On the local front, the Kindergarten class worked on designing and sending homemade Christmas cards to local veterans. They will be distributed to our heroes through a wonderful organization called We the People Giving Back. They are a non-profit organization, whose goal is to honor the sacrifice of veterans, their families and those in public service, as well as those who have fallen in the name of freedom and to provide their families with the reassurance of our nation’s endless support and gratitude. Shifting to high tech learning, Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Shirreffs introduced the class to Video Conferencing, where this eager group of early childhood learners had the special treat of a video conference that took them around the world! Santa Claus himself spoke with children from the North Pole and from each of the seven continents, including discussions of the different animals in each of their regions. Heroism Award On Sunday, May 18th, Matthew J. Spadone was on his way home from Tanner Park. He witnessed a motorcycle with two people riding west on Montauk Highway get cut off by a dark-colored sedan. This caused the motorcycle to swerve into oncoming traffic; the passenger was thrown off and her leg was run over by the back tire of the bike. Upon seeing this,

Matthew ran into the roadway where the passenger was laying and screaming in pain. He yelled, “I have to get you out of the street!” Meanwhile, the motorcycle driver had driven up over the sidewalk and fallen off the bike. As cars were zooming by, Matthew pulled and rolled the passenger onto the sidewalk and straightened her body to

help give her some relief. Someone called the Copiague Fire Department, and they took the passenger to Good Samaritan Medical Center. Upon arrival at the hospital, she informed the ambulance driver that a young man passing by, with glasses, a gray sweatshirt and backpack had pulled her to the sidewalk. The driver of the ambulance recalled seeing Matthew at the

scene and recognized him as his neighbor, and contacted him when he got home. Matthew had not mentioned a word of the incident to his parents. This spring, in Boy’s Life “Scouts in Action,” the story of Matthew’s good deed will be printed. As a result of his actions, Matthew was recently honored with the Town of Babylon’s Highest Honor - Heroism Award.

Hour of Code West Babylon Junior High School students participated in the Hour of Code activities throughout the week of December 7th. The activities reinforced concepts taught in other subject areas by integrating math, English language arts, science and technology standards.
