hroughout the month of December, elementary students in the West Babylon District learned the value of giving back by working together to make the holidays a little brighter for those less fortunate. Students throughout the district took part in the annual Mitten Tree Drive, in which they decorated a tree with mittens, gloves, hats and scarves. The items were then donated to those in the community in need.

Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is hosting a series of six open houses for prospective campers and families of children and young adults with special needs over the next several months. Parents should bring their child if he/she will be a new camper in order to allow them to get a sense of the camp and what they will experience throughout the summer. During the tour, parents will have a chance to meet the staff — the camp’s director, nurse and office manager — and ask questions or address any concerns that they might have. They will have the opportunity to view the entire camp and explore the different areas dedicated for various activities such as arts and crafts, adaptive sports, games, etc. The open houses will be held on the following dates and times: January 20th, from 1 to 5 p.m. February 17th, from 12 to 5 p.m.

Know the signs of a gas leak. We’ve added a spoiled egg smell that makes natural gas easier to identify. Look for bubbles in standing water, a white cloudy mist or blowing dust, which indicates that an underground gas line may have ruptured; or, listen for a hissing, roaring or whistling sound.
As I prepare to host my very first holiday gathering – well, any gathering really – in my new apartment this Christmas Eve, I cannot help but reflect upon the many wonderful memories from past celebrations, most of which took place in the comfort and warmth of Grandma and Grandpa’s house. With the passing of my grandmother earlier this year, there was an immediate sense that this holiday season would be a bit different. So many years – decades, really – spent gathered around the big dining room table each Christmas Eve, of “helping” Grandma bake her famous Christmas cookies (basically watching and waiting and then sneaking a couple as soon as they came out of the
oven), of marveling at the gigantic Christmas tree and the beautiful decorations… of hoping that, one day, I would be lucky enough to have a house as beautiful and as full of love as Grandma and Grandpa’s. Well, my little apartment gathering may be coming together on a bit of a smaller scale, but the sentiment is the same. Any time family and loved ones get together to celebrate, memories are made – and preserved for future generations to appreciate, and add to. My only hope is that they are never lost. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to put together a project back in college for my Family Literacy class which asked us to illustrate one family tradition through words and photographs, providing details
and dialogue, recipes and anecdotes, creating a scrapbook of memories. I chose Christmas Eve and all the traditions that came with it for my family for the first 20 or so years of my life… from our traditional “table photo” taken from the top of the staircase, to my Uncle Al, also since passed, mixing the martinis as we arrived and, later on, after the first three or so courses of dinner, fighting with me for that last fried shrimp. How precious that project is today. By the time you read this, my little celebration will have come and gone, and with it, new memories made. Who knows, maybe one day it will become the stuff of scrapbook legend! Either way, I know I will have at least two angels watching over things to make sure all goes smoothly.

BEST PRICE FUEL OIL A winter tradition continued as the kindergarten students at North Babylon’s William E. DeLuca Jr. Elementary School participated in the annual reading of Chris Van Allsburg’s The Polar Express. “I am your conductor and today I am going to take you on a trip to the North Pole,” said Superintendent of Schools Patricia Godek. Dressed as the conductor from the novel, with Principal Norann McManus dressed as Mrs. Claus, Mrs. Godek read the story aloud as the kindergartners gathered together in their comfiest bathrobes. After the story and a surprise visit from Santa Claus, the students worked with their parents to make gingerbread houses. Using milk cartons as a base, they created their houses using their imagination, plenty of icing and candy. Afterwards, the students returned to class, where they discussed the plot, characters and setting of “The Polar Express” as part of the stories domain they’re currently studying.

Under the tutelage of sixth-grade science teacher Andrew Sheltz, students recently explored the topic of cave diving. Mr. Sheltz, a cave diver since the age
of 13, spoke with the group about what this activity entails, the types of safety equipment needed, the reasons for cave diving and the various places he has visited. To help them visualize the subject, he showed students a few clips from night dives in open water. Using the school’s Google Chromebooks, the students were able to research cave diving locations across the world.

As part of the Common Core module on human rights, fifth-grade students at North Babylon’s Woods Road Elementary School studied the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and read the fictional story Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan. Set in California during the Great Depression, the story tells the riches-to-rags story of Esperanza, who learns the valuable lesson that there
are more important things in life than money. During their study, the fifth-graders sketched and paraphrased the articles of the UDHR and compared them to the story of Esperanza and her family. Taking their lesson on social studies one step further, teachers Denise Casale and Darren Lotter challenged the students to create skits from the novel. Working in small groups,
the students drafted their skits, created scenery and culminated the activity in a special performance for their parents, as well as the kindergarten and firstgrade students. “We read the book and put it into our own words,” said fifth-grader Tamia Tolliver. “We made it easy to understand so the little kids could enjoy the show.”

Recognizing Human Rights

To culminate a Common Core Learning Standards module on human rights, the fifth-graders at North Babylon’s Parliament Place Elementary School recognized the United Nations’ Human Rights Day on December 10th. Leading up to this day, the students studied the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and learned how those rights are demanded in some
countries and violated in others. “The module taught us that everyone has the right to a house, an education and affordable medical care,” said Matthew Kendall, a fifth-grader in Staci Manning’s class. “It’s important everyone has these rights because you need education to learn, a house for shelter and medical care in case you get sick.”
The students also created their own passports, which included the preamble to the UDHR, and made their own T-shirts, which they wore on Dec. 10. The front of each shirt featured the top five rights the individual student deemed most important, while the back of the shirt displayed their reasoning for why they had chosen those rights.
Giving Spirit
Several schools in the West Babylon Union Free School District hosted a toy drive throughout December to benefit the John Theissen Children’s Foundation. In many cases, the collection initiatives were organized by the schools’ student council members, who decorated the posters that hung in the hallways of their respective schools.
The signs advertised the collection and encouraged members of the school community to donate a new, unwrapped toy for the cause. “The children who get these toys are in the hospital and have to deal with the challenges that go with that, so it is nice to try and spread some joy to them at Christmas,” said Jordyn Hickey, the student

council president at Forest Avenue Elementary School. “There is always a wonderful turnout during this annual event,” added Forest Avenue student council adviser Timothy Kahler. “It’s terrific to see the students come together to help those less fortunate.”

Recognizing that the best way to stop bullying is to foster positive interactions and acts of kindness among individuals, Babylon Elementary School adopted the mantra “kindness counts” to encourage and celebrate acts of kindness within the school. As part of the yearlong campaign, students have
taken a kindness pledge, promising to speak and act in caring ways, and received silicone bracelets that read “It’s Cool to Be Kind” and “Kindness Starts with Me.” To reinforce the messages of the program, teachers addressed each of the points noted in the pledge through readalouds and targeted roleplaying scenarios.
Additionally, students and staff members have been recording acts of kindness displayed by others on leaves and placing those on a kindness tree in the main lobby. Students who are caught being kind throughout the year will also receive “It’s Cool to Be Kind” stickers.

Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco today announced the launch of his new weekly radio segment to be broadcast on LI News Radio.
