Post-Sandy Cleanup Initiative The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) has received almost $15 million in Hurricane Sandy recovery appropriations for coastal cleanup and marsh restoration at national wildlife refuges on Long Island. Contracts have been awarded to fund debris
and downed tree removal. The Service will use the majority of the funding - $11 million - to restore marshes at three national wildlife refuges, improving the resiliency of the Long Island coast against future storms. An additional $1 million will be invested in
projects to repair visitor facilities and Service assets damaged during the super storm. “The marshes at Long Island refuges helped to protect inland areas from the full brunt of Hurricane Sandy,” said refuge manager

will begin with aerial and ground damage assessments to develop a project plan. Debris removal should begin in the next few weeks. SavATree, a tree removal company with offices in Brookville and Southampton, NY, will remove downed trees that are causing public safety hazards at several refuges. Tree removal will begin in the next few days. Both companies will take precautions to minimize environmental damages during the project. Service biologists and independent project inspectors will advise crews and monitor progress. For safety considerations, it may be necessary to close national wildlife refuge areas during periods of heavy work. The public will be notified of any closures in advance. The $11 million marsh restoration project will restore and enhance 432 acres of salt marsh at the Wertheim and Seatuck National Wildlife Refuges and the Lido Beach Wildlife Management Area, in the Long Island towns of Shirley, Islip
and Hempstead in Suffolk and Nassau Counties. Restoration and mitigation projects are part of a comprehensive, multiagency Hurricane Sandy Resiliency plan that Department of the Interior Secretary Sally Jewell recently announced in advance of the storm’s one-year anniversary. The refuge has just begun project planning and will update the community as contracts are awarded and work moves forward. Long Island refuges include 6,500 acres of important nesting, wintering and migratory stop-over locations for hundreds of species of birds, and hosts 465,000 visitors annually. The refuges also protect threatened and endangered species, fish and other wildlife, and serve as natural extreme weather buffer zones for many of the island’s populated areas. The restoration efforts will provide important wildlife habitat and enhance the refuges’ value for coastal protection.” The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has awarded contracts to two New York companies to begin cleanup and tree removal efforts at eight national wildlife refuges on Long Island. Coastal Environment Group, Inc. received a $2.5 million contract for the debris removal. The company is a small, minorityowned business based in Edgewood, NY. It has worked with the federal government on major environmental projects including Hurricane Katrina response and remediation at Superfund sites, and has committed to hiring local workers and supporting local businesses. To be a child once again, that carefree spirit, unconcerned by the world outside of our miniature universe – one of Barbie dolls and tea parties and recess and school friends – shielded from the stress of reality for as long as our parents can protect us. Back to that sense of innocence when we assumed that all those “best” friendships from elementary school would never fade… when we never anticipated a day that those relatives we loved so dearly would ever leave us… when all was right with the world – our world – and
we had no need or desire to look beyond the immediate. Some would say this sense of idealism was misplaced and only served to make the subsequent realities that much harsher; in fact, just a quick look at the children of today would suggest a great loss of that innocence I reminisce over now. And which is better? To grow up jaded, or to develop that cynicism over time? Or, better yet, to not let outside forces beyond our control shape our being to the point of losing our sense of self in the process? If only the right answer was always the simplest. So we grow up, and we
grow. And we realize that each day brings with it new obstacles and reality checks that we may have never anticipated. But this is life, as childhood becomes adulthood, and ultimately, this growth is all part of that process. We can’t have it any other way – and we shouldn’t want to. People come into our lives for a reason, this much is true. Sometimes they stay, other times they go; but either way, we are never meant to be the same. Although, there are definitely days when we could all use a little time on the swings at recess with our friends.

Financial Literacy Honors For the third straight year, Babylon High School has been named a Blue Star School by the W!SE Financial Literacy Program and teacher Andrew Marulis has received a Gold Star Teacher award. These awards were issued based on performance results in the school’s Wall Street and personal finance class. Each year, the classes’ students take the W!SE financial literary exam. To earn the Blue Star School status, schools testing 10 or more students must achieve a 75 percent passing rate on this exam and have either a majority of students on a given
grade level take the test or have the students who took it achieve an average score of 80 percent or higher. Teachers with a 90 percent pass rate earn the title of Gold Star Teacher and are honored at W!SE’s annual MoneyPOWER Conference for Financial Literacy. A few hundred schools in New York State participate in the W!SE Financial Literacy program. For the past several years, Babylon has ranked among the top five schools on Long Island. The high school elective has been offered for the past three years and continues to gain
interest from students in grades 10 through 12. Throughout the program, students learn about basic financial concepts, banking, personal finances, insurance, investing and credit card awareness. At the end of the course, students complete a corporate research project on a company of their choice. Based on their performance, students are eligible to receive college credit for the course through SUNY Farmingdale. “This program provides students with practical applications for real-world concepts,” said Mr. Marulis.

