Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone recently announced nearly 900 students participated in Suffolk County’s Summer Youth Employment Program, an increase of approximately 100 students from the previous year due to additional funding provided by New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance to divert at-risk youth from gang activity. Birthdays are beginnings. This is a sentiment I have always held particularly close to my heart, if for no other reason than it allows for the momentary illusion of a fresh start, at least for one day. What evolves beyond that point in time is anyone’s guess of course; but the symbolic turning of the page is one that resonates quite deeply for me. This year’s birthday falls within an interval of time that is especially significant, the start of a completely new chapter in my life. After 13 years as editor of South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers and Seasons Magazine, I will be leaving my position to pursue a new adventure at the close of the month, taking my love of writing to the next level and exploring the vast opportunities that await just around the bend. Change is never easy, least of all for someone with my affinity for routine and structure; but, as with all things, sometimes fate takes a hand and points you in a direction you never thought possible. Time, as we know, is one of life’s most precious commodities. As much as we would like to believe there will always be another chance to embark on a particular journey

or pursue a particular dream, the simple fact is that we can never be certain. The time is now, always. I have countless fond memories of my years working here at the old “South Bay” paper that I grew up reading, which I will touch on in more detail as the weeks progress. For now, though, suffice it to say that I am extremely grateful for the chance I was given to show my worth as a fresh-faced college graduate all those years ago. What began as a first step to “get a foot in the door” turned into a huge portion of my career, during which I was able to grow and flourish. My nearly 700 In Step columns stand as the biggest testament to the incredible support I have received from my co-workers, family and friends - and, perhaps most importantly, from those readers who have turned into loyal followers and fans. You have all come along for this journey, week after week, and for that I am forever thankful. Milestones have come and gone, as the columns have accumulated and the memories have been stored away for safekeeping between the lines of type. Along the way, the

particular numbers have gotten miscalculated and misplaced; but now, as I approach the final stretch, I felt an official “count” was in order. To my surprise - and delight, given how I began this particular selection, I will finish my tenure here with precisely 681 columns - my birthdate {8/16} “boxed,” if you will, for those familiar with gambling terminology. A fitting end, if you ask me. And with that, one more column in the books, three remaining - I would like to ask you, readers, for your feedback on what have been some of your favorites through the years, the topics and tales that stood above the rest. Your input has always been appreciated, and has been noted in many of my narratives over time. The stories may have been my own, but the writing was always for you. Automatic eligibility is given to families collecting any sort of Public Assistance including cash grant, food stamps, Medicaid, SSI or HEAP. Out of the 888 youth employed, 772 jobs were created through the summer Temporary Assistance To Needy Family (TANF) program, 76 jobs were created through the Governor’s Office for Gang Prevention, and 40 jobs were created through the Workforce Innovation & Opportunity Act (WIOA). The Suffolk County Department of Labor, Licensing and Consumer Affairs received $1.6 million in funding from New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance to help run the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP). An additional $150,000 in funding was made available to supplement the program as part of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s multi-agency plan to

Panel Discussion Held

The Babylon Industrial Development Agency (IDA) recently held a business financing and assistance panel discussion to help Babylon businesses connect with available financial resources. This event was part of the Babylon IDA’s ongoing efforts to provide its clients and other Town of Babylon-based businesses with opportunities to network as well as realize additional pathways for growth assistance. “The IDA’s role in the Town’s overall economic development is much broader than the transactions we complete,” said Tom Dolan, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Babylon IDA. “Providing access to additional resources for those companies currently or looking to conduct business within our jurisdiction is a key

component of our mission, and events like this serve to make those valuable connections possible.” During the event, representatives from Empire State Development, New York Business Development Corporation, National Grid and PSE&G informed business owners of the various financial assistance and other costsaving programs made available to assist their businesses. The programs discussed ranged from tax incentives programs based on meeting employment benchmarks, special financing and low-interest loans for various industry sectors, workforce development grants and energy efficiency programs packaged with reduced energy costs. “We too often complain about the challenges of doing business here on Long Island, but the state

and other governmental entities have a lot of solutions available for us,” said Matt Berger, Chief Financial Officer of Checkmate Industries. “In order to take advantage of the available programs, you just have to reach out. Soldier Ride a Success

Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilwoman and event organizer Jackie Gordon and the rest of the Town Board welcomed over 1,400 riders to Town Hall for the 2018 Soldier Ride. The event, a 25-mile bicycle ride that begins at Town Hall in Lindenhurst and ends at Overlook Beach, has raised around one million dollars for the Wounded Warrior Project in 11 years. Other notable elected officials were in attendance, including Congressman Peter King, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Suffolk County District Attorney Tim Sini, Suffolk County Sherriff Errol Toulon, several New York State Senators, Assemblypersons and local village officials.

