Additional details on the programs that Suffolk County received honors from the National Association of Counties are: County Administration and Management: Communication Strategy Suffolk County is a diverse County with 1.2 million residents and nearly 9,100 of employees. A chief complaint that has hindered the success of many efforts has been the lack of communication both from the bottom up and the top down within County government. The need for effective communications, having been identified, resulted in four strategic, robust efforts: An idea

management system, an educational monthly newsletter, a statistical metrics management system and a repository of improvement tools and training on an internal intranet site. Creating an Environment of Continuous Improvement Suffolk County continually seeks to improve the process and product of government decision-making. In 2015, Performance Management partnered with Stony Brook University to design and provide extensive training. The training was directed specifically to designated groupings of executives, project leaders and facilitators. Each played a direct role in fostering a culture of continual improvement whereby employees are equipped with the analytical tools and supportive culture of innovation and meaningful change. Criminal Justice and Public Safety: ChANGE Program

While ranked as one of the safest communities in the United States, is not immune to gang activity and youth violence. In an attempt to reach out to youth before they become involved in gang activity, Suffolk County’s Probation Department has developed a pilot program – Children All Need Good Experiences (ChANGE). The Program was developed in collaboration with S.T.R.O.N.G. Youth, Inc., a local not-for-profit gang prevention program, and two local school districts, to reduce the chances of gang involvement for elementary age children at risk of becoming involved in gang activities or who may already be involved in gang activities. Criminal Justice Medication Assisted Treatment Initiative: Piloting the long-acting opioid antagonist, Vivitrol In collaboration with the Suffolk County Executive’s Office, Criminal Justice Coordinating Council,

and Sheriff’s Office, the Department of Health Services developed and implemented a Vivitrol® program. The program identifies incarcerated individuals, and defendants who participate in court diversion pro-grams, who are in need of assistance with avoiding re-involvement with opioid use following release, providing them with education regarding treatment alternatives, and for patients expressing an interest, providing a referral for post-release treatment which includes on-going use of Vivitrol® as well as an ini-tial injection of Vivitrol® prior to their release. Sheriff’s Incarcerated Youth Initiative The Sheriff’s Incarcerated Youth Initiative was launched in September 2011 to promote the successful transition of incarcerated youth, between the ages of 16 to 21, from jail to community life and to reduce recidivism among

this group. Participants in the program are housed on a separate tier within the facility dedicated to this program and are monitored by the same group of correction officers. The program encourages effective and open communication among the youth and the officers assigned to the initiative, and the officers act in a mentoring capacity with the young inmates. Health: Real-time Arthropodborne Pathogen Targeted Operational Reporting System (RAPTORS) Suffolk County’s Arthropod-Borne Disease Laboratory (ABDL) conducts countywide arthropod-borne disease surveillance for West Nile Virus (WNV) and Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus (EEEV). The surveillance program generates data that needs to be organized, analyzed and shared with several other Suffolk County offices.

As of this writing, I have published 573 columns. During the course of those, it has often occurred to me that some – mainly those with more of a personal touch – would make a solid foundation for a mini-memoir of sorts, a highlight reel of those experiences which have shaped the last decade or so of my life. I recently took the time to scan through each one, briefly, with an eye on setting aside those which I felt were, at the very least, worth a second look. It’s amazing, when you read them one after another, how the narrative weaves together, providing a glimpse into whatever happened to be my thoughts at that particular moment in time. Sure, there were the fluffy, filler-type accounts of seasons changing and deadlines crunching, of miscellaneous

musings on life, and people; random rants and reader feedback. But among the hundreds were some solid accounts of current events, heartfelt profiles of loved ones, and momentous occasions in my life. And, of course, we can’t forget about Buddy’s 20 or so contributions to the cause, perhaps better suited for an illustrated children’s series in his own right. (We do know how he hates to share the spotlight.) This initial scan was just the first step; but, after two days of skimming, I had set aside close to one hundred of my favorites. Not a bad beginning. My hope, over time, is to provide the narration necessary to connect the dots, perhaps throw in some favorite quotations, photography to illustrate the progression… and see where it winds up.

It is, mostly, a project for me – a labor of love encompassing all those hobbies which I hold dear. Of course, if and when it all comes together, I would love to share it with my family and friends, and readers, if they would care to revisit this abridged anthology. In the interim, I welcome any feedback and suggestions those readers might care to offer – favorite columns, stories that stood out over the years, topics you would like to see covered in the coming weeks… anything at all. The RESTORE Grant will provide the resources for retraining individuals and upskilling to earn an associate’s degree and transfer to a baccalaureate program for expanded career options. Bootcamp training programs will be developed and students will prepare for online coursework while learning valuable industry and job readiness skills. McKay said the college envisions the RESTORE Grant providing training for about 350 students.

Creating A Personal Funeral Service - Part One

Although we are referred today as funeral directors, those individuals who direct funerals, we are also still referred to as “undertakers”. The term “undertaker” was derived from the concept that we “undertake” all that needs to be done for a funeral service. Whether we direct funerals or we undertake all the responsibilities for the funeral arrangements, we need your help in making the funeral a meaningful experience. Although we become an integral part of your family during the funeral process, we do not always know you or the deceased on a personal level when you first call us. Our purpose as funeral directors is not to take away your pain, because that is something we cannot do. You must work to make your life a little more bearable during this most difficult time. It has long been our philosophy, and we have stated it in this column numerous times, that FUNERALS ARE FOR THE LIVING. The deceased - as sick he or she was - has no more pain or suffering, but only peace. We the survivors, are left to grieve, mourn and cope with our severe loss. The funeral, whether it is a traditional full service funeral or a direct cremation or burial with a memorial service, should be a personal tribute to the life of the deceased which helps you remember the joy and comfort the deceased brought forth in this world to you and your family and friends. You may wish to formulate in your mind those aspects of your loved one which you would like to be remembered. You should think about what you would like written in the obituary. You may wish to discuss with us how we can help you remember your loved one by displaying pictures at the funeral home or during the memorial service.
