abylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined with members of the Town Board, community members and various local officials for the dedication of “Owen Johnson Way” on Millard Avenue in West Babylon. The street dedication is in recognition of retired State Senator Owen Johnson, who represented the Town of Babylon from 1973 to 2013. Thanks to all those in attendance at this event.

On November 10th, Brendan McCurdy and Bob Draffin, Directors, Friends of Bradstock, presented a check in the amount of $12,000 to Kevin Spellman, Board President, Camp Pa-QuaTuck, at the camp’s board meeting.

VETS DAY BREAKFAST - Last week, in honor of Veterans Day, first graders at Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park lovingly whipped up a delicious French Toast breakfast for SSCM’s own resident Veteran, Father Dennis Suglia. Father Suglia served in the United States Marine Corp for four years before answering his calling to the vocation of priesthood. The students were thrilled to be able to do this for Father Suglia, who frequents SSCM classrooms and is always quick with a parable for the class. Father Suglia seemed quite moved by the youngsters’ gesture and together they prayed for all military personnel and their families.

Can it really be one whole year since we all ventured into the void that is the morning after Thanksgiving to join the throngs searching for that special, magical bargain? Notice I said the morning after Thanksgiving, not the night of, not the day of, and certainly not the weeks leading up to… Black Friday festivities should be reserved for the day itself; that’s what makes it unique. Of course, we now have Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday and a host of other “specialty” days to
observe as well, each with its own nuances – but all come down to the same basic concept: saving money. In all honesty, there has been some argument as to whether these days actually bring the best bargains, with some contending that the last minute rush in the days leading up to Christmas Eve is really the best bet for cost cutting. And then there are those who, as we sit here today, have already shopped, wrapped and shipped all their presents before the turkey hits the table. It would be nice if we could all take a step back and view holiday shopping as the joyous task it was meant to be, rather
than as a chore, a checklist of tasks to be crossed off one by one. Gift giving is meant to be an expression of appreciation for those we love, a token of thoughtfulness… not a source of stress and aggravation. The second it becomes that is the moment you need to pause and reevaluate your approach. So as you enjoy your Thanksgiving dinners gathered around the table with your families and friends, savor the moment. Panthers Prepare Babylon High School seniors Rachel Gregory and Breanna Morrow signed National Letters of Intent this November, symbolizing their commitment to attend and play on the athletic teams at two top colleges this fall. Gregory, a strong defensive player for the Panthers lacrosse team, will be attending Hofstra University as an environmental resources
major. While at BHS, Gregory has been enrolled in advanced placement classes and is an active member of the school’s extracurricular program. She is the sectary of the National Honor Society and a member of the Tri-M, Science and Foreign Language Honor Societies. Gregory also performs in the symphonic wind ensemble and takes part in the student council.
Morrow has committed to join the field hockey team at Mercy College. The aspiring sports management major plays forward and was a captain of this year’s Babylon team. She is also a member of the student council, class cabinet and DECA club.
