Older teens with AD/HD have a common set of challenges different from children and/or adults and their needs are unique and not always recognized. NEFCU, a leading Long Island credit union, awarded eight Long Island high school students with $1,000 scholarships to fund their higher education from the NEFCU Making A Difference Family Scholarship Program. These students were recognized for their exemplary academic achievements. Since the program‘s inception, NEFCU has awarded more than $1 million in scholarship funds. “We would like to congratulate this year’s scholarship winners,” said Valerie Garguilo, Vice President of Marketing & Community Relations at NEFCU. “Applicants were chosen based on their academic achievements and commitment to their communities. We wish them continued success as they move to the next level of their education. The recipients of this year’s award are:

· Thomas Bruno of Garden City who graduates from Chaminade and will attend the University of Notre Dame; · Grace Agoglia of Massapequa Park who graduates from Sacred Heart Academy and will also attend the University of Notre Dame; · Alexander Cavanagh of Westbury who graduates from Clarke High School and will attend Boston College; · Hiral Doshi of Dix Hills who graduates from Half Hollow Hills East and will attend Yale University; · Lambert Chu of Old Westbury who graduates from Wheatley School and will attend MIT; · Jake Liguori of Franklin Square who graduates from Chaminade and will also attend MIT; · Danielle Domani of Smithtown who graduates from Smithtown High School and will attend Wheaton College;

To receive the NEFCU Making A Difference Family Scholarship, applicants were asked to submit an official school transcript and a resume of high school and community service activities. Winners are eligible to win the NEFCU Making a Difference Premier Scholarship, where they have a chance to apply for an additional $20,000 scholarship, which would be paid over four years. “As we celebrate our 75th Anniversary this year, we are extremely proud to have awarded over 1 million dollars in scholarships for Long Island students” said Valerie Garguilo. “We understand the importance of education to our communities and we look forward to seeing these students succeed.”

Garden Demonstration The Long Island Chrysanthemum Society is proud to announce the creation of an Organic Chrysanthemum Demonstration Garden at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Nassau County’s East Meadow Farm. Every month from July to October, members of the Long Island Chrysanthemum Society under the direction of John Capobianco will demonstrate techniques appropriate for development of outstanding exhibition chrysanthemums. The general public is invited to attend and learn these techniques for creating the Queen of Fall Flowers. Dates and times will be posted on the LICS Website: www. longislandmums.org, or you can call 516.263.2717. In keeping with

Cornell’s agreement with Nassau County, the garden will use Organic Techniques. No synthetic fertilizers, insecticides or herbicides will be used. The garden will feature examples of both Spray and Disbud Exhibition Chrysanthemums from all 13 Bloom Classifications, and a few Garden Hardy types. The garden will feature an low pressure drip irrigation system, with automated feeding and watering. The first session will cover the installation of the drip irrigation system, planting and initial pinching. Mr. Capobianco served as President of the Long

Island Chrysanthemum Society, Inc., and is known for his work with Chrysanthemum Bonsai. He has received the NCS Gold Medal six times for his displays of chrysanthemum bonsai. He doesn’t have his wallet or identification (he left the wallet at home that morning), and his Red 2004 Pontiac GTO was abandoned at a train station - LIRR station in Deer Park, NY. He hasn’’t taken the train to work in 5-6 years, he drives. His phone last pinged several miles north west of that station at 1:45 pm and then went dead around 2:45pm. The keys were not left in the car, nor was his phone. He was seen at 2:15pm at Arrow Scrap Yard in West Babylon off Kean St. He may have a green mountain bike with him, this was determined to be missing from his home.

Goodbyes are never easy. In fact, they may be among the most difficult tasks we are forced to contend with in life, as we become so used to having those we love surround us, as a part of our world. And when they leave, well, that world comes crumbling down. My grandmother – my “Gramma” as I used to call her when I was a child – recently passed away after a long illness… making that particular parting all the more painful for me, and for our family. She was everything you imagine when you hear the word “grandmother” – a shining example of love and affection, beaming with pride and doting on all her children and grandchildren with the kind of compassion that made you feel, quite simply, very special. As a child, I remember countless afternoons spent at Grandma’s house… playing in the backyard on the swings, splashing around in my very own inﬂatable pool, running through the sprinkler, standing at my tiny lifelike kitchen set, pretending to cook those great gourmet meals I had so eagerly watched her create for the family time and time again… then there was movie time and watching Yankee games, all while snuggled up on the couch under one of her handmade crocheted blankets... and we can’t forget the sleepovers, those fun long weekends as a kid when you felt like you were away on the best vacation, a home away from home. So many memories, of holidays spent gathered

