The Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts, BACCA will be hosting the 9th annual Harvest Moon Gala on Thursday, October 20th, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Gemelli’s at Bergen Point. It’s been 15 years since I last set foot on the Edward Kienle Memorial Field as a member of the Lindenhurst Class of 2000. Fifteen years of living and learning and building a life based on the foundation set forth in the schools of good old Lindy, from the playgrounds of Daniel Street Elementary School all the way on up to the hallways of Lindenhurst High School. Each year, on Homecoming weekend, I return to the site where it all began – to reminisce, to reflect, and to soak in the autumn sun with some fellow alumni. Funny thing is, I rarely run into

anyone from my own class; mostly faculty, coaches, the occasional younger sibling of someone I went to school with… I suppose the novelty wears off after the first year or two, certainly once college has been completed and “real” life begins. But for me, it is and always will be, home. The field, the bleachers, the school… the crisp fall air that signals the start of football season, Homecoming floats parading down the street and the scent of concession stand goodies wafting through the air. Lindy pride on display in all its green and white glory, indeed. Sure, there is college Homecoming and all the

festivities that come along with it as well – but the connection is not nearly as strong as the one forged in the district I called home for 13 years, 13 formative years of discovering my passions in life and gaining the confidence to pursue them. Once a Bulldog, Always a Bulldog, as they say in Lindy. And so I will continue to sit on those bleachers and smile, and remember all the good times. I will cheer on the home team, no matter if I recognize the faces, and find comfort in the unique bond that we all share. I will reflect upon those friendships forged and those many special moments enjoyed through the years. Go Bulldogs!

There are plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables coming right from West Babylon Junior High School. The school’s Garden Club grows and maintains an organic vegetable garden every year. The club takes care

of 16 raised beds where they grow tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, corn, eggplant, various beans, peppers, squash, blackberries, raspberries, onions, garlic, herbs and sunflowers. The Garden Club planted most of the vegetables in the spring

and members came to school once a week over the summer to harvest the vegetables, weed and maintain the raised beds. Most of the produce from their garden is donated to the local food pantry and students also get to take fresh vegetables home.

Saint Cyril and Methodius’s Cross Country team hit the ground running in Deer Park, even before the school year got rolling! With Coach Amber Sanchez at the helm, the team began meeting up in August to start training and learning the ins and outs of what it takes to challenge themselves in the coming weeks during the Cross Country season. Coach Sanchez is a triathlete, fitness instructor and mother of three boys at Saints Cyril and Methodius and has been volunteer coaching SSCM’s Cross Country team for three years now. The Catholic Middle School Athletic Association (CMSAA) provides a structure for interscholastic athletic

competition among middle schools in the Diocese of Rockville Centre, offering a variety of sports each season, ranging from Baseball, Softball, Basketball and Soccer to Volleyball, Lacrosse, Bowling, and Cross Country. In Cross Country running, teams and individuals run a race on open-air courses over natural terrain. The courses vary in length, may include surfaces of grass and earth, pass through woodlands and open country, and include hills, flat ground and sometimes gravel road. The benefits of Cross Country are both mental and physical. Cross Country training builds versatility and stamina, with experience running

over a wide range of speeds and terrains. Saints Cyril and Methodius has participated in CMSAA programs for over five years and this year’s Cross Country Team includes 16 middle school boys and girls, whose practices and meets take them to a diverse range of Long Island terrains and parks, such as Belmont Lake State Park, Sunken Meadow, and Heckscher Park, to name a few. At the heart of the CMSAA’s Mission Statement is their role in helping develop well-rounded athletes, so the program’s coaches seek to promote physical endurance and good sportsmanship, while fostering teamwork and Catholic values in all of their players.

One of the growing problems with cremation is what to do with the cremated remains (ashes) after the cremation has taken place. The Catholic Church simply states that the cremated remains of the person should be treated the same as the body. Ashes should be placed in an urn and interred in a family cemetery plot or placed in an above ground niche. Each cemetery has its own set of rules regarding cremated remains. One will say that the cremated remains constitute the equivalent of a body. Thus interring ashes in some cemeteries are equivalent in interring a casket. Some cemeteries allow three interments of ashes in each gravesite. Some cemeteries insist on an urn or cement urn vault for cremated remains. Cemeteries in this area have very liberal rules concerning the interment of cremated remains. Each cemetery has a different set of rules and you should check with your cemetery regarding their rules and regulations. The Westhampton Presbyterian Church has a memorial garden where cremated remains can be interred and name of the deceased can be placed on the monument in the garden. St. Mark’s Episcopal Church has above ground niches behind the church also in a memorial garden. Calverton National Cemetery provides above ground niches for ashes. Long Island National Cemetery uses small graves which are too near a tree or road to inter a full size casket for interring ashes. Providing both parties agree to be cremated. If only the husband wants to be cremated and the wife does not, then the ashes are interred in a full size grave so that the wife can be buried at a later date. Many people opt to have their ashes spread in the ocean. The law is that the ashes must be spread at a distance of three miles from the shoreline. The reality is, there are more ashes on shorelines than there are in any cemetery. Some people like to keep their loved ones ashes home with them. There is special jewelry that has been designed so that some of the ashes can be kept in a pendant or key chain or in a ring so that they are always near. Funeral homes are only required to hold ashes for two years. After that time and after proper notification funeral homes are allowed to inter the ashes in marked graves. However, I have had people come back to me after 20 years and say that mom has passed and now they need dads ashes so they can be buried together. My reason for writing this column is to make you aware of the fact that something has to be done with the ashes after the cremation takes place.
