Community Celebrates Despite the less than favorable weather in the morning and early afternoon, the clouds began to clear for Babylon as the community displayed their school spirit and support for Babylon Junior-Senior High School’s Panthers football team at the

homecoming celebration on October 14th. To begin the day’s festivities, Babylon School District Superintendent of Schools Linda Rozzi welcomed various members of the Babylon community to the first Distinguished Alumni

Induction Ceremony held in the lobby of Rowe Hall. The following individuals were met with praise for their successes and accomplishments since graduating from Babylon Junior-Senior High School. This year’s inductees included Ernest Busch

Based on their musical talents and academic successes, seven Babylon Junior-Senior High School students have been recognized as premier musicians and were invited to participate in this year’s New York State School Music Association All-State and All-County music festivals. Sydney Altbacker (Treble Choir) and Peter

Schubart (Cello) have been named All-State studentmusicians and were invited to participate in the 2017 NYSSMA All-State Conference to be held in Rochester, New York from November 30th-December 3rd. anticipated football game against Center Moriches High School, the streets of Montauk Highway were lined with community members showing their support for the home team. The air was filled with the sweet sounds of the Babylon Junior-Senior High School band, and the floats decorated with a Disney theme were on full display for all to witness. Going into halftime of the football game, the Panthers displayed an incredible feat of athleticism as they held Center Moriches High

School by a score of 40-14. By the end of the fourth quarter, Babylon captured a win for the Panthers with a score of 46-14. During the halftime celebrations, Mrs. Rozzi once again introduced this year’s Distinguished Alumni, the sophomore class was declared winner of the best float contest for their excellent interpretation of “The Little Mermaid” and students Sean Baudille and Kyra Pitagno were named homecoming king and queen, respectively.

Pink at Parliament As part of its recognition of October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Parliament Place Elementary School in the North Babylon School District designated

October 18th as Pink and Denim Day. Students and staff were encouraged to show their support for the cause by wearing jeans with prominent displays of pink,

the color synonymous with breast cancer awareness. The school raised more than $500 as a result of its fundraising efforts in support of the cause.

Of Foliage and Fuzzy Friends as luck would have it, there happens to be one fairly large tree right in front of my apartment, with branches that - until recently - stretched nearly to my second-floor balcony. Every autumn, like clockwork, I would find hordes of acorns - piles, literally - on my deck each morning. Curious how they all happened to “fall” in this one area, I observed one particular squirrel as he made the rounds from branch to branch, fervently shaking each one until he had dislodged each and every nut. Some would fall down below, where he would eagerly gather them and begin digging holes to store them away; the rest, apparently, seemed to settle among my plants upstairs. Each day, I would sweep the acorns off the side of the deck and, peering over the railing, would see my little fuzzy visitor eagerly waiting to collect them. It became something of a routine, and I was only too happy to help him in his pursuit (and clear off my deck in the process). One morning, I awoke to the sound of buzzing and looked outside to see the landscape company trimming many of the trees and shrubs in the area, including “my” tree. Horrified, I looked at the now nearly-barren branches and wondered what had

become of my little fluffy-tailed companion. Was he swept away with the pile of discarded branches? Had he been permanently displaced from his chosen home? What had become of all the acorns he had yet to gather? Mildly concerned, I wondered if I would ever see him again. A few days passed, with still no sign. The next night, when I returned home from work, I decided to dine outside. It was one of those late Autumn evenings when the air was still mild and the sun had yet to set, casting a golden glow over all that the light touched. As I ate, I was startled by the sound of scurrying, and looked up to see my little fuzzy friend scampering up and down the emaciated tree, picking up the acorns that had fallen and galloping down the pathway to bury them in the tiny hole he had dug. I smiled, glad to see he was alright, despite his slightly-mangled home. Not quite a puppy, but a member of the adopted family nonetheless. A few weeks later, it seemed the acorns had all been accounted for. As I watered my mum plants, I saw something wedged between the flowers. Curious, I peered between the stems to find a single peanut shell. I guess this means he’s moving in for the winter.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted a “furry” pet of some kind, be it a puppy, kitten, bunny, even a guinea pig. Of course, once I moved into my own apartment and realized that such fuzzy companions require far more attention than I, as a full-time member of the workforce, can provide, I settled for my beloved little Buddy the Betta - and, following his passing, my new baby Betta, Norton von Spudly. Not exactly furry, but still fairly entertaining and interactive as fish go. Perhaps I should mention that, in the apartment complex where I reside, one tends to come across all sorts of creatures, from stray cats and kittens wandering the property, to turtles and fish by the pond, robins and blue jays and other assorted winged folk, and even the occasional baby fox roaming near the dumpster. And squirrels. We can’t forget our bushy-tailed friends who spend the majority of the seasons scurrying from tree to tree in search of acorns to munch on and, once the weather begins to turn chilly, store away for winter. My particular building is fairly set apart from the trees and shrubbery which line some of the other, more shaded areas of the complex; however,

Hundreds of North Babylon School District students, faculty, families and community residents painted the town blue and white as they gathered for homecoming at the high school for an afternoon full of football, fun, food and festivities on October 14th. The day was filled with various activities for the school and surrounding community to take part in together. A school-spirited parade, led by the district’s board of education and central administration, kicked off the afternoon in preparation for the Bulldogs’ game against the Centereach Cougars. The school’s

cheerleaders, marching band and representatives from the freshman, sophomore, junior and senior classes, as well as from all other schools in the district, proudly displayed their school spirit for all who lined the sidewalks to support their team. The marching band and cheerleaders performed to perfection during pregame rituals, in between plays and during halftime. The halftime festivities also included each class’ walk around the field with their banners, led by homecoming king and queen Anthony Palumbo and Aaliyah Hunter, respectively. The Bulldogs

then completed their brilliant performance en route to a 28-20 victory. The audience who had filled the bleachers to capacity cheered the Bulldogs’ every excellent play execution, stood behind their team and applauded the efforts of their opponent. The Babylon District is proud to announce that 33 Babylon Junior-Senior High School students have earned Advanced Placement Scholar awards from the College Board. These honorees include both current students and members of the Class of 2017. Of the 33 total students, 24 received the AP Scholar title for receiving a score of 3 or higher on three

or more AP Exams. Four students were given the title of AP Scholar with Honor, as they achieved an average score of at least 3.25 on all of their AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. Additionally, five students were awarded the title of AP Scholar of Distinction, including current senior Jeffrey Kaji, as they achieved

an average score of at least 3.5 on all exams taken with scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. One graduate in the Class of 2017, Gabriella Albanese, received the high honor of National AP Scholar. This award is given to students who have earned a score of at least 4 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of those exams.
