Harry Stands Alone By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Unfortunately, following last week’s printing, Harvey the Goldfish succumbed to… well, whatever it is carnival goldfish often succumb to, only five days after his “adoption” into my home. He didn’t live to see his name in print, but I’m sure he would appreciate all the condolences received upon his untimely passing. Harry, his fishbowl buddy and hide-and-seek companion, seems to be holding up quite well. Perhaps he had something to do with Harvey’s demise.
Maybe he prefers the solitude. After all, that tree is really only big enough for one average-sized goldfish to hide behind at a time. I contemplated buying Harry a new friend, but I’m a bit hesitant. Rarely has a fish seemed so lively, so content, so vivacious – darting to and fro, bouncing off the sides of the bowl. I half expect to find him lying on the counter one morning, fins up, as a result of diving headfirst over the edge. I suppose I must look gigantic to him, magnified through the bowl, looming
over his tropical sanctuary. And yet there are times when I’m standing at the counter, preparing dinner, and he will come and press his face against the glass, eagerly watching my every move as if to say, What are you making? Is it for me? Can I have some? Please?? And so, once again, as of this writing, Harry is living happily – whatever “happy” is for a goldfish. I’ll leave him on his own for a while, King of the Bowl, and see how it goes. In the meantime, I’ll bring home a copy of my column for him to read.

Outside The Box Creativity abounded when Babylon Memorial Grade School sixth-grade students in Eric Solnick’s class took part in this year’s Global Cardboard Challenge. The event was inspired by the documentary “Caine’s Arcade,” a 2012 film about a nine-year-old boy’s work to create an arcade out of cardboard at his father’s auto parts store in Los Angeles. Working under the guidance of art teacher,
Patricia Stork and library media specialist Lisa Lindeman, students collaborated in small groups to plan, build and test arcade games. In addition, the students worked with family and friends to create another smaller cardboard creation. Throughout the project, they learned the real-world values of imagination, creativity, trial and error, and teamwork. The class shared their original projects with

Tommy DeBiccari, a kindergarten student at South Bay Elementary School in West Babylon is serious about ending bullying. On October 5th, DeBiccari and his team Open Hearts completed the second annual CAPS Stand Up, Don’t Stand By 5K Walk on the Boardwalk at Sunken Meadow State Park in Kings Point. DeBiccari raised more than $400 for Child Abuse Prevention Services, a child abuse prevention resource and provider of violence prevention and child safety education. The district congratulates DeBiccari on this amazing accomplishment. He is pictured with a certificate from Principal Joann Scott for being committed to helping the school become a more friendly and caring community.

On Tuesday, October 14th, 2014, the West Babylon Board of Education unanimously adopted a resolution to present a capital projects bond referendum to the community for a public vote on Tuesday, January 13th, 2015. The amount of the proposed bond is $29,953,754. The district anticipates receiving 64.6 percent in New York State Building Aid, thereby significantly reducing the cost to district taxpayers. It is anticipated that the cost to the average homeowner will be $96 per year, or approximately $8 per month. New homeowners moving into the community will also pay their fair share of the cost of the bond referendum. If approved by voters, the proposed bond would cover the cost of major repairs and renovations throughout the district, including refurbishment of roofs;
