The Troop attended Camp Yawgoog which is located in Rockville, Rhode Island the week of July 12th through July 19th. For Yawgoog’s 100th season, fourteen boys and six adults attended camp, the scouts earned 47 merit badges, two

scouts advanced in rank, the troop earned honor troop, took 2nd place in troop tournament, 1st place in the bakeoff contest, 2nd place in campsite decoration/ninja theme and were a strong contender for Elmo’s Troop of the Week. West Babylon’s Tara Hack, 27, is the new host of a college based, student-focused news program airing on Suffolk County Community College’s social media channels, web site and student portal, and soon on television screens throughout the college’s three campuses. “Suffolk Hacked” was launched earlier this month with a student focus, combined with information about athletics, campus clubs and departments students should know about. The program has taken the campus by storm. Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay and the College’s Board of Trustees recently recognized Hack at a Board of Trustees meeting where an episode of her show was shown. “I am grateful for this tremendous opportunity that would not have been possible without the support of my fellow students and the faculty, staff and administration at Suffolk County Community College,” Hack said. “Tara has broken new ground with her innovative approach,” said Suffolk County

Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay. “We look forward to seeing more from Tara and having it seen far and wide.” Hack plans to use her experience as the host of “Suffolk Hacked” to hone her writing and oncamera technique for a demonstration reel for a future career in broadcast television. Hack, a Radio and Television Production major, is no stranger to performing and has been writing and performing her own music since she was a child – even teaching herself how to play guitar at just 14 years-old by watching instructional videos on YouTube. Hack plays her original music three days per week with MUNY, the Musicians Under New York program underwritten by the MTA, in Penn Station and Brooklyn’s Atlantic Terminal. When she was 18, Tara co-wrote a song entitled “Saya Tidak Bersalah” (I’m Not Guilty) about an Australian woman, Schapelle Corby, who was jailed in Indonesia. The song quickly gained international airplay and was featured in The Sydney Morning Herald and Brisbane Times. Here at home the song was played on college radio stations, including at the University of Rhode Island and University of Colorado at Boulder where Tara was asked to play at the Conference of World Affairs. Tara continued her humanitarian efforts by penning another song, “She Falls Down, ” to raise awareness about domestic violence. The song was used as the background in a Chicago public service announcement.

I’ve been reﬂecting on my high school days quite a bit lately. Maybe it’s the back to school fever in the air, the specter of autumn and homecoming celebrations on the horizon… or perhaps the fact that I have seen more fellow graduates and former teachers in the last several weeks than I have, well, probably over the last five years. Not that reminiscing is anything new for me, per se, but I suppose the more you reconnect, the more vibrant the faded memories become. What were once old snapshots and slightly dogeared pages of a yearbook are brought to life once again, conjuring happy thoughts of days gone by.

Sure, life has gone on since then and taken us with it in various directions; but there is still something about those good old high school days that brings a smile to the face, mine anyway. They say some of the best friendships are forged during those formative years and that, if you hold on to even a handful of them, you should consider yourself extremely lucky. I tend to agree. As much as we have all moved on – with some pursuing college degrees and careers, others settling down to start a family, and still others on a path all their own – there is a part of me that believes, deep down, we are all simply trying to reclaim that lost innocence of youth, of days when life seemed simpler

and possibilities stretched infinitely before us. Call me crazy, but who among us wouldn’t love to have just a bit of that back? Here’s to nostalgia… here’s to the good old days… here’s to taking a look in the mirror at who we’ve become, and realizing that, for better or worse, we all still resemble that 16 yearold sitting on the bleachers at Homecoming… or passing notes in the back of a classroom… or anxiously studying for exams wondering what the future years would bring. So here we are. No shame in looking back now and then to realize how we arrived at precisely this point, and celebrating the many wonderful memories made along the way.

The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund, a nonprofit organization established to honor the memory of Brittney Walsh, is holding its 3rd Annual Bowling Fundraiser at Farmingdale Lanes on October 24th. she actually tumbled down the rabbit hole. But is the theme of loss of innocence ubiquitous in only literature or cinemas? Not at all. Loss of innocence is a real live thing that people experience daily. And with technology at our fingertips, we are exposed to this recurring theme at increasingly younger ages. Television is vulgar and crude. Commercials are even shockingly inappropriate. Reality TV is showcasing and glamorizing the downfall of society. Children are being exposed to this before they even leave elementary school. Dropping the f-bomb doesn’t have the same shock value it did years ago. The idea of sex and sexual innuendos are thrown around. Children