around the big dining room table, of “helping” Grandma bake her famous Christmas cookies (basically watching and waiting and then sneaking a couple as soon as they came out of the oven), of marveling at the gigantic Christmas tree and the beautiful decorations… of hoping that, one day, I would be lucky enough to have a house as beautiful and as full of love as Grandma and Grandpa’s. And lucky I was, to have two people who adored me and gave me everything a little girl could want growing up. But it wasn’t ever about the material possessions; it was about the intangibles, the traditions, all the special moments… priceless. There they were in the audience at every dance recital, beaming from the stands at my high school and college graduations… Prom pictures? Taken at Grandma and Grandpa’s house, complete with a hand-crocheted, maraboutrimmed cape to perfectly accent my prom gown. Birthdays? Always a part of the celebration, sometimes even including a homemade cake baked courtesy of – who else? There are very few constants in a child’s life, but for me, it was always Grandma and Grandpa. In 1997, we were blessed to celebrate the 50th anniversary of these two special people, to honor the love that had stood as a shining example of what “happily ever after” could mean… should mean. How lucky we all were to witness their renewal of vows, words which truly meant something, words lived by for 66 years, for better or worse, in sickness and in health.

Once in college, I enrolled in a Family Literacy class where one of our projects was to interview a family member, record and transcribe the conversation, and illustrate certain family traditions through words and photographs… my very own scrapbook of sorts. At the time, it seemed like just another grueling assignment, a major undertaking I wasn’t particularly keen on. I chose my grandmother, never foreseeing how meaningful that decision would become. Just a few weeks ago, following my grandmother’s passing, I dug out that cassette recording of our interview and eagerly listened to the hours of conversation, smiling as I recalled that day over ten years ago. Even more than the questions and answers and the information exchanged, there was the voice, the humor, the details, the love… it’s all there, forever preserved. How grateful I am for that class, for that project… for that precious memory. At a certain point, the song You Light Up My Life became something of our “thing,” that special bond between grandmother and grandchild, with those words surfacing in many cards exchanged throughout the years, as well as on a page of my yearbook – there, in black and white, as an everlasting reminder of our special bond. That connection, and all the memories that come with it, shall never be broken – not by illness, and not in death. Because, goodbyes, as they say, need not be final. Grandma, you will always light up my life… ‘Til we meet again.

Creating A Personal Funeral Service Part Four Throughout our lives whenever we or someone close to us has a major event, i.e. birth, first birthday, Holy Communion, Graduation, Bar Mitzvah, Wedding, 25th Anniversary, holidays, etc. to commemorate such events we celebrate with a ceremony. Some of the ceremonies are elaborate affairs that take months if not years to plan, some are simple family only affairs but there is always a ceremony. For some reason, many have come to think the death of an individual does not call for any ceremony to commemorate or celebrate the life of the deceased. All too often I hear people say, “I do not wish to be a burden or bother anyone just cremate me and spread my ashes in the ocean” or I hear the family come in and say “he was a simple person who did not want anything just a cremation and bury the ashes in the garden.” Although these procedures are expedient, in my opinion it is not the right thing to do for the survivors or the deceased. I am not saying that you must have a traditional funeral with a viewing and a funeral mass but I am saying some type of ceremony should take place to commemorate and celebrate the life of the deceased. I have assisted in wonderful ceremonies that took place in the individual’s home with a small gathering of friends to reminisce about the deceased. I have helped families coordinate funeral services and catering for over 300 people in attendance. I have also provided information for the family to do their own personal ceremony without anyone else present. The harsh truth is within three generations or less no one will remember any of us but we all should take at least a few moments out of our busy lives to remember those whom we loved and celebrated their lives. Riders will participate in the Long Island Bike Challenge (LIBC) on Sunday, August 4th, to support research conducted at The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research. Participants in the LIBC will ride 40, 62 or 100 miles, ending in East Hampton.
