CAPS announced today the launch of its SUSS (Students United for Safe Schools) website http:// suss.capsli.org to promote and expand its bullying prevention team building program for middle and high school students. This innovative program was designed and created through the CAPS Bullying Prevention Center and is the first of its kind in the region. SUSS teams are committed to changing school culture and reducing bullying and cyberbullying behaviors in their school communities. In the last three years more than 20 Long Island and Westchester middle and high schools have started a SUSS team. These teams have created public service announcements, posters campaigns, mentoring activities, and participated in national campaigns sponsored by GLSEN and Teaching Tolerance. The

goal of these campaigns is to create school communities where all students feel safe, valued, and respected. We have had SUSS teams appear on News 12 and receive a national Character Education Partnership Award. Funding from the Long Island Community Foundation through its Youth Violence Prevention initiative has enabled CAPS to develop the website, expand the SUSS program, and share and publicize the work that school teams are doing towards creating safe school climates. “Now all Long Island students will be able to benefit from CAPS’ SUSS initiative, fostering positive school climates where all children can feel safe. All L.I. middle and high schools will have the opportunity to create a SUSS team and receive guidance from CAPS,” said

Alane Fagin, Executive Director. “New schools can now sign up online, receive training through the website and access invaluable information on creating safe school communities.”

One strategy that was used was the clock method to locate the food on the plate, in that the potatoes were located at 3 p.m., therefore allowing the person to successfully locate their food. The evening was a huge success with significant positive feedback from those in attendance at this unique event. SILO will be holding this event again next fall and we will be publicizing this event in the future. SILO is the New York State Designated Center for Independent Living Services. It is a non-forprofit Human Services Agency dedicated to working with people

with disabilities, elderly individuals and their families. SILO provides over 27 programs and services throughout the Long Island Region. The ultimate goal is to provide the necessary support for people with disabilities and the elderly to live independently within their communities. Past Peak By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Well there it is. I hope you enjoyed autumn. Did you savor the glorious foliage on your drive to work? Did you pick enough apples and pumpkins to last you through your winter hibernation? Did you take in the requisite corn mazes and haunted houses and eat far too much Halloween candy in the process? Like it or not, once those leaves begin to brown and flutter to the ground en masse, autumn is officially past its peak. Forecasters are already beginning

to utter that dreaded four-letter word as the temperatures drop each evening. Heck, even some retailers seem to have hit fast forward, starting their “Black Friday” sales the day after Halloween this year. Um… did we miss something? As far as I’m concerned, “winter” is still a few weeks out. There’s still plenty of turkey and trimmings to be enjoyed, leaf piles to jump into and mum plants to admire. The shopping and decorating and wrapping and cooking can wait a bit. There will be plenty of time for all that over the next

month or so. And then… well, then it’s just plain old winter. Slow down. Savor. Repeat for next season. It’s not that difficult. Perhaps if everyone wasn’t in such a great rush, there would be more time to accomplish things. Mindset is everything. In the meantime, enjoy the cool, crisp autumn air as you rake your leaves and plan the Thanksgiving menu for next week. Be thankful we have four seasons to enjoy, and be thankful for all those whom you are blessed to share them with.

Seven students from local elementary and middle schools were selected as winners of the contest, which focused on celebrating our veterans. Gift cards to Target of varying increments were awarded to the winners depending on where they placed. Councilwoman Gordon, who is a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army Reserves, hosted the event, which was held at Town Hall in Lindenhurst and served to honor our nation’s servicemembers and recognize the sacrifices that they and

their families have made. Joining local veterans, community members and Town officials in attendance were New York State Senator Phil Boyle, Assemblyman Robert Sweeney and Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey. RUNNER OF THE WEEK - Suffolk County Community College Freshman Leana Wiebelt was named Women’s National Cross Country Runner of the Week by the NJCAA Hill N’ Dale newsletter for her performance at the Community College of Rhode Island Northeast Invitational in Rhode Island on Saturday, November 1st. Babylon Memorial Grade School students and staff members marked this year’s Anti-Bullying Month through a series of activities and an awareness campaign. Students documented their thoughts on what individuals could do to

prevent bullying on slips of paper, which were used to make a large chain to block out bullying in the main hallway and shared over the loudspeaker each day. Campaign coordinator and school guidance counselor Francesca Johnson also spoke about the topic

during lunch periods and encouraged the students to continue to stand up against bullying. Students who were “caught” displaying positive behaviors were recognized with “bully buster” and “recess buddy” certificates.

Fun & Fitness Babylon Memorial Grade School continues to build upon its initiative to bolster healthy recess options for students through the introduction of a new walking club. The program, which is open to all students, runs once a week and features of number of fun activities rooted in walking. Previously, members have

participated in a scavenger hunt and obstacle course, among others. Using pedometers, students track and log the number of steps they take during the activities and are rewarded when they achieve different benchmarks. After a mile walkers names are read over the loud speaker, after five their names are listed

on paper footprints in the cafeteria and after 20,000 steps they receive a charm for their shoelaces. As a kick off to the first meeting, students had the chance to guess how many steps it would take to walk a mile. Those who guessed correctly, or as close to it, were rewarded with a reusable water bottle as a prize.

In honor of Veterans Day, students at Marion G. Vedder Elementary School in the North Babylon School District celebrated local war heroes with patriotic poems and choral performances. Following a raising of the American flag, the trumpeting of Taps by high

schooler Kayla Rivera and a performance of the Star Spangled Banner by high school student Giovanna Guerrero, veterans were serenaded with songs by Vedder’s third-, fourth- and fifth-graders. During the celebration, children also recited poems about the significance of Veterans

Day. “Annually, we take this day to honor and remember our veterans,” Vedder Principal Kerry Larke said. “Our students truly understand who a veteran is, and why they are such an important part of our history and our country today.”