Twenty-eight Babylon Junior-Senior High School current students and members of the Class of 2015 have been recognized as Advanced Placement Scholars by the College Board. These honors were bestowed upon the students based on their exceptional achievement on the national AP exams. “We are very proud of the 28 students who were honored as AP Scholars,” said Linda Rozzi, Babylon School District’s superintendent of schools. “This recognition follows months of hard work and commitment to academics. I extend my congratulations to both the students and their teachers

who prepared them well for these exams.” AP Scholar honors are awarded based on the number of exams taken and the students’ scores on those exams. Babylon students earned the following: • 21 students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by receiving a score of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams. • 3 students — Ryan Cosgro, Adam Gumbardo and Sarah Mclean — qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of 3.25 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on

four or more of those exams. • 4 students — Mohankumar Chintarlapalli, Sam Dickran, Ronald Pashen and William Ye — qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and grades of 4 or higher on five or more of these exams. Student Spotlight The loss of innocence is a common, reoccurring theme in high-school level English literature. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, for instance, loss of innocence is seen when Jack attempts to hunt and kill his first pig. In The Kite Runner, Hassan loses his innocence when he is raped by Assef in an alley. In the wellknown novel written by Mary Shelley, Frankenstein, the creature loses his innocence the day he was created, due to Victor abandoning him in his basement. Loss of innocence is even prevalent in movies, such as in Alice in Wonderland, when Alice cluelessly drinks from the “drink me” glass. Some can even argue that she lost her innocence before that, when

see this, young adults see this - and it makes everything look like no big deal. No one is scared of anything anymore. No one is innocent anymore. Everyone likes to say that they are, but no one truly is. Everyone has tried things they weren’t supposed to. Everyone has incorporated profane words into their daily vocabulary. We are exposed to this on television, so it’s grown to be acceptable. To sum it up, loss of innocence is a common theme in English literature and Hollywood films. But now, with the help of constant, oneclick technology, we can all lose our innocence as young children. And we can all do it together.

What Are You Going To Do With The Ashes

One of the growing problems with cremation is what to do with the cremated remains (ashes) after the cremation has taken place. The Catholic Church simply states that the cremated remains of the person should be treated the same as the body. Ashes should be placed in an urn and interred in a family cemetery plot or placed in an above ground niche. Each cemetery has its own set of rules regarding cremated remains. One will say that the cremated remains constitute the equivalent of a body. Thus interring ashes in some cemeteries is equivalent in interring a casket. Some cemeteries allow three interments of ashes in each gravesite. Some cemeteries insist on an urn or cement urn vault for cremated remains. Each cemetery has a different set of rules and you should check with your cemetery regarding their rules and regulations. The Westhampton Presbyterian Church has a memorial garden where cremated remains can be interred and the name of the deceased can be placed on the monument in the garden. St. Mark’s Episcopal Church has above ground niches behind the church also in a memorial garden. Calverton National Cemetery provides above ground niches for ashes. Long Island National Cemetery uses small graves which are too near a tree or road to inter a full size casket for interring ashes, providing both parties agree to be cremated. If only the husband wants to be cremated, and the wife does not, then the ashes are interred in a full size grave so that the wife can be buried at a later date. Many people opt to have their ashes spread in the ocean. The law is that the ashes must be spread at a distance of three miles from the shoreline. The realty is there are more ashes on shorelines than there are in any cemetery. Some people like to keep their loved ones ashes home with them. There is special jewelry that has been designed so that some of the ashes can be kept in a pendant or key chain or in a ring so that they are always near. Funeral homes are only required to hold ashes for two years. After this time, and after proper notification, funeral homes are allowed to inter the ashes in marked graves. However, I have had people come back to me after 20 years and say that mom has passed and now they need dads ashes so they can be buried together. My reason for writing this column is to make you aware of the fact that something has to be done with the ashes after the cremation takes place. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call us at any time.

Exceptional Achievement West Babylon School District’s Advanced Placement Scholars were honored by the College Board for their exceptional achievement on the national AP exams. In total, 75 West Babylon Senior High School current students and members of the Class of 2015 were recognized. AP Scholar honors are awarded based on the number of exams taken and the students’ scores on those exams. West Babylon students earned the following: • 49 students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by receiving a

Kayaking for a Cause

On Saturday, September 19th, the Town of Babylon hosted the first annual “Kayaking for a Cause” event at Cedar Beach Marina, bringing over 50 kayakers out to paddle in support of Amityville’s Hunter Squires Jackson American Legion Post 1218, which was recently damaged as a result of Superstorm Sandy and vandalism. The total amount raised for the local veterans topped $15,000, made up of registration fees from the event, contributions collected from local businesses and a large donation from Island Park based American EXCEPTIONAL ACHIEVEMENT - More than two dozen West Babylon High School Legion Post 1029. “This event not seniors were recognized as AP Scholars. opportunity for a funfilled day on the water but also for us to give back to individuals who already gave so much for this country,” said Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, who organized the event. “I am proud that we were able to help the veterans of Hunter Squires Jackson Post 1218, as they work to get their building back to working condition.” A ceremony was held to launch the kayakers at Cedar Beach Marina, where Deputy Supervisor Martinez welcomed visitors and Councilwoman Jackie Gordon, a retired Lt. Colonel of the United States Army Reserves, detailed the hardships that the Hunter Squires Jackson

post has faced since their facility was damaged. A check was presented to Post Commander Charlie Martin. Those participating in the event launched their kayaks at 9:00 a.m. and embarked on one of three trails, depending on skill level: 2.5 miles for beginners, 3.5 for intermediate and 5.5 for advanced. Kayakers had the opportunity to explore little seen areas of the Great South Bay including views of Cedar Island and sights of marine wildlife, such as snowy egrets and blue herons. Following the tour, kayakers were invited to the Cedar Beach Hut to celebrate the day’s festivities with a free lunch.
