ATTENTION with Buddy the Betta ALL MIDDLE & Alone in a Bowl: My Saga HIGH SCHOOL WRITERS: By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

It’s been days, and still no sign of my human. No light on in the kitchen. No food pellet delivery at dinnertime. No – dare I say it – bath time. Nothing. Where did she go? Alone in my bowl, I swim my solitary laps, counting down the hours, days, weeks… it must be weeks by now. Just me and my plant (which, by the way, is starting to look pretty tasty at this point). I should’ve known something was up when I found a few extra ﬂakes in my bowl right after the last human sighting. And the suitcase… what was that for? Come to think of it, I heard something about “vacation,” whatever that

is, and then this giant bettashaped vitamin was placed in my bowl with promises of food coming shortly. When? It’s already been at least a month. Time tends to fast forward when you live in a bowl. But, wait… here it is – a ﬂake. And another. Where did they come from? No human in sight, but this little vitamin seems to be melting into food! Oh thank goodness! She didn’t forget about me after all. I wonder if she’ll ever be back? {826 Days Later…} I hear a noise! The front door… the light… MY HUMAN HAS RETURNED! Oh boy, oh boy! If I had longer fins, I’d give her the biggest hug ever! Oh, and here comes the good food,

my gourmet pellets, with a few extra thrown in – how sweet. She didn’t abandon me after all. But where did she go? I see the suitcase… but no presents? No souvenirs for Buddy? And what’s this about “bath time” now? She’s been home five minutes and already this nonsense about cleaning out the remnants of the vitamin from my bowl. Good grief. There had better be a good explanation for all this. I expect a special trip to the pet store this weekend to pick out a new toy… and extra food… and at least a week’s notice the next time one of these “vacation” things takes place. Better yet, I expect to be invited along.

their school supplies and worked on beginning of the year arts and craft projects, while second-graders got a chance to visit old teachers and find their new classrooms. Principal Jessica Kemler greeted the students outside the main entrance as they walked in to start the new year. It was the beginning of a new chapter for incoming seventh-graders at Babylon Junior-Senior High School, and the final first day of school for incoming

seniors. Staff members throughout North Babylon School District gathered at North Babylon High School for the annual Superintendent’s Conference Day prior to the start of the 2015-2016 school year. The program, comprised of a series of professional development workshops and inspirational messages, was designed to reinforce the ideals of hard work, patience, perseverance, dedication and enthusiasm among teachers. The educators were praised for all that they do with their

crafts, and encouraged to continue challenging their students to reach new heights and follow their dreams. Superintendent of Schools Glen Eschbach introduced the district’s new teachers and spoke about the importance of all faculty members believing in their students. Eschbach presented a motivational video to complement his presentation, and said he is delighted to be at the helm of a district that offers so many opportunities to its students. “During my first two

months here, I have had the opportunity to meet several teachers and administrators, and to also look at programs and policies, and I have to say: there are a lot of great things going on here at North Babylon School District,” he said. “I know that our teachers and educators work tirelessly to help out students be the best they can possibly be. Women Achievers Breakfast The Women’s Fund of Long Island (WFLI) will host its 21st annual Women Achievers Breakfast on October 8th, a much-anticipated event that draws more than 700 attendees each year as it celebrates the accomplishments of Long Island women who have made outstanding contributions to their communities and their industries. This year’s honorees are Isma Habib Chaudhry, MD, President of the Islamic Center of Long Island; Dorothy Forte, co-chair of the Manhasset Women’s Coalition Against Breast Cancer Outreach program; and Bernice Sims, author, civil rights activist, social worker and artist. Rachel Gladstone from Smithtown High School West and Abby Roden from East Hampton High School will be awarded the Shapiro-McCormick Young Women Leader Awards for their remarkable leadership roles in their schools and communities.
