In recognition of Veterans Day every year, members of the West Babylon Union Free School District come together to demonstrate their appreciation for the brave men and women who have risked their lives to protect American freedoms. Throughout the month of November, students took part in a myriad of activities that paid homage to veterans. Elementary students of Tooker Avenue, Forest Avenue, South Bay and JFK elementary schools wrote letters of thanks to the hardworking troops overseas and the veterans who have served our country. Some letters were sent to a base in Afghanistan, while others were sent to veterans who attend the local American Legion Hall in West Babylon or reside in the Long Island State Veterans Home in Stony Brook. BIG WINTER FUEL BILLS

Senior High School have compiled a book of interviews that they’ve gathered from the veterans in their lives. The compilations created through this project, initiated by Mr. Egbert, are printed every year and distributed to various veteran groups, such as the American Legion, and are shared with presentday soldiers. This year the project included the selling of T-shirts, which students wore to school on November 8th. All proceeds went to the Wounded Warrior Project.

Babylon Memorial Grade School students and families recently came together to celebrate literacy in a fun and interactive way. During the school’s second annual Family Literacy Game Night, attendees had the chance to play a number of fun games while brushing up on some basic literacy

skills. Starting with Scattergories, participants practiced their creativethinking skills as they were given an initial letter and worked to identify and spell the highest number of objects within a set of categories. They then rotated between five classrooms to play

Upwords, Apples to Apples Junior, Hedbanz, Boggle and Jeopardy. These games inspired the groups to use and improve vocabulary, spelling and critical thinking abilities in a funfilled way. At the end of the program, students received a packet of literacy activities and a prize bag.

Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined with Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and Councilman Tom Donnelly to recognize officials from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the New York State Department of Environmental Control (DEC) for their roles in cleaning up our area following Superstorm Sandy. The representatives were given Proclamations from the Town honoring their

work, which was detailed in a brief presentation. The New York State DEC assisted the Town of Babylon in cleaning up over 300 oil spill locations throughout the Town of Babylon that resulted from Sandy. These spills were mainly a result of home heating oil tanks that had broken loose during the storm. The New York State DEC deployed their fleet of trucks to help vacuum up the oil and pump out damaged tanks and basements. The EPA worked

with the Town of Babylon’s Department of Environmental Control on a joint program to recover and pump out oil tanks, drums and containers, as well as other household hazardous wastes, from Superstorm Sandy. Residents were encouraged to place such items at curbside to be picked up by the Town to be disposed of correctly. This highly effective program helped keep thousands of gallons of hazardous material out of our waste stream and waters.

Tis’ the season for outdoing ourselves – in every way… for feasting for what seems like days on end, for running up the credit cards on gifts for all our friends and loved ones – and occasionally ourselves – for “decking the halls” with extravagant garlands and twinkling lights and precious ornaments… There are many who detest this time of year, for precisely these reasons. But I love it.

Tis’ the season to be jolly, right? And why not … we spend enough of our days consumed by outside issues beyond our control. We deserve this brief reprieve from the madness, don’t we? No time like the present to savor the moment and enjoy all of life’s blessings. And, for me, this holiday season will be a year of firsts: First Christmas in my new apartment. First opportunity to decorate and put up my very own tree. First chance to perhaps host a gathering

of my own and – dare I even say it – cook?!? Perhaps not. We wouldn’t want to be too ambitious! But still, the season will be exciting.
