Long Island Game Farm - Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo was founded in 1970 by Stanley and Diane Novak. Today, almost 50 years later the park is home to over a hundred animals, including over 35 different species. To thank the visitors that have kept the park going for 48 years, the Long Island Game Farm is throwing its first ever Founder’s Day Celebration – A Family Appreciation Day, on Saturday, August 26. All day long, admission will be $6(+tax)/adult and one free child admission per adult (each additional child is $6 +tax). Rain date is Sunday, August 27th. During this celebration, not only will the park be thanking its guests, but they will also be honoring the park’s founders, Stanley and Diane. Guests will be able to meet Diane and her daughter Melinda, the current President and Vice President, to learn about the park’s history. This meet and greet will take place at the gazebo at

noon. “We’ve been wanted to host an event like this for a while now,” Vice President, Melinda Novak states. “We love our visitors, they are the ones that make this park successful and we want them to know that it is all appreciated. Plus, we couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate 48 years as a Long Island Family Tradition.” In addition to a being able to meet and talk with Diane and Melinda, those in attendance can also enjoy one of the Long Island Game Farms featured summer shows – Nature Nick’s Animal Adventure. This experience, presented by “Nature” Nick Jacinto, is the only animal show in the northeast to include kangaroos, birds of prey and monkeys! This is the last weekend the show is running for the season, it will not return until next summer. Nature Nick’s Animal Adventure will be featured on the Game Farm’s main stage at 11:30

Chapter 35 Today, I turn 35, making that dreaded leap into the next age bracket. So long 1834. It’s been fun. Though age is but a number, it does tend to carry added significance the higher those digits climb. Each year brings with it a sort of reevaluation of life. Where am I at? Where do I want to be? And, most importantly, how to traverse that at-times tricky road between points A & B. Uneven as it might seem, I do believe we all have a path we are destined to travel. How we choose to navigate it remains somewhat open-ended. I’ve always felt my generation existed on the cusp of two worlds. A child of the 90’s, my teen years were spent listening to the sounds of *NSync and Britney Spears and watching T.G.I.F. on ABC

Friday nights. The entire grunge movement passed me by, as did many of the cult classic movies of the time. Twenty years later, I have found a new appreciation for all that came before. Pop culture aside, I feel my particular age group remains the last of the “old school.” We were brought up in an age where technology was limited to televisions and radios, Walkmen and cassette tapes. No one had a cell phone until I was well into college, perhaps a beeper if they were lucky. If you wanted to reach a friend, you called their home and most likely were greeted by their parents, who knew you by name. A night out consisted of being dropped off at the local mall or movie theater, then picked up by those same parents and taken

to a local diner. To say things have changed would be an understatement. Of course, this is the case with each generation, as its members grow and ﬂourish and begin to explore the world on their own. We pick up on elements of those who came before and modify them to fit our constantly evolving view of our surroundings as they, too, evolve on a near daily basis. The hope, in the end, is that we will never completely let go of those things which shaped us during our most formative years, the core values we were raised with. No matter how life may change, no matter how many age brackets we pass through, we must remain true to ourselves. Here’s to 35. Here’s to the next chapter, a fresh page in the old book.

Eco-conscious lifestyles may have transformed the ways people behave at home or on the job, but many schools have taken a little longer to embrace eco-friendly practices. But that doesn’t have to continue, as younger generations of students are growing up green and ready to embrace some green strategies in the

classroom. One of the easiest steps to take is to reduce paper usage. According to Edutopia, a K-12 learning and education resource, the average school uses approximately 250,000 pieces of paper per school year. This estimate is based on an average of 50 reams of paper per teacher at a 100-teacher school.

Instead of relying so heavily on paper, students can take notes on laptops or tablets while teachers can rely on smartboards and notebooks for classroom lessons. When paper must be used, make a concentrated effort to discard it in designated recycling bins in each classroom.

On Wednesday, August 23rd, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) will team up with the Long Island Ducks to host Alzheimer’s Awareness Night at the Ducks home game at Bethpage Ballpark (3 Court House Drive in Central Islip). Game time is 6:35 p.m. “50,000 Long Islanders are living with Alzheimer’s right now,” said Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr., President and CEO of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. “AFA is very pleased to once again partner with the Long Island Ducks to help raise awareness about this disease and let people know where they can turn to get help if Alzheimer’s enters their life or the life of their loved one.” “We’re pleased to work with the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America to utilize the ballpark as a platform for greater Alzheimer’s awareness,” said Ducks President/GM Michael Pfaff. “We are happy to support the AFA’s efforts and look forward to partnering with them on August 23rd.” The first 2,500 fans in attendance for the game will receive commemorative t-shirts, courtesy of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. The second point on which I would like to focus is cremation does NOT mean there isn’t any wake or religious prior to the cremation. It simply means that instead of burial or entombment in a mausoleum, the deceased is cremated. But first, you can have a wake if desired, religious services, and a funeral mass before the cremation. While promoting the values that underline the Church’s preference for burial of the body, the Church must exercise sensitive pastoral judgement concerning the choice that nearly 20% of Catholics are making in favor of cremation. Economic, geographic, ecological, or family factors on occasion make cremation the only feasible choice.

Teachers provide many things to their students. In addition to an education, support and guidance, many teachers also feel compelled to enhance their classrooms with supplies they’ve purchased out-ofpocket. According to a poll of 1,500 teachers conducted by the educational resource Edutopia, 93 percent of teachers feel obligated or somewhat obligated to buy school supplies for their

A report published in early 2016 by the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities found that

many states now provide less financial support per student than they did before the recession took hold roughly nine years ago. Districts forced to work under tight budgets are increasingly outsourcing the costs of supplies to parents. When parents fail to provide supplies, teachers are bearing the brunt of the costs to avoid seeing their students go without necessary resources.
