Lions Quest Initiative learned about the program. Lions Quest, an evidence-based program, focuses on social and emotional skill building, bullying, substance abuse and dropout prevention, and service learning. The Lions Quest program is designed to create a positive and safe school climate for students and teachers, and unite the home, school and community. Highly effective programs like Lions Quest have been proven to decrease problem behaviors while increasing academic achievement, prosocial behaviors and connectedness to family and school. The program includes a carefully sequenced elementary, middle school and high school curriculum and helpful guidelines for parent meetings, service

learning strategies and a school climate committee. The grant will be used to subsidize the cost of training Long Island teachers and administrators in the implementation of this program, which helps reduce the cost to school districts and taxpayers. The implementation of Lions Quest across Nassau and Suffolk counties is in collaboration with the Lions clubs of both counties, and Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF), the official charitable organization of Lions Clubs International. Western Suffolk BOCES will be providing the one-day professional development workshops to train educators. Districts that participated in training last spring and who have already received grant awards are Commack, Freeport and Merrick Schools. Other districts in the process of submitting grant proposals include Eastport-South Manor, Huntington, Long Beach, West Babylon and Woodward Children’s Center. In collaboration with the Lions Club International Foundation, the Long Island Lions Quest Initiative recently announced the awarding of a Core 4 grant of $133,000 to help Long Island schools train teachers and provide materials for the K-12 Lions Quest program, a proactive initiative to create safe, supportive and successful schools on Long Island. Through this grant, proactive schools in Nassau and Suffolk counties are set to create safer and more supportive schools through Lions Quest, which meets the new Dignity for All Students Act curriculum requirement. Stony Brook University is one of six recipients of a $5 million grant from the Transforming Undergraduate Education in STEM program at the National Science Foundation (NSF) to develop tools that will change the way STEM students are assessed. grant will allow Stony Brook researchers such as Dr. Nehm to expand the development of innovative assessment tools for large undergraduate STEM classes. Also on the research team is Dr. Minsu Ha, Stony Brook’s first science education postdoctoral researcher and an expert in machinelearning methods in educational assessment and assessment design and evaluation. “Drs. Nehm and Ha are exactly the individuals we want to bring to Stony Brook in our quest for international leadership in science education,” stated David Bynum, founder of CESAME. “The NSF grant is one that will propel Stony Brook to the top of the mountain as a powerhouse of STEM education.”

Along with Stony Brook, five other universities were recipients of the grant: Michigan State University, University of Colorado, University of Georgia, Western Michigan University and the University of Maine. The grant builds on an earlier partnership between these institutions to develop automated scoring systems that allow students to practice their written explanations, arguments and communicative skills. “This is the first time that research on such a large scale has been brought into undergraduate science, technology and math education,” said Dr. Nehm, who is PI on two additional NSF projects focusing on science education research.

RESIDENT FALL FESTIVAL - On Monday, October 14th, Good Samaritan Nursing Home hosted a Fall Festival for their residents and family members. All guests had a chance to enjoy the musical entertainment and children’s activities which included face painting and pumpkin painting. Pride for the hometown Panthers was at an alltime high at the end of October when the Babylon School District celebrated Homecoming 2013. The weekend festivities kicked off with the 12th annual “Soccer Under The Lights” event, honoring the life and memory of Randy Zwerlein, a beloved Babylon community member who passed away in 2002. During the event, the Lady Panthers took on the Pierson Whalers and the boys team competed against the Port Jefferson Royals. Mr. Zwerlein is remembered as a dedicated volunteer, so the annual event honors the spirit of volunteerism as well as his commitment to youth sports. Proceeds from the event help support scholarships given in Mr. Zwerlein’s memory, as well as raise funding for

future night games in celebration of education and community spirit. The annual homecoming parade through Babylon Village included the high school marching band; youth, junior varsity and varsity cheerleaders; youth football league; members of the school’s theater arts program; and those students nominated to the homecoming court, who rode atop open convertibles. The floats in the parade were created by each grade at the high school and followed the theme of “game apps.” At halftime, it was announced that the junior class had won the contest with their “Angry Birds” float and that Logan Middleton and Jayne Dittmeier were this year’s king and queen. Prior to kickoff, the second annual chili and chowder cook-off

commenced in the stadium complex. Judges included district administrators, residents and local elected officials, tasting submissions made by eight local restaurants and 11 residents. In the chili category, winners included Jules Larock (resident) and Horace and Sylvia’s (restaurant); chowder winners were the Giovanazzo and Galbreth Families (resident) and Lily Flanagan’s (restaurant). The Babylon Panthers captured an early lead in the varsity football game against Mt. Sinai and continued to outplay their opponents through all four quarters. With a final score of 42-7, the team extended its Long Island-leading and school-record winning streak to capture its 18th victory in a row.

Students at West Babylon High School had the unique opportunity to experience the dangers of distracted driving during a safe driving program titled The Arrive Alive Tour. The goal of the program was to reinforce the district’s ongoing safety

message that encourages students not to text and drive. It also provided information pertaining to DUIs and distracted driving. During the program, students viewed an educational video and safely experienced the

Arrive Alive consequences of drunken/ distracted driving through the use of a simulator. The program was sponsored and funded by the PTA and facilitated by driver’s education instructor Karen Perrone and the physical education department.