Babylon School District’s preschool program for district residents, offered as part of the high school’s college child psychology course, also earns students college credit through Long Island University’s Secondary Collegiate Articulated Learning Experience (SCALE) program. The program, which is located at the high school, offers a unique and active learning environment for both preschoolers and high school students. Students enrolled in child psychology apply the knowledge they acquire during the course as they take on the role of student teachers in a preschool class of 24 children. The students work together to develop creative lesson plans, age-appropriate activities, and construct learning materials. Every
Tuesday and Thursday, they serve as positive role models to the three- and four-year-old children in the program. The students enrolled in child psychology practice critical thinking strategies, demonstrate leadership skills, and communicate effectively all while gaining practical, hands-on experience working with children. “Having the preschool located at the high school provides valuable resources including our own library, access to recreation areas, community connections, and services provided by various student organizations,” said teacher Lisa Brush. “I work with a responsible, compassionate, and dedicated group of high school students. Every day it is evident how much they care about the
children in our program. We collaborate to make every preschool day a success, with the hope that we are instilling in the children a love for school and learning.” In addition to the educational benefits, the program provides high school students with the opportunity to get a head start on their college education by enabling qualified juniors and seniors to earn college credits, which can be transferred to eligible universities. Cremation Practices In The Catholic Church
Since November is our month of remembrance for our beloved dead, I thought it might be helpful to remind you of some of the information concerning the Catholic Church’s teaching and viewpoint on the practice of cremation. As you know, the Church does permit the practice of cremation as long as it is not being done as a direct contradiction to Catholic belief in the resurrection of the body on the last day. “Cremated remains” is the preferred term which gives more dignity to the mortal remains of the Christian, rather than the slang term “cremains.” The cremated remains may even be brought into church and the Funeral Mass may take place in the presence of the cremated remains if for some reason cremation takes place before the Mass is celebrated. However, the Church has some very specific rules concerning the respect and dignity to be accorded to the cremated remains. Article 417 in the Order of Christian Funeral tells us this - please take note of this very carefully: “The cremated remains of a body should be treated with the same respect given to the human body from which they come. This includes the use of a worthy vessel to contain the ashes, the manner in which they are carried, the care and attention to appropriate placement and transport, and the final disposition. The cremated remains should be buried or entombed in a mausoleum or columbarium. The practice of scattering cremated remains on the sea, from the air, or on the ground, or keeping cremated remains in the home of a relative or friend of the deceased are not the reverent disposition that the church requires. Whenever possible, appropriate means for recording with dignity the memory of the deceased should be adopted, such as a plaque or stone which records the name of the deceased.” So, to put it bluntly, one must do with the cremated remains what one would do to the body of the deceased: they must be buried or emtombed. It is not appropriate to scatter the ashes or to keep them at home, nor is it acceptable to divide the cremated remains into different pieces of jewelry for the family. I’m not kidding about that last one- the funeral industry will actually offer this as an option, but that is completely against the Catholic teaching, and we should not participate in such a practice. On October 19th, friends and members of the Shapiro family joined Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck board members at a fundraiser for the camp at Hurricane Grill and Wings in Syosset. The event was created in honor of Jodi Shapiro, a Special Education Administrator for Manhasset Schools, who suddenly passed away after a brief battle with cancer this summer. Approximately 250 people attended the fundraiser. The event raised nearly $14,000, surpassing the fundraising goal of $10,000. During the event, Mark Shapiro, Ms. Shapiro’s brother, spoke to attendees about his sister’s passion for helping special-needs children. He expressed how
important Camp Pa-QuaTuck’s mission was to her and how grateful he was for everyone’s generosity at the event. Throughout the event, guests had the opportunity to enjoy live music, a silent auction, a 5/50 raffle and a hot wing eating contest, with all of the proceeds benefiting Camp Pa-QuaTuck. Ms. Shapiro began working with the Manhasset School District in 2009. She implemented programs for children with special needs at Shelter Rock, Munsey Park, Our Lady of Grace, and St. Mary’s elementary schools. In 2012, Ms. Shapiro was promoted to Assistant Director of Committees on Preschool and Elementary
Special Education. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp serving children and young adults ages 6-21 with both physical and developmental special needs. Its mission is to help these children to achieve equality, dignity, and maximum independence through a safe and quality program of camping, recreation, and education. On October 24th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) held its 30th Anniversary Gala at JEWEL by Tom Schaudel in Melville. The event raised over $50,000 for ADRC. This year’s honorees were Mark Ordan, chief executive officer of Sunrise Senior Living, and Dignity Home Care. Mr. Ordan was recognized for his work and commitment for caring for those with Alzheimer’s Disease.
