily Berardicelli, Gareth Dwyer and Rebecca Wolff – performed Abbatiello’s original composition “Vision” at the LISFA Chamber Music Festival, held on January 10th at the Staller Center at Stony Brook University.