BACCA AWARD WINNERS - Babylon Town Councilwoman Jacqueline Gordon recently congratulated local artists who were recognized at the Babylon Citizens Council of the Arts (BACCA) Photography and Sculpture Show. Awards were presented for first place, second place, third place and honorable mention to those who had the best black and white photograph, best color photograph and best sculpture, among other categories. The award ceremony was held at Old Town Hall in Babylon. In an effort to promote literacy, increase parent involvement and strengthen the connection between home and school, North Babylon’s William E. DeLuca Elementary School hosted a Milk and Cookies Night for first-graders and their parents. Gathering in their pajamas, students and their parents were set up in small groups as teacher volunteers read children’s stories.

Following the group readaloud, parents and their children remained in the gymnasium and, with the lights turned off, read their own books together by flashlight, simulating a nighttime routine. To conclude the evening, the groups traveled to the cafeteria where they enjoyed milk and cookies, sang along to Parents, Partners by L. Strickler and read Diane Miness’s I Can Read poem.

Second-grade teacher Elyse Coromilas organized the night. Teachers who volunteered their evening as readers were: Kristen Berardino, Helayna Campo, Jayne Garvin, Megan Gembinski, Pat Hackett, Anne Hartmann, Michael Ierardi, Vincent Innes, Ellen Kresic, Donna Lafferty, Karen Nigro, Jodi Rebholz, Denis Scalza and Kathleen Walter.

Sudsy Fundraiser

Throughout the school year, the members of the Babylon High School DECA club not only work to become emerging leaders and entrepreneurs, but also devote countless hours to philanthropic causes. This October, DECA members and their advisers, Claire Reilly and Andy Marulis, rolled up their sleeves and coordinated a community car wash for the Babylon

Breast Cancer Coalition and the American Cancer Society, the New York State DECA designated charity. Adding in funds collected during a staff jeans day (staff made donations to wear jeans to school), the club donated a combined $450 to the two organizations. These donations will aid in the BBCC’s work to provide patient support services,

education and advocacy programs as well as the American Cancer Society’s fight against cancer. With more than 100 members spanning grades nine to 12, Babylon’s DECA club is one of the largest in the school. They perform well during annual regional competitions and often advance to compete against peers at the state level.

Eighteen West Babylon High School students had the unique opportunity to attend the Hispanic College Fair at Molloy College. Many of these students are part of the high school’s English as a Second Language program. They were able to learn

firsthand about the college application process, what qualifications colleges and universities are looking for in the ideal applicant, how to apply for scholarships and financial aid, course offerings and student life on campus. To make the experience even more meaningful,

the students had the opportunity to speak with several college representatives who provided information to assist them and their families with decisions regarding achieving higher education goals.

FALL FESTIVAL - Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilwoman Jacqueline Gordon and Town Clerk Carol Quirk were recently on hand to help kick off the Town’s Fall Festival, which was held at Town Hall Park in Lindenhurst. Photographs & Still Frames By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I am what I suppose you would classify as “slightly” obsessed with photography. Everywhere I travel, whether for the first time or the fiftieth, I am constantly on the lookout for interesting angles, landscapes, candid shots… anything that happens to catch my eye. There is something about preserving the moment that has always appealed to my sense of historical appreciation – because, after all, the second a moment has passed, it is, theoretically, history. This is not to say that every one of the thousands of photos in my digital archive would necessarily qualify as “art” or even as particularly significant to anyone but me. They are just part of the vast collection of snippets from my life, of those close to me, of the places I have been, the

events I have attended – all easily accessible whenever I, or anyone else, is in the mood for a little trip down memory lane. One would think, with such an interest in the art of photography, that I might invest in a “real” camera at some point, rather than relying solely on the somewhat questionable quality of my digital smartphone, portable and convenient as it is. And while, yes, an assortment of lenses and tools would certainly improve the technical quality, there is definitely something to be said for being able to instantly capture the scene before you. With the recent influx of social media outlets such as Facebook and Instagram, there seems to be a newfound obsession with instantly sharing every photo taken, especially among those of the younger generation. While I can appreciate a good photo as much as the next person, there is

such a thing as overkill. Case in point: I recently traveled to Ireland over the summer on what was my first “real” trip – on a plane, overseas, to a land full of countless photo ops. I took what amounted (after many retakes and deletions) to about 800 photos over the course of eight days. Had I taken a cue from the masses out on Facebook, all 800 of those pictures would have been instantly uploaded the second my feet touched American soil. Instead, I managed to narrow it down to maybe a dozen of my favorites. I’m sure all my social media “friends” and “followers” thank me for that. Photography will always be something of a passion for me. And why not? Someday, all those seemingly meaningless photos will be quite significant. Better to capture those moments now.

Addressing The Challenges Of Long-Distance Caregiving Taking care of an elderly loved one can be fulfilling. It isn’t always easy, however. Having to do it from another city or state can make the challenges seem even more complex. Out of the 34 million Americans who provide care to older family members, 15 percent live an hour or more away from their relative. Out of these, nearly 80 percent work full- or part-time. How do they manage? It takes organization, determination and a supportive employer. Long-distance caregivers

provide a wide array of services at great cost to themselves. According to a survey by the National Alliance for Caregiving, long-distance caregivers spend an average of $392 per month on travel and out-of-pocket expenses. The expenditure in time is no less than the expenditure in dollars. Out of the more than 1,100 long-distance caregivers contacted by the National Alliance for Caregiving, half of them said they spend nearly 14 hours a month arranging care services and half said they spend

another 16 hours a month checking on their care recipient or monitoring the care being received. Nearly three-quarters of these long-distance caregivers provide help with instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) such as transportation, shopping, cooking, cleaning, managing finances and medications-for an average of 22 hours per month. Considering that so many long-distance caregivers are employed, they often have to make significant adjustments to their work schedules to allow for their
