Three fourth grade students from Saints Cyril and Methodius Elementary School in Deer Park had the unique opportunity to participate in the 6th Annual PEAK Festival (Parents, Educators, and Kids) in Northport. Now in its 59th year, the Suffolk County Music Educators Association (SCMEA) hosted this year’s PEAK Festival at Northport High School, where hundreds of young musicians, educators and parents gathered to share the musical experience. Students learned new and unique instruments from Ukuleles to Boom Whackers, played their own instruments of choice, and participated in workshops on everything from Musical Theater to Folk Dance. The PEAK festival is about talented fourth grade students learning and experiencing, and performing music.

On The Horizon As we raise a toast to the New Year upon us, let me take a moment to personally thank all of you – the readers – for your continued support throughout the years. As I embark on year number 10 of my tenure here at South Bay’s Neighbor, I am fast approaching another mini-milestone of sorts with this very column. In ten weeks, I will pen (or type, as the case may be) In Step #500. So many topics have been
touched on throughout the years, some inspired by the very fan mail and feedback I have received from all of you. It is with that in mind that I invite you to submit your own suggestions for future columns, en route to the next milestone, whatever it may be. Every writer writes for him or herself; at least, they should. But, without readers, there is little self-satisfaction to be had. So your feedback is welcome. Positive or negative, response equals readership, and
at least a limited degree of engagement. So let’s head into 2015 with the goal of making #500 just the beginning of the next wave of milestones. Student Spotlight GIVING BACK TO OTHERS Over the Christmas holiday, I had a wonderful opportunity to help sick children who were in need. My sisters and I made gift bags and homemade Christmas cards to send to children in Africa. We made two groups of bags, one set for girls, one set for boys. The girls’ bags contained nail polish, toiletry items, coloring books, crayons and stuffed animals. The boys’ bags contained hot wheel cars, toiletry items, coloring books and stuffed animals. The gifts that we made were sent out to Ghana, Africa a couple of weeks ago. The children in Africa got their gifts on Christmas Day. The organization that transported the gift bags and

cards to the children in Africa is called the Foundation of Orthopedics and Complex Spine, known as (FOCOS). FOCOS helps children in Africa who are diagnosed with scoliosis, which is a severe curvature of the spine. I enjoyed this volunteer effort. Another volunteer effort I participated in during the week leading up to Christmas was putting together food baskets for people in need. I volunteer at the Zion Gospel Food Pantry on a monthly bases. Our pantry serves people in need 52 weeks a year. We double our donation efforts during Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. Our food pantry is a designated pick-up
organization for Island Harvest and Long Island Cares. I go to pick up the food twice a week from these organizations. Once again this year, in addition to food, we also gave toys out to those families who are less fortunate. Our church is also a designated distribution organization for Toys-for-Tots. We utilize this resource every year at Christmas to bring joy to children in need throughout our community. Reaching out and giving back throughout the year is always important. However, the Christmas season should always be a time to be even more kind and giving to those less fortunate than us.

Outstanding Volunteer For many years now, the Village of Babylon has annually awarded the Nathaniel Conklin plaque for outstanding long-term volunteer service in the Village. This year, the recipient is local businesswoman and philanthropist Theresa Santmann. Presentation will be at the Nathaniel Conklin House, January 11th, from 3 to 5 p.m. - all are welcome.
Theresa Santmann is often recognized for her generous philanthropy, which supports a wide array of causes as well as targeting research to find the cause and cure for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. In addition, she has received numerous awards for her humanitarian efforts. On a local level, Theresa has contributed to our

community by recognizing the need for and seeing the potential impact of a new science lab at the Babylon High School which she made possible. Ms. Santmann has also been recognized by the business community for her outstanding success as the founder and executive director of Little Flower Nursing and Rehabilitation and Petite Fleur Nursing Home in Suffolk County. As Theresa is honored for her service to the community and beyond, it is also acknowledged that her generosity has made many projects possible and therefore enables volunteerism for the benefit of the wider
community. Theresa served the Babylon Village schools as both a board member and president of the Board of Education. She also served as president of the Babylon Village Chamber of Commerce. In addition, Theresa served as the president of the Babylon Village Youth Project. Through the Pilot Club of Babylon, Theresa serves on the Fund Raising committee which raises money for their signature project - The Start School Right Program - which provides for at least fifty local students to start school with a new backpack, new clothes, and school supplies. These
same students later receive hats and gloves for the winter and a food voucher in February. Though the devastation of Super Storm Sandy left Theresa’s house totally uninhabitable due to the extreme water damage, her thoughts turned to the rest of the community. Working through the Pilot Club of Babylon in conjunction with The Family Service League, over the course of a year, funds in the amount of $320,000 were distributed to Sandy victims in the Babylon area. Her interest in the arts moved Theresa to organize the annual Babylon Art Competition. Working in
conjunction with BACCA, the Babylon schools, Farmingdale College, and Dowling College, Theresa created an art festival held in the Old Town Hall which recognizes and honors the talents of the students in these schools. Theresa currently also serves as vice president of the Executive Board of Directors at Splashes of Hope. In this capacity she participates in the development of the organization’s strategic plan, acts as a business advisor to the Splash team, and participates in the projects and provides support in many cases.
