Aidan Kelly is West Islip’s first Winter Olympian! At the young age of 19, Aidan clinched the third spot out of three on the Men’s Olympic Luge team. He is one of the youngest on the team, his teammate Tucker just beating him out for youngest by mere months. At the age of 14, Aidan tried the sport out on wheels for the first time at Bald Hill. With his smooth moves down the testing track, he was chosen to try it out for a week. He
eventually made it onto the development team and climbed his way up to the best team of all - THE OLYMPIC TEAM. His family is extremely proud of all of his accomplishments throughout the years. He moved away from home, leaving his friends and family behind, in order to pursue his dream of making the team. Until recently, he was shooting to make the next Winter Olympics; lo and behold, he beat that goal

Kicking Into High Gear By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Has anyone else found that the more you have to accomplish in a given period of time, the more efficiently you tend to work? Tasked with a To Do list a mile long, one that would seem insurmountable at first glance, you suddenly kick into another gear entirely, mustering the kind of motivation not seen since the days of cramming for final exams and pulling all-nighters to finish term papers. The problem is complacency. Too easily do we settle into our routines, refusing to waver in our
preconceived notions of how our days should go; how much we are required to accomplish at a minimum, rather than how much we could achieve if only we exercised our full potential. Sad to say, “good enough” is exactly just that for most people – all that they are mentally capable of reaching for. But (and this is good news), see what happens when you take on a little more. Day by day, stretch yourself a bit too thin… and you will surely begin to see just how much time is wasted on a daily basis, and how much more we can accomplish if we only
rise to the occasion. The potential is there; we need only to unlock it. Think back to the days when achievement actually meant something, when everything was a means to an end in order to reach that next level. Why should that mentality change once we “grow up” and settle into adulthood? Why shouldn’t we continue to push the boundaries of excellency, to rise through the ranks and maximize every minute we can in pursuit of perfection? Everyone has a higher gear. There’s no better time than now to tap into the reserve.

Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco recently announced that he has formed a Sheriff’s Office Citizens Advisory Board (SOCAB), which is a first of its kind in Suffolk County. The Board will also be tasked with the establishment of sub-committees with the mission to further promote communication and understanding among various constituent groups and the Sheriff’s Office. They were captivated by the ocean’s rising tide, as the cascade of rolling waves tenderly rearranged all the sand within their reach. Caressed and warmed by the brilliance of the early morning sun, and the magic of the moment, they steal a breath of time to scratch their names in the inviting, ever-shifting sand.

Embracing the tranquility of their surroundings, each couple, moved by the power and timeless majesty of the sea, seems to reach out to one another as their fingers instinctively intertwine, making it difficult to distinguish one hand from the other hand. Silently inhaling the wonders of nature, they slowly continue their journey along the water’s edge, their bare feet tickled by the chill of the surf randomly dancing along the shore.

Returning at sunset, serenaded by the haunting sounds of the sea, only to discover the ocean had once again somewhat magically shifted the sand, washing away most letters and scrambling the rest into one word that expresses so much more. As the water escaped back into the arms of the sea, the message left behind touched them deeply and became a lasting part of their lives, creating a special bond that never ends. Each couple had scratched their names in the sand separately, and the ocean had mysteriously erased some letters and joined others, forever engraving just one word, whispered by a gentle breeze and echoed by the ocean... Open SUNY State University of New York Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher today announced that Stony Brook University will play a leadership role in the system’s introduction of Open SUNY, offering one of the first degree programs to be powered by this signature initiative. Stony Brook’s Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering online degree will now be offered to students with a comprehensive suite of supports and services to aid in degree completion. SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher introduced the new “Open SUNY+” degree programs during her annual State of the University Address today in Albany. “Open SUNY will provide
our students with the nation’s leading online learning experience, drawing on the power of SUNY to expand access, improve completion, and prepare more students for success,” said Chancellor Zimpher. “In addition to these new, fully-online degree programs, Open SUNY will take every online course we offer at every SUNY campus - now upwards of 12,000 course selections conducted by 7,000 faculty - and make them easy to find and accessible for every SUNY student and prospective leaners around the globe.” “We are proud of our collaboration and success in serving a qualified student population that may not otherwise be

