ongratulations to West Islip sophomore diver Patrick Carter for recently breaking three School and County diving records. On January 16th, Patrick broke the West Islip High School ‘6 dive’ record and broke the Suffolk County record with a score of 352.42. At his next competition, he broke James Korten’s 1971 Suffolk County ‘11 dive’ record with a score of 574.35. Patrick is a two-time defending County champ.

State University of New York Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher met with Stony Brook University students January 15th to discuss initiatives that would help maximize the SUNY experience and that would further define students’ expectations. The dialogue gave students a platform to share their feedback with leading voices in higher education, including the New York State Senate’s Higher
Education Committee Chairman, Senator Kenneth P. Lavalle, Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD, and Trustee Cary Staller. The intimate audience of about 40 student leaders shared reasons why they chose Stony Brook, which included affordability, value, diversity, tier one research opportunities and reputation. Additionally, the students offered suggestions of ways
that SUNY could help others reach their higher education goals. Topics included the continuation of SUNY’s study-abroad programs, further definition of finish-in-four initiatives, expansion of online education programs, spoton admission opportunities and continued financial support from New York State for research, student life organizations and student employment.

Applications are now being accepted through April 15th for the United States Naval Academy Summer STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Program. The Summer STEM Program is held in three sessions: June 1st-6th for rising 8th-9th graders; June 8th-13th for rising 10th graders; and June 15th-19th for rising 11th graders. The Summer STEM Program is an overnight academic program designed for rising students in good academic standing who have a keen interest in math and science. Summer STEM 2015 will have the theme “Land, Air And Sea: Exploring Navy Technology On All Fronts.” The STEM Program gives students the opportunity to experience real-life applications of math and science principles through hands-on practical
learning. Students will learn from distinguished Naval Academy professors in world-class lab facilities that provide a unique learning environment outside the traditional classroom. The academy’s current students, called midshipmen, help run the Summer STEM Program and act as mentors to students. Summer STEM accepts 640 students for their three sessions from roughly 6,300 applications each year. All students selected to participate pay $425 for this academic summer program and are responsible for providing their own transportation to and from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. Founded in 1845, the U.S. Naval Academy today is a prestigious four-year service academy that prepares midshipmen
morally, mentally and physically to be professional officers in the naval service. More than 4,400 men and women representing every state in the U.S. and several foreign countries make up the student body, known as the Brigade of Midshipmen. Midshipmen learn from military and civilian instructors and participate in intercollegiate varsity sports and extracurricular activities. They also study subjects like small arms, drill, seamanship and navigation, tactics, naval engineering and weapons, leadership, ethics and military law. Upon graduation, midshipmen earn a tax-payer funded Bachelor of Science degree in a choice of 25 different subject majors and go on to serve at least five years of exciting and rewarding service as commissioned officers in the U.S. Navy or U.S. Marine Corps.

What’s The Plan? By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I am a person who thrives on plans, on knowing precisely what the schedule entails, time frames, routes, weather forecasts, the whole bit. So when these plans, inevitably, fall apart at the seams, it’s more than a bit frustrating. I mention this point because, in the span of the last 24 hours, I have had about seven potential “happenings” fall through, some even before they had the opportunity to be properly formulated. I know, I know, get over it, be
spontaneous, blah blah… well, for some, this is easier said than done. Especially when the roadblocks are created through no fault of your own. From dinners with friends, to summer concert presales, to advance ticket reservations to outdoor adventures… all cancelled, on account of everything from Mother Nature, to high demand, to illness, to, well, just plain hesitancy to commit to anything so far in advance. Such a turn of events can go one of two ways – it can motivate you to forge ahead, solo, or (especially in the cold of winter)
to instead curl up and resolve to hibernate until Spring. Normally, this second option would be just fine with me; but after repeated, futile attempts to coordinate in such a short span of time… well, it’s just disappointing. A joke. A candid camera-type collection of mishaps. They say you should make the most of each day, but sometimes, it just seems that life is conspiring against this principle. I tried. I failed. I suppose I could give it another try tomorrow. Or not… how many days ‘til Spring?

their winter break with a visit to a Habitat for Humanity site in Breezy Point, a neighborhood in Queens, New York that suffered significant damage due to Superstorm Sandy in 2012. The group was able to rebuild a porch railing for an elderly woman and paint basement walls to renovate a home. The following day, the group continued to work in Breezy Point, where they painted and spackled walls for homes that were damaged in the storm. The third day of work brought the group to the St. John’s Bread & Life Soup Kitchen in Bedford-Stuyvesant, a neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York. There, they joined a team of volunteers to help serve more than 1,000 plates of breakfast and lunch to the hungry. In

With a record 135 teams and over 2,000 students participating this year, School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) has announced that another round has been added to its FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) LEGO League (FLL) Qualifying Tournaments. The threeday tournament will take place on January 24th25th at Central Islip High School, which is located at 85 Wheeler Road in Central Islip and January 31st, 2015 at Mineola High School, located at 10 Armstrong Road in Garden City Park. This year’s challenge is FLL World Class, in which children in elementary and middle school will work on ways to improve the learning experience of others on a topic of their choice using technology. The FLL Tournament is
an international, annual sports-like challenge for children ages nine to 14 to test their creative robotic skills by using science and technology with the help of adult mentors. The competition is similar to the FIRST® Robotics Competition (FRC), where high school students design robots to compete on an intricate playing field. Currently, there are 23,000 teams from 80 countries worldwide that participate in FLL tournaments. “We are pleasantly surprised by the rapid growth of the FLL program,” said Janet Anderson, FLL Director, SBPLI. “This shows that more and more children are becoming interested in science and technology at a very young age.” For more information on SBPLI or the FLL Qualifying Tournament, please visit www.sbpli.org.

Squadron Officers Elected The Great South Bay Power Squadron of the United States Power Squadrons has elected its new officers for 2015 at their annual meeting on January 16th. Suzanne Mora, AP, of Oakdale, has been elected as Squadron Commander. Elected to serve with Commander-elect Mora is Joseph Milano, JN, of West Islip, who will be Executive Officer; Richard Fogel, JN, of Islip as Squadron Educational Officer; Arthur Wallach, AP, of Commack as Administrative Officer; Michael Becker, JN, of
Holbrook as Secretary; Steve Potestio, P, of Holbrook as Treasurer; and Jimmy Milton, AP, of Islip Terrace as Asst. Educational officer. The Change of Watch Meeting, installing these officers, will be on Friday, February 27th, at the RusyBohm American Legion Post, Nassau Avenue, Islip, beginning at 8 p.m. Commander-elect Mora is a Squadron Advanced Pilot, of the United States Power Squadrons and served as the Administrative Officer over the past year. Her previous
Squadron responsibilities include being Secretary of the Squadron. Suzanne has received the following educational advancements and awards in the Squadron: achieved the grade of Advanced Pilot in 2014, Pilot in 2013, Seamanship in 2011, and the ABC Boating Course in 2000. She has also earned Educational Proficiency, Cruise Planning, Inland Boat Operations Certification, Skipper Award, Sail, and Operations Training in 2014. She successfully completed Engine
Maintenance and Marine Electrical Systems in 2013 and Weather in 2012. Suzanne also serves as a member of the Marketing Committee for District 3 of the United States Power Squadron. She has earned three Merit Marks with the United States Power Squadrons, which is based on dedication and work that has been accomplished within the Squadron. The United States Power Squadrons is a non-profit organization of boating enthusiasts who have a common interest and appreciation of recreational
boating, boating safety, and education. As a public service, the Power Squadron offers Safe Boating Courses.
