During the morning event, Superintendent of Schools Richard S. Rozakis welcomed back staff members following a busy summer within the district and prepared them for the year ahead. “We’re very happy to welcome back our faculty and staff for the 20142015 school year,” said Mr. Rozakis. “It promises to be one of the best school years yet!” During the summer, the district broke ground on the first phase of the community-approved bond, while more than 500 hours of curriculum work was completed.

In an age where technology has overtaken society, it is only natural to pause periodically and wonder, at what cost? These days, most everything can be communicated via text, various messenger apps, social networks and emoticons, with little reserved for good oldfashioned person-to-person contact. As the masses jump on the latest smartphones and tablets the moment they’re unveiled, it is hard not to think how did we manage to exist before? Personally, I did not own a cell phone until the later college years, if even then. Prior to that, it was

payphones and asking the teacher for a pass to the Main Office to call home in an emergency. Nowadays, walk into any elementary school and smartphones are just as common a trend as the latest sneakers and accessories. What’s wrong with this picture? Plenty. First off, no eight year-old needs a smartphone. An old, hand-me-down standard cell phone in case of emergencies? Perhaps. And once you move on to middle school and high school, the potential for cheating, texting during class and surfing the web instead of paying attention to the lesson at hand skyrockets. I don’t care

Even though the cars are marked with these flags, it is important that they follow all traffic laws and drive safely while driving in the procession. Smooth Start To The Year Following a busy summer of curriculumwriting projects and continuing capital work associated with the community-approved bond referendum, it was a smooth start to the 20142015 school year in the Babylon School District. With their backpacks on and school supplies

at the ready, students were welcomed into their respective buildings by administrators, teachers and staff members for the first day of school on September 3rd. Continuing their yearly tradition of easing the transition into full-day kindergarten, Babylon Elementary School hosted

an orientation on the first day for students and parents. In late August, the Babylon Junior-Senior High School hosted an orientation for seventhgraders and their parents, which allowed the students to become familiar with the building, as well as their schedule and lockers.

Returning To The Classroom The excitement of North Babylon Union Free School District’s students on their first day of the 2014-2015 school year did not wear off during the rest of their first week. Throughout the first week, students arrived at the district’s seven buildings ready to tackle the academic challenges before them. The Class of

2015 entered its final year at North Babylon High School, while the Class of 2027 began kindergarten in the district’s five elementary schools. Children at William E. DeLuca Jr. Elementary School stepped off of their buses eager to begin their first day. Teachers and administrators, including Principal

Norann McManus, greeted students and assisted them off the school buses. “I have children who run up to give me a hug before school everyday,” said McManus. “Seeing how happy they are, and especially seeing how excited they are to begin school, just makes my day.”