Wounded Warrior Project CEO Michael Linnington was also in attendance and spoke at the morning ceremony. “Councilwoman Gordon and our staff continue to raise the bar for this event every year,” said Supervisor Schaffer. “Participation keeps getting bigger and bigger, which speaks volumes about how great this event is. Thank you to the Wounded Warrior Project for being great partners and the work that they do,” he added. Joe McDonald, a building inspector with the Town, is a Veteran of the United States Marine Corps. He, along with the help of his department, raised over $6,000 for the event before riding with his fellow Warriors. “The amount of money raised by Joe McDonald is

a testament of how much respect the people within the Town of Babylon have for our Veterans,” said Councilwoman Gordon. “In the 11 years since we have had this event, we’ve raised over a million dollars that have gone to helping Veterans who have made enormous sacrifices. As a fellow Veteran, I’m honored to organize this event each year,” she added. Over 50 Wounded Warriors led the pack of bicyclists out of Town Hall after a flyover by a Suffolk County Police Department helicopter. Residents lined the course from Sunrise Highway to the entrance of Overlook Beach, where a barbeque hosted by local emergency response departments and sponsors welcomed the riders.

Spreading Cheer New York Mets star Michael Conforto, a 25-year-old outfielder who was an All-Star last season, recently said that he wanted to lead by example. “If I am going to be a guy who is going to be sticking around,” said Conforto, “I’ve got to step into a little bit more of a leadership role.” While Conforto was talking about his role on the field, he’s been displaying plenty of leadership off the field. Today, “Scooter,” as he’s also known, visited dozens of youngsters at The Cancer Center for Kids (CCFK) at NYU Winthrop Hospital as well as its Children’s Medical

Center. The visit was part of Conforto Cares, a program established by the player to raise awareness about pediatric cancer and the challenges faced by young patients. As part of the program, Conforto had already hosted young NYU Winthrop patients and their families at Citi Field, but Conforto wanted to do more; he wanted to come and see where the youngsters are being treated and spread sunshine and hope in these important places. “My goal is to bring cheer and inspiration to these young children while also raising the visibility of

pediatric cancer and other childhood diseases,” said Conforto. “The Mets have been extremely supportive of my efforts, caring deeply about their communities and helping me to give back. I hope to inspire these young patients to stay determined. If we, as a broader community, stay determined, maybe one day there will be more cures for childhood diseases.” Conforto distributed Mets t-shirts to the pediatric patients and family members. He also handed out pop-up replicas of the Mets home-run apple and presented autographed photos.

The event followed on the heels of patients and family members visiting Citi Field last month at Michael Conforto’s invitation. During that outing, the youngsters were given a tour of the stadium and Mets clubhouse, and they were shown scoreboard operations including how to raise the homerun apple in centerfield. The children also enjoyed batting practice in the Mets batting cages and joined Conforto for lunch in the ballpark. Michael Conforto was so inspired by the spirit of these young

Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is run by Eileen Scanlon, a fellow New Yorker and Licensed Cosmetologist, whose mission is to cultivate a community based on kindness, respect and equality. As a licensed hair professional, Eileen has a following of paying customers, but her real passion lies with helping those who are not able to afford a haircut or hair process. Some of the communities that Eileen serves are: seniors at home, the home confined, hospice, sober houses and those who are differently abled. She always travels to her customers so they can enjoy her services in the comfort of their home or living space, and she incorporates her love of social justice and advocacy into her business practice by using only vegan products. Babylon resident Bryan Irrgang donned his PSEG Long Island T-shirt and joined thousands of runners crossing the finish lineTuesday night at Jones Beach in the Marcum Workplace Challenge. For the third year in a row, PSEG Long Island received awards at the event for “Greatest Participation” and the “Beneficiary Fund Challenge” for donating the most money beyond registration fees. More than 1,000 PSEG Long Island participants attended, raising more than $17,000.

Irrgang ran the 3.5-mile course at Jones Beach in 40:08 minutes, coming in 22nd among his PSEG Long Island teammates. Beneficiaries of the event include the Long lsland Children’s Museum, Children’s Medical Fund of New York, Long Island Cares, Inc. – The Harry Chapin Food Bank, and the Nassau County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals [SPCA]. “This is a great company with dedicated employees who care about our customers and our community,” said Dan
