Developed by Indianapolis-based fleet management expert Synovia Solutions, this cutting-edge app enables parents and caregivers to be notified when their child’s bus is within a specified radius of their bus stop. By letting parents know when a bus is close by, students can meet the bus at their stop at just the right time, lessening the waiting time at a stop and protecting students from inclement weather. This app also allows parents to check the time their child’s bus has arrived at school. Here Comes the Bus is available at no charge to Suffolk Transportation contracted districts as an easy-to-use application that can be downloaded on a Smart Phone or tablet, or accessed on the Here Comes the Bus website at herecomesthebus.com. Port Jefferson is the first school district on Long Island to utilize this app for parents of their K-12 students. Parents are excited to have access to Here Comes the Bus and the safety and convenience it provides. “Here Comes the Bus is the perfect app for today’s parent. On December 11th, Sons of AMVETS Post 48 members gathered at Post 48 to wrap toys that would be donated to the children of Air National Guard Members serving at the Air National Guard Rescue Wing based at Frances Gabreski Airport located in Westhampton Beach. AMVETS Post 48 Sons used fundraising monies to purchase toys for the children. The Sons of AMVETS were assisted by AMVETS Post 48 Ladies Auxiliary Members and AMVETS Members with the wrapping of the toys. This donation was initiated because the AMVETS Post 48 Sons wanted to thank the Air National Guard for the service that they are providing to our country.
The Air National Guard 106 Rescue Wing deploys worldwide to provide combat search and rescue coverage for U.S. and Allied Forces. The 106 Rescue Wing are a World-Class Team of diverse, adaptable personnel recovery focused war fighters. Their mission is to provide Worldwide Personnel Recovery, Combat Search and Rescue Capability, Expeditionary Combat Support and Civil Search and Rescue support to Federal and State Authorities. They also provide Personnel Recovery to the State of New York and deployed operations that they are tasked to support. The Air National Guard’s Federal Mission is to maintain well trained, well
equipped units available for prompt mobilization during war and provide assistance during national emergencies (such as natural disasters and civil disturbances). During peacetime, the combat ready units and support units are assigned to most Air Force Major Commands to carry out missions compatible with training, mobilization readiness, humanitarian and contingency operations such as Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. event. While I was speaking with Pastor Jim Ryan, he mentioned the inspiration behind being mobile. He explained, “Jesus didn’t make others come to Him to be helped, He went to them…that is why we operate in a mobile manner!” Lighthouse Mission’s Youth Outreach operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students and, on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this service for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone. Week after week, many youth on Long Island gather for these events and enjoy a wonderful time together; for many children, the meal they receive at an event will be their only meal of the day. There is an overwhelming amount of people on Long Island who are in need, not only physically, but emotionally as well. Lighthouse Mission is a registered non-profit that truly cares for those they serve. They operate 100% on donations, receiving no government help. If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so! They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are specifically in need of winter coat donations. As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events. All ages are welcome to volunteer! Providing Hope Beyond the Food ... this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island. This organization was founded in 1992 by Sister Elaine when she received a vision from God to “Share the Gospel of Jesus and Feed the Poor.” From there, she humbly took to the streets of Long Island with 10 bologna and cheese sandwiches and did just that. Lighthouse Mission currently reaches 2,000 people per week with the same mission: sharing the Gospel of Jesus and feeding the poor. Pastor Jim Ryan is now the president of this inspiring ministry, and the story of his journey to become so is so inspiring that it left me speechless. After recently meeting with him and touring their quite busy facility, located at 1543 Montauk Highway in Bellport, I was extremely moved. I felt excitement for all they are doing and experienced such a renewed sense of hope. They are truly set apart from many other organizations because they purposefully accomplish much more than just feeding the hungry. Lighthouse Mission operates a Food Outreach as well as a Youth Outreach. Their Food Outreach operates weekly on Mondays (in Coram and Ronkonkoma), Wednesdays (in Central Islip), Thursdays (in Shirley and Port Jefferson Station), Fridays (in Riverhead and Centereach) and Saturdays (in Patchogue and Bellport). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, they chose to go mobile and travel to different locales where those in need can line up and receive plenty of nutritional food, gentlyused clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the

