With the start of the new school year, SSCM firstgraders shrieked with joy over the return of their class pet. Nibbles, a 1 year-old Roborovski Dwarf Hamster, came to SSCM at the start of the last school year, when she was just 5 weeks-old. The West Babylon School District welcomed Michele P. Psarakis as executive director for finance and operations, effective September 15th. Psarakis comes to the district from the Bay Shore Union Free School District, where she previously served as chief accountant. She also served as a CPA at Michael A. Duca Co. in Garden City and as an accounting administrator, senior audit analysis and senior accountant at TIAACREF. In addition, she

was a senior accountant at both Deloitte & Touche LLP and FOJP Service Corp. in New York City, as well as an accounts payable assistant at TDK Electronics Corp. in Port Washington. Psarakis holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in banking and finance from Hofstra University and a Master of Business Administration in accounting from Baruch College. She also holds School District Business Leader certification from Dowling College. She is affiliated with the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the New York State Association of School Business Officials and the Suffolk County Association of School Business Officials.

it does make you wonder how any issues are ever resolved. What always gets me is the directory, which instructs you to select your issue and what department you would like to speak with; yet, once you actually reach a human after “longer than normal wait times,” they never seem to know what your call is in reference to. And after repeated calls, and numerous notations on the account in question, it would stand to reason that you shouldn’t have to re-explain the entire problem from the beginning. And yet…

for a completely inefficient organization. They simply have a job to do, as we all do. Flipping out never sped the process along. At the end of one of these service calls, which stretched over approximately three hours (yes, you read that correctly), the woman on the other end actually took the time out to thank me, saying my patience showed a lot about my character. Well, if dealing with customer service builds character, I think I’ve reached my quota for quite a while!

who are trained Red Cross volunteers, taught senior residents from Catholic Charities’ Brentwood location how to prepare for national disasters on September 18th. The volunteers trained residents in conjunction with September being National Preparedness Month. The volunteers gave an informative presentation in which they demonstrated how to assemble “Go Bags,” essentials that people need when evacuating their homes, as well as distributed pamphlets and other important materials. They also showed residents how to prepare for a storm, what to expect during a hurricane and the necessary precautions to take after a storm. “It was exciting that they reached out to the senior population, Assistant Coordinator of Day Habilitation Services Karen Gramarossa said. “They were very receptive, especially about in case of emergency contacts in their phones and registering for emergency services.” The Red Cross group, which was formed in July 2010, consists of 13 trained volunteers who through peer to peer training and presentations share vital information on disaster preparedness and fire safety. In May 2014, they won the Long Island Imagine Awards’ Pilot Benefit Group Innovation Award for their community efforts.
