n July 17th, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey joined hundreds of patriots from points near and far in the Town of Babylon’s Soldier Ride to support the Wounded Warrior Project. In addition to the Soldier Ride celebrating its 8th Anniversary, it also witnessed a 10% increase in rider participation. The event kicked off at the Town of Babylon Town Hall. Thanks to all those who participated in this cause.

BANKRUPTCY

At its July reorganization meeting, North Babylon School District’s new Superintendent of Schools Glen Eschbach was sworn in, and the Board of Education reappointed Janet Meyerson and Sal Levanti to their posts

as president and vice president, respectively. In addition, Matthew Lucchetti was introduced as a new trustee on the Board. Eschbach, Meyerson, Levanti and Lucchetti all took their oaths of office before a district attorney.

The meeting, a precursor to the 2015-2016 school year, served to welcome Eschbach as leader of its schools and gave the Board an opportunity to thank the community for its support as it reorganized.

Everyone you meet is ﬁghting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always. So the saying goes, and so the sentiment is reinforced every time news is received of the untimely passing of a loved one, friend, or even a celebrity or complete stranger. You just never know what goes on beneath the façade. Especially in this day and age of social media and what some might consider too much “sharing,” it is striking to note that the public profile rarely matches the internal struggle for many. As I write these words, many of my fellow classmates from the Lindy High Class of 2000 have gathered, yet again, to say goodbye to one of our own, gone too soon. Over the

last week, the outpouring of love and fond memories has been overwhelming, in the form of old photographs dug out from the archives, funny anecdotes shared and heartfelt remembrances penned of a person who, quite simply, had the ability to light up any gathering with his positive energy and smile. In this time of sadness and reﬂection, it has been said that the best thing anyone can do – the only thing, really – is to take that sentiment and use it to be more considerate of others, their feelings, their unknown struggles… to appreciate those around you and to savor the moments you are fortunate to share together, as you simply never know when those moments will become nothing more than a distant memory. In the years that have passed since high school graduation,

we have all gone our separate ways, some to explore the world, others to settle down with families and some to simply find themselves in the endless quest for happiness and fulfillment. Whatever the journey, those childhood and adolescent friendships that blossomed during our formative years have endured in one form or another – even if only to serve as the basis for those fond memories that shaped so many milestones along the way. And here we are, fifteen years later… a class whose roots remain firmly planted – on the playgrounds of our elementary schools, in the hallways of our high school, on the streets that we all called home at one time. Such a bond will never be broken. And at times likes these, it only grows stronger.

As the result of a grassroots effort led by North Babylon High School alumni Liana Neidig and Kristin Corragio, the school’s little theatre was dedicated to retired theatre teacher David Signorelli. A plaque commemorating the dedication was unveiled at a special ceremony attended by both former and current members of the Board of Education, including Bob Scheid, Barbara Leun, Barbara Ferguson, James Shinnick and Matthew Lucchetti. The program also featured the presentation of a film constructed by the alumni that celebrated the career of Mr. Signorelli, and a reception hosted by the Performing Arts Support Association (PASA) of North Babylon. Mr. Signorelli participated in a ribbon cutting that made the dedication official. Mr. Signorelli taught theatre in the district for

Throughout our lives whenever we or someone close to us has a major event, i.e. birth, first birthday, Holy Communion, Graduation, Bar Mitzvah, Wedding, 25th Anniversary, holidays, etc. to commemorate such events we celebrate with a ceremony. Some of the ceremonies are elaborate affairs that take months if not years to plan, some are simple family only affairs but there is always a ceremony. For some reason, many have come to think the death of an individual does not call for any ceremony to commemorate or celebrate the life of the deceased. All too often I hear people say “I do not wish to be a burden or bother anyone, just cremate me and spread my ashes in the ocean,” or I hear the family come in and say “he was a simple person who did not want anything, just a cremation and bury the ashes in the garden.” Although these procedures are expedient, in my opinion it is not the right thing to do for the survivors or the deceased. I am not saying that you must have a traditional funeral with a viewing and a funeral mass but I am saying some type of ceremony should take place to commemorate and celebrate the life of the deceased. I have assisted in wonderful ceremonies that took place in the individual’s home with a small gathering of friends to reminisce about the deceased. I have helped families coordinate funeral services and catering for over 300 people in attendance. I have also providied information for the family to do their own personal ceremony without anyone else present. The harsh truth is that within three generations or less no one will remember any of us, but we all should take at least a few moments out of our busy lives to remember those whom we loved and celebrate their lives.