Students Invited to Tour Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) invites all high school students with artistic talent, passion and ambition to an Open House on Saturday, February 3rd from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. LIHSA is now accepting applications for the 2018-2019 school year. Prospective students from across Long Island are invited to meet with LIHSA Principal Dr. Chris Rogutsky Bleecker, along with the school’s expert faculty and staff, then tour the campus at 239 Cold Spring Road in Syosset
and experience classes focused on their specific interests in the visual and performing arts. Attendees can join in theater improvisation, sketch in an art class, take a dance class, listen to a jazz performance and participate in much more to get better acquainted with LIHSA. During the Open House, parents of prospective students will have the opportunity to tour the facility and speak with faculty, guidance counselors, administration and staff. Interested students can also learn
about LIHSA’s Summer Arts Academy for grades 6-12. As part of their professional-level training, students regularly receive one-on-one guidance from experienced professionals working in the industry. Students have recently benefitted from Master Classes and Workshops lead by pop-rock icon Billy Joel; actor and director Ralph Macchio; legendary frontman Eric Bloom, of the classic rock band Blue Oyster Cult; alumnus Michael Trusnovec, lead dancer in the Paul Taylor
Dance Company; renowned sculptor Frank Porcu; and internationally acclaimed violinist Patrick Yim; to name only a few. They also get to perform alongside Broadway stars during the school’s annual fundraiser, Broadway Supports LIHSA. Alumni of the school have gone on to develop successful careers in all arts fields. In addition to landing starring roles on Broadway, alumni have danced with national touring companies, illustrated for New Yorker magazine, designed successful swimsuit lines,
and embarked on technical careers working for companies such as Cirque de Soleil and at landmarks such as Lincoln Center. Graduates have also earned prestigious scholarships and grants to continue their education at some of the nation’s most highly esteemed colleges and conservatories, including the Juilliard School, Boston Conservatory, Cooper Union and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. “We are incredibly proud of the instruction and experiences offered
at the Long Island High School for the Arts,” said Dr. Robert Dillon, District Superintendent of Nassau BOCES. “Each year, we look forward to our annual Open House to showcase the school’s programs, as well as the talent our students possess. Making the Next Move Suffolk County Community College’s Advanced Manufacturing Training Center teaches students the required skills to enter our region’s highskilled manufacturing workforce. Students in Suffolk’s programs learn an array of technologies including computerized machinery, computer software, 3D printers, and ability to design and develop products. A core course, Advanced Machining Processes, encourages students to
experiment to learn the content of the class. The final project is a “Chess Set Project.” Each student designs a chess set by utilizing a CAD/CAM design software package. After completion of the designs the students use computer programs that enable them to manufacture those pieces on the CNC machines, and manufactures his/her own pieces. Suffolk County Community College is committed to the advanced manufacturing sector,”

McKay. “The jobs are there,” he added, “and we are training people to fill them.” Manufacturers across the U.S. are finding it more and more difficult to attract and retain workers with the right skills to fill available jobs and keep up to speed on factory floors. None of the students knew how to design, program, or manufacture any of the metal parts before joining Suffolk’s program.

Resolutions, abstract goals – whatever form your inspiration takes in 2018 – are best served by consistency, by constant reevaluation and modification, if needed. January is just as important a month as any to not lose sight of the bigger picture even if it is a bit clouded by the frosted windowpane at the moment.

up in the mailbox as we speak, as the horrifying realization of just how much we spent the previous month begins to set in. Joyful. But, as with anything, January is something we must contend with, for better or worse. And so, we attempt to make the best of it by cooking up big pots of chili, baking cookies and settling in with our fuzzy slippers and pajamas as we once again pick up that book we’ve been meaning to finish since we started it back on the beach sometime in July. There are the movies we never got around to seeing in theaters that have since found their way to our cable channels, maybe a Netflix series or two to binge watch, even – dare we say it – some long overdue cleaning out of the closets. {But not the dreaded Christmas Closet. Last week’s column was entitled Coming Out of the Cold; this week, Snowed In. Sensing a theme here? January has always been my least favorite month. Apologies to those with birthdays and other assorted milestones which fall within this 31 day period; but, with the exception of New Year’s Day, I find nothing particularly exciting about it. For those who love snow, sure, there’s the potential for a few substantial blizzards to blow our way. But mostly, it’s a month that begins with the daunting process of undecking the halls and ends with faint hopes of a furry critter crawling out of a hole to determine just how much more cold weather we’ve yet to endure until spring beckons. Of course, let’s not forget the seemingly endless parade of holiday bills piling
