Ushering in the Equinox By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Ok, now it’s official. Autumn can commence. Why? Because today is the actual autumnal equinox, the moment all those fall fanatics have been eagerly anticipating since, well, probably since last autumn. I know September 1st is the unofficial introduction of all things pumpkin spice, but, believe it or not, there are a few more factors to consider when introducing a new season. For instance, cooler weather, the start of football and “Sunday Fundays,” playoff baseball, fall TV premieres… all things that were absent as of September 1st. And, while Halloween merchandise
has been on the shelves since July, guess what? It’s still over a month away. And Christmas – don’t even get me started on that. Three months to go. Three MONTHS. Plenty of time. No need to make those lists and check them twice quite yet. And yet… as I write this, the temperature sits at a positively summery 81º - perfect for pumpkin picking, hayrides and corn mazes… if all those things took place on a beach. But no worries, the season is still young – plenty of time for the autumn chill to settle in and the boots and scarves to be dragged out of the closet for that first brisk afternoon walk through the fallen foliage.
‘Tis the season of fall festivals and Oktoberfest celebrations, of raking and home improvement projects, of toasty evenings spent curled up with a (pumpkin) spiced latte and a book. Sure, it has its benefits. If you like that sort of thing. Me, I’ll be the one walking along the shoreline at the beach, camera (or iPhone) in hand, trying to capture the perfect autumnal sunset shot. I’ll get into the spirit eventually. Maybe once October hits. I might even check out the Halloween merchandise. And start making my Christmas list… Nah, who am I kidding. That’s what Black Friday is for.

The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) has announced an October 2nd, application deadline for tuition reimbursement through their historic educational initiative, the Higher Education Learning Plan (HELP). This statewide community college tuition reimbursement program is geared towards recruiting and retaining volunteer firefighters throughout New York State. “The FASNY HELP program has benefitted hundreds of dedicated firefighters serving communities across the State. In addition to helping meet the staffing needs of local departments, a better educated firefighter is simply a better firefighter. For the student volunteers and the fire departments, this is the very definition of a ‘win-win’ situation,” said FASNY President Robert McConville. Under FASNY HELP, any active volunteer firefighter, in good standing, and who hasn’t already achieved a college degree is eligible for up to 100% tuition reimbursement. People concerned about breast cancer are now able to chat online with a social worker or breast cancer survivor through a new service offered by the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. The Adelphi program, the oldest breast cancer hotline in the country and located on Long Island, has been providing emotional support and information to New Yorkers for 35 years. Says program supervisor Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone announced today that more than 3,500 runners from twenty five states and four countries participated in the Inaugural Suffolk County Marathon & Half Marathon to Support Our Veterans. All net proceeds generated from the event will go directly to veteran service organizations in Suffolk County. The male and female winner of the full Marathon were: Chau Zhou, NYC2:46:50, Caroline Levesque, Rhode Island-3:12:02. The wheelchair division winner: Peter Hawkins, Malverne-2:13 The male and female winner of the half marathon were: Anthony Famiglietti, North Carolina-1:07:35, Pamela O’Sullivan, Babylon-1:24:02.

Along with raising funds for the veterans, the Suffolk County Marathon was a qualifier for the 2016 Boston Marathon. Sunday’s race was held on the last day for most registrants who want to quality for the world-
renowned race. “On behalf of our 1.5 million residents in Suffolk County, we are forever grateful for the commitment and sacrifices that our veterans and active service men and women make every day to protect our freedom,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “Expanding and enhancing services for our heroes when they return home is vital, that is why we were here today and that is why every dollar of the proceeds from the event will go towards doing exactly that. It was an absolute privilege to run my second marathon alongside with these heroes and supporters as we helped the veterans in our community with each step we took.”

FEMA Extends Deadline
The Federal Emergency Management Agency has extended the deadline for flood insurance policyholders to submit their Hurricane Sandy Claims for review. The last day to submit claims is now October 15th, 2015. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced today that any additional flood insurance proceeds up to $20,000 will not be treated as duplicative. Federal agencies cannot provide disaster assistance for losses covered by insurance. HUD’s announcement stated that “this will eliminate the need for HUD grantees to reclaim assistance from these households or to repay those funds through non-federal sources. To date, three out of four National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) claimants have received less than $20,000 in additional compensation from FEMA and will not face any possible repayment.” Roy Wright, FEMA’s Deputy Associate Administrator for Insurance and Mitigation, encouraged policyholders to call FEMA and request a review if they believe their claims were underpaid for any reason. The review process we have established is designed to be simple, fair, and accessible without paid legal assistance. Suffolk Victims Remembered Suffolk County’s 178 victims of the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks were remembered yesterday in a ceremony at the Gardens of Remembrance, a memorial site dedicated to 9/11 victims at the Armed Forces Plaza in Hauppauge. Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory joined Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and other county legislators in reading the victims’ names.
“On the 14th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, we remember the thousands who perished, the tremendous acts of bravery that followed, and the families who continue to mourn the loss of their loved ones,” said Presiding Officer Gregory. “We grieve for all the victims, including the 178 who were Suffolk County’s own. Students, teachers and administrators at Marion G. Vedder Elementary School in the North Babylon School District came together to pay tribute to two cherished members of its school community who recently passed by planting and dedicating trees in their name. In separate ceremonies, fifth-grader Taylor Dattoli and longtime school security guard Bernard Lettieri were honored among their loved ones. Dattoli, who tragically lost her battle to cancer, was
celebrated as a precious and radiant student who touched the lives of so many of her teachers and peers. Lettieri, who warmly welcomed students to school with a glowing smile everyday, will be remembered as a friend to each member of the MGV family. During the ceremonies, fifth-grade chorus students sang songs of tribute in loving memory of Dattoli and Lettieri. Faculty members spoke about how Dattoli’s and Lettieri’s hearts of gold impacted their lives, and students
who had created paper flowers and adorned them with heartfelt messages walked up to a basket to place them inside. Finally, the trees were planted and dedicated in the school’s Children’s Garden. The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund, a nonprofit organization established to honor the memory of Brittney Walsh, is holding its 3rd Annual Bowling Fundraiser at Farmingdale Lanes on October 24th. On June 24th, 2012, just two days after Brittney’s high school graduation, she was killed by a drunk driver. This tragic incident has left her family and friends in a great deal of pain. Long Islanders as a whole have expressed their grief, shock and sympathy. The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund has been designed to assist children just like Brittney - young people who excel in academics, push themselves to give 100% in sports and are active in school clubs. The goal is to provide three high school seniors each year with scholarships to help make their futures a little brighter.
