Osman, a life-long resident of West Babylon, was a Vietnam veteran and recipient of a Purple Heart, Bronze Star and the Vietnamese Cross for Gallantry for actions taken while patrolling the rivers of Vietnam.

And just like that, Labor Day is upon us. The muchmaligned â€œLast Weekend Of Summer,â€? even though summer wonâ€™t, in actuality, end for nearly another month. But in a society dictated by the school calendar, apparently we must all take our cues from those less-than-thrilled students returning to the classroom and collectively mourn over those last golden beach days, that final holiday BBQâ€Ś and letâ€™s not forget to whisk away any remaining traces of white clothing, the ultimate â€œfallâ€? faux pas. (If only it was actually fall!) Itâ€™s funny, as much as we all anticipate summer each

year, I would be willing to bet that most of us did not do half of what we planned to over these last three months. Head to the beach every weekend? Doubtful. Plan BBQs and boat trips and day trips to Montauk and Fire Island? Maybe one, here and there. A few stolen moments is all we ever seem to get between work and daily responsibilities and prior commitments â€“ even the children, supposedly the ones with all the free time these days, seem to be stretched thin with all their extracurricular activities, youth sports and play dates. When is there time for fun? But maybe the key to fun is to remain busy, to fill our days with enough activities

and people to make the time fly, to enjoy while being super-productiveâ€Ś and then to share every moment on Facebook and Instagram of course! (Because really, if itâ€™s not posted on some sort of social media outlet, did it really happen??) Seems to work for most people â€“ in this generation anyway. And with that, we bid adieu to the sun and surf, to long hours of daylight, to warm summer nights and all the excitement that comes with living on Long Island at this time of year. But donâ€™t worry â€“ the calendar says we still have a little time left to savor those last golden days. Be sure to make them count.

On Saturday, September 14th, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Strong Island Derby Revolution, a Suffolkbased all-female roller derby team, is inviting those interested in joining this unique American sport to participate in a free bootcamp, which will focus on basic skills, hitting and blocking drills, as well as proper skating form. The bootcamp, which will be held at World Gym, located at 384 Mark Tree Rd. in East Setauket, will also give prospective new members a chance to meet league members and find out more about the sport. Requirements for a new skater include being at least 21 years of age or older and coming to the event with a pair of quad skates, knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, mouth guard and helmet. There is also a limited supply of loaner equipment available on a first come first serve basis.

Strong Island Derby Revolution formed in the spring of 2011 and currently boasts almost 50 league members, including skaters, referees, non-skating officials and coaches. In recent years, there has been a tremendous growth in roller derby around the world. The sport’s first World Cup was held in Toronto in December of 2011. All teams are DIY organizations with the skaters not only training hard on the track but also running the business side, doing everything from securing venues to selling tickets and designing merchandise. The next home bout for Strong Island Derby Revolution is on Saturday, September 28th at 8 p.m. at World Gym in East Setauket. 50TH ANNIVERSARY - Stephanie & Donald Teufel of West Babylon were wed on May 18th, 1963.