Many want to pursue a degree but life commitments such as jobs, children, aging parents, financial limitations, and
community ties limit their access to higher education. Open SUNY aims to reach these non-traditional students as well. “Open SUNY will completely redefine access to a college degree in our state, reaching every child and adult in every school and home in New York,” added Chancellor Zimpher, “and reaching them on their terms - in their homes and communities, and on their time, adapting to their schedules.” Included as part of Open SUNY are built-in supports for students and faculty, such as 24/7 assistance for students, whether they need technical help, tutoring, financial planning, or academic advisement services;
and a Center for Online Teaching Excellence where faculty can opt-in to training programs and online forums to broaden their knowledge about developing effective online courses or share best practices and learn directly from colleagues across SUNY. The eight Open SUNY+ degree programs to debut in January were chosen based on a number of factors, including student interest, accreditation, and their capacity to meet current and future workforce demand throughout New York State. Community Health Partnership On Friday, January 10th, public health leaders and health care providers from the region gathered at the offices of the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council in Hauppauge to witness the launch of an historic community health initiative known as the Long Island Health Collaborative (LIHC). The Long Island Health Collaborative is a bicounty effort to help Long Islanders improve their health. A key component of LIHC’s work is a comprehensive website that connects Long Islanders to the health and social services they need to stay well or get well. Dr. Howard Zucker, the First Deputy Commissioner of Health for the State of New York, “flipped the switch” and officially launched the LIHC and its website at Friday’s event. NSHC is the agency that represents
Long Islands’ hospitals and is the coordinating entity for LIHC. Dr. Zucker noted that this ground-breaking endeavor is exactly what the state health department is calling for in its effort to promote population health and integrated, coordinated health care services throughout New York’s local communities. Health commissioners for both Nassau and Suffolk counties - Dr. Lawrence Eisenstein and Dr. James Tomarken respectively – echoed Dr. Zucker’s comments. They agreed that the prevalence of chronic disease is widespread in both counties and a bi-county initiative like LIHC will help raise awareness and connect Long Islanders to the appropriate care and services. The Long Island Health Collaborative (LIHC) is comprised of all Long
Island’s hospitals, the Nassau and Suffolk County Health Departments, dozens of communitybased organizations, and academic institutions. These partners joined together in early 2013 to combine their expertise in a streamlined and cooperative effort to reach all Long Islanders and help them achieve improved health. The website is a component of their work. The userfriendly site provides Long Islanders with comprehensive health promotion and disease prevention information at their fingertips. It’s a portal connecting Long Islanders to clinical and social service supports that will get them well or keep them well. The LIHC is one of the few collaborative groups in the state of New York featuring a partnership between two neighboring
counties and is the first time that Nassau and Suffolk counties are partnering in such a comprehensive way. Public health and public affairs experts from the region’s hospitals, as well as health department leaders and representatives from social service organizations and public health specialists from colleges, comprise the collaborative. “Health care is a reactive industry . . . we respond to patients’ needs when they are sick and injured,” said Kevin Dahill, president/ CEO of the NSHC. “What is invigorating about this effort is that it is proactive.” The group initially formed in February 2013 in response to enhanced state and federal government regulations that require all health care providers, local health departments, and community-based service organizations to
work together to assure and improve health in communities they serve. It has now moved beyond these mandates and stands as a fully integrated model of health and social service for all of Long Island’s communities. More specifically, the state’s Prevention Agenda 2013 – 2017 mandate asked local county health departments, hospitals, communitybased organizations, schools and other regional partners to join together to address unmet health needs in communities. LIHC performed that task in early 2013 and uncovered unmet needs in the areas of chronic disease prevention and management, especially related to obesity, as well as a great need for more mental health/substance abuse prevention and treatment services. As a result, LIHC’s efforts will
focus on these priorities. LIHC’s ultimate goal is the management of population health, which is really the steadfast coordination and integration of all clinical and social services that assist each and every Long Islander in becoming well and/or staying well. Health care providers - hospitals, doctors, laboratory service providers, nutritionists and social service providers of all types work together to provide coordinated health care. A bi-county walk effort to promote physical activity and that will reveal broad data about health and habits of Long Islanders is also planned, along with health and built-environment policy changes at the local level.

Residents of New York can ring in the New Year with 10 free flowering trees by joining the Arbor Day Foundation any time during January 2014. By becoming a part of the nonprofit Arbor Day Foundation, new members will receive two Sargent crabapple, three American redbuds, two Washington hawthorns and three white flowering dogwoods. “These beautiful trees will give your home in New York lovely flowers with pink, yellow and white colors,” said John Rosenow, founder and chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. “These trees are perfect for large and small spaces, and they will provide food and habitat for songbirds.” The free trees are part of the Foundation’s Trees for America campaign.
The trees will be shipped postpaid at the right time for planting, between February 1st and May 31st, with enclosed planting instructions. The 6- to 12-inch tall trees are guaranteed to grow or they will be replaced free of charge. Members will also receive a subscription to the Foundation’s bimonthly publication, Arbor Day, and The Tree Book, which includes information about tree planting and care.
