A first-place trophy was awarded to Natalie Cosentino in Principles of Marketing and a secondplace trophy went to Ryan Schaake in Business Service Marketing. Additional trophy winners included Marissa Gustavson and Megan Kerrigan in Principles of Hospitality and Tourism; Qi Di Zheng in Principles of Marketing; Joseph Rivera in Business Finance; Melissa Winberry in Food Marketing; Kate Kohler in Human Resource Management;

Vincent Alagna in Marketing Management; and Rachel Wandzilak in Job Interview. Team trophy winners for West Islip were Madison Barany and Kelly Ryan in Buying and Merchandising Team; Matt Di Stefano and Christina Leonard in Financial Services Team; and Krista Ciccarelli and Briana Ferguson, also in Financial Services Team. Earning several trophies, 38 students from the West Islip High School Marketing Club participated in DECA’s Suffolk County Regional Competition held on January 6th at Suffolk County Community College in Selden. Lantern Launch In conjunction with the PARP program theme of “Take Off with Books,” students at West Islip’s Paul J. Bellew Elementary held a PTA-sponsored lantern launch on January 11th on the adjacent high school turf field. Sky lanterns, also known as Chinese lanterns, have been in use for thousands of years to celebrate various festivals, and were believed to bring good luck and carry away challenges and

sorrows. Today, they’re a mainstay of many different cultures, and are released at the beginning of a new year, weddings, birthday parties, outdoor barbecues or any celebration. “The lantern launch symbolized the endless possibilities that open up to us when we read, explore and think beyond the here and now,” said Principal Rhonda Pratt. “My hope is that this shared experience with our entire

school community will motivate students to read everyday and renew their commitment to learning in the New Year.” Each class lantern contained an attached tag indicating the lantern’s origin and including the school librarian’s e-mail address, in the hope that the lantern’s finder in a “far-away land” will contact the school. “We are looking forward to hearing back

Seventh-graders at West Islip’s Beach Street Middle School visited the U.S. District Court in Central Islip on January 13th and 15th to participate in “The Bench in Your Backyard” civic education program. During this social studies field trip, coordinated by social studies teacher Tara Probert with court liaison

Dina Miller, the Beach Street students interacted with federal court judges, federal prosecutors, a public defender and U.S. marshals. Students discussed all aspects of the judicial system and brought many elements of the Constitution to life in authentic ways. “Everyone on the trip

was extremely impressed with the enthusiasm of all of the presenters in the program,” said Principal Andrew O’Farrell. “Engaging in discussions about the Constitution and our judicial system with federal judges and attorneys was certainly a great learning opportunity for our students.”

An Ode to Driving on LI By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’m willing to go out on a limb to say that even those who would count winter as their favorite season do not enjoy driving in the snow and icy conditions it brings, especially if they live on Long Island. Just the other morning, after a surprise helping of the white stuff, I was reminded of the joys of a morning commute in about six inches of slush… The privilege of driving behind those with an aversion to cleaning off their rooftops and back windows… The honor of inching behind drivers who seem to think that to surpass 20 mph would be criminal… The thrill of testing out my brakes every car length or so, as people ahead come to a screeching halt due to…what, exactly? I couldn’t tell you.

Sure, I understand the anxiety which can come from being forced to travel in such conditions – to a degree. But when a few select drivers and their inability to, you know, drive are the cause? Well, that’s where I lose patience. I’m pretty sure they teach this stuff in driver’s ed, in defensive driving courses – or in the big old handbook known as common sense. It’s not rocket science people. #1. You need to see the road, so clean windows and mirrors are a must. #2. The rest of us need to see the road as well, so having an 18-inch clump of snow fly off the back of someone’s car into your windshield… not the most conducive to aforementioned point. #3. Brakes do not respond well on wet pavement, snow or ice – so it is best to

refrain from slamming on them for no good reason. Simply letting up on the gas pedal and, oh yes, steering can work wonders. These are just a few of the more important points I encountered on my journey to work, on a 20-mile straight stretch of road with no fewer than a dozen or so drivers wreaking havoc. We’ve been fortunate this winter, but that’s not to say we have been – or will be – spared completely. A few more morning or evening rush hours like that, and we’ll all be counting down the days to spring. Stay tuned next week as Buddy the Betta celebrates his much-anticipated 1st Birthday in the bowl and offers his take on this thing called “Valentine’s” Day.

Hunter Seda), five from Udall Road Middle School (seventh-grader James Gadaleta; and sixth-graders Drake Castonguay, Kevin Kohlhoff, Anthony Larick and Kristina Veiga), and one each from Bayview Elementary School (fifthgrader Nicholas Nuzzi) and Oquenock Elementary School (fifth-grader Andrew Rao). This year’s Day of Horn featured the world’s largest horn ensemble,

and an application was submitted to the Guinness Book of World Records. Approximately 270 horn students from Suffolk County attended the event, which featured numerous clinics, rehearsals and concerts throughout the afternoon. Guest artists included musicians from the Metropolitan Opera, professors from the Juilliard School and current Broadway show musicians.

The Suffolk Educational program for Retention in the Volunteer Emergency Services (“SERVES”) program provides tuition reimbursement to studentvolunteers for their service in Suffolk County volunteer fire departments and EMS agencies. The program was created as an incentive to recruit and retain members. In exchange, student-volunteers are eligible to obtain tuition reimbursement based

upon grade point average (“GPA”) and fulfillment of established service requirements in a County volunteer fire department, volunteer fire company or volunteer EMS Agency. “There is currently a critical need for new members at local fire departments and at volunteer Emergency Medical Services Agencies. I can’t think of a more meaningful and selfless way to advance one’s own education while at the same time, providing a critical service to their community,” said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter. The program provides tuition reimbursement

to student-volunteers for their service in Suffolk County for up to 120 credit hours attained at a New York State Education Department approved college or university within Suffolk County.
