In honor of Veterans Day, Forest Avenue students in the West Babylon School District participated in a variety of activities to recognize and thank the nation’s veterans. During one such activity, fourth-graders used computers to write diamante poems

for veterans, thanking them for preserving the country’s freedoms. A diamante poem is a diamond-shaped poem that uses nouns on the first and last lines, adjectives on the second and fourth lines and gerunds on the third and fifth lines. A gerund is a nonfinite verb form that

functions as a noun and ends in “ing.” School librarian Andrea Francisco then handdelivered the packet of poems filled with heartfelt thanks to the veterans residing at the Stony Brook University Veterans Hospital.

My approach is more along the lines of wander around select stores for hours, aimlessly scanning the departments for inspiration for that “perfect,” thoughtful gift. The funniest part is, it works. At the beginning of the Christmas season, I pretty much compile a list of people I need to buy for, followed by any suggestions or subtle hints that may have been dropped throughout the year. These are generally few and far between.

The rest is left up to that aforementioned “inspiration.” While my system may not be the most efficient in terms of time, it ensures that I don’t miss anything in my survey of stores. I refuse to simply buy something just for the sake of crossing off a gift on the checklist. May as well just re-gift then, no? It’s cheaper. Speaking of price, it seems inevitable – for me, at least – that the second I find exactly what I’m looking for, it shows up somewhere else for less. Considerably less. Like, along the lines of

The kind of deal that you should really take advantage of, while returning your previous so-called “bargain” for a full refund. But, as is the case with most things done during the rush of the holiday season, we buy on impulse, we occasionally pay too much in the process – and we don’t care all that much, because, hey, Christmas comes but once a year, right? Right. Just remember that when the credit card bills come due in January.

No-Shave November Several faculty members at Robert Moses Middle School and North Babylon High School in the North Babylon School District participated in “No-Shave November” to spread awareness about men’s health and raise funds for cancer research. For the month of

November, many staff members at both schools participated in the monthlong trend of growing beards and moustaches to draw attention to the cause. While several faculty members grew their facial hair, many others wore artificial stubble. The high school and middle school

raised $657 for cancer research. “Hopefully, we can continue to get the message out there for all people to be mindful of their healthy and to develop good habits in life,” said Robert Moses Middle School Assistant Principal Jeffrey Raymond.

Babylon High School practical arts and business director Claire Reilly has been selected to participate in the 2014 PwC-KWHS Seminar for High School Educators on Business and Financial Responsibility. The event, which will take place in Philadelphia, PA., seeks to expose participants to an

advanced level of learning on business and financial literacy education as well as provide practical skills to incorporate into the classroom. “One of the areas in which I seek to gain knowledge is in the area of finance,” Reilly explained in her application. “Many of my students go on to

major in a business-related subject in college and I aim to increase the complexity of the material I teach to them while they are in high school. I also seek to gain skills that could help our students [in our new virtual enterprise program] prepare their business plans and improve their case analysis and presentation skills.” Reilly currently teaches the school’s college accounting and college marketing courses. She is also the advisor of the DECA club, which has more than 110 members.

Holiday Outreach Students from Saints Cyril and Methodius Elementary School in Deer Park collected pantry items so important to families in need, especially at this time of year, when everyone wants to be able to celebrate the holidays as best they can, during a time when gratitude is so crucial to finding everyday happiness. SSCM’s fourth and fifth grade students gave of their time and talent, as well as their collected food

items, as they prepared and ran the 8:30 a.m. Mass at SSCM, the Wednesday before Thanksgivinggifting community members with their song, lectoring, and more. The food items contributed throughout the school will go to SSCM’s Parish Outreach Program. Local parishes and their volunteers are the lifeblood of parish social ministry on Long Island. The parks are nice, but there is much more to Disney than the parks. There is horseback riding at Circle D Ranch. Then you have surrey bike riding at Saratoga Springs. You can also do arts and crafts at Saratoga Springs.

There are also horse drawn carriage rides at Port Orleans. Walt Disney also has special cuisine. Their food has real quality. One of the restaurants at Walt Disney world is the California Grill at the contemporary resort. At the California Grill, they serve food from all over the world. My favorite is their sushi. Then there is Bama’s at Animal Kingdom Lodge. At Bama’s, they serve some African meals and some American meals. So go visit Walt Disney World because Disney Vacations + Family = Excitement and Magical Memories

Giving Back Former patient, 4 yearold Bobby Volk, who came through the Pediatric Emergency Department at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital in September and needed emergency surgery, presented a giant check to Dr. Richard Scriven, a pediatric surgeon, today in the lobby of Stony Brook Medicine. Weeks after a successful surgery and very positive experience at Stony Brook Children’s, Bobby was watching a television show and the episode was about a bake sale. He asked his mother if he could have a bake sale. After questioning him, he said he wanted to have one for Dr. Scriven, his team, and all the other children at Stony Brook, stating that “they need stuff.” Bobby and his mom Andrea baked cookies and brownies; Bobby packed up his wagon, and sold the goodies to people at his mother’s job. In the end, Bobby raised almost $300! Bobby, along with his parents, joined Dr. Scriven and members of Stony Brook Medicine to show their gratitude to the hospital and presented a check which will be contributed to the Children’s Hospital and the Child Life Program.
