If you are a small rental property owner, you may still be eligible to receive federal assistance for storm-related repairs. The Rental Properties Program, under the auspices of the Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery’s (GOSR) NY Rising Program, is part of the State’s efforts to replenish housing stock and increase community storm resiliency in the wake of Superstorm Sandy, Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee. Owners of stormdamaged rental properties that are located in areas outside of New York City and that were being utilized by rental tenants for full-time, year-round use at the time of the storm(s) are eligible to apply. These include single-family homes, townhouses, apartment buildings or any other

legal dwelling. NY Rising funding may be used to finance repairs to real property or to reimburse for repairs to real property, excluding landscaping or any element that is not part of the building. Priority is given to properties that offer affordable units – serving renters with income levels that fall below 80 percent of the area’s median income (AMI), as well as properties that sustained storm damage that still needs to be repaired. For example, on Long Island, the AMI is $105,000 for a family of four in Nassau County. Property owners who have not started poststorm repairs are also given preference. The Blanket By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

I have a beach blanket; well, to be clear, it’s more of a moving blanket that has admirably served its purpose on the beach, the grass… pretty much anywhere it’s been needed over the last year and a half. Until last Monday. Last Monday, my friend and I decided to attend one of the many free summer concerts on the schedule this season at Massapequa’s John J. Burns Park. While the forecast called for rain and possible thunderstorms later in the evening, the concert remained set to go off. We arrived early, set up the aforementioned blanket and a couple of chairs, and waited. Light drizzle had begun to fall on and off at this point. Several local legislators appeared to make the

obligatory introductions on stage and stated that, due to the impending storms, the show would begin a bit earlier than scheduled. Perfect. Headliner Bret Michaels took the stage shortly after, and was greeted by an ecstatic crowd, most clutching their umbrellas in earnest, as the rain began to fall harder. About a half dozen songs in, the torrential downpour commenced. At that point, it became clear that, despite the best intentions, the show would simply not be able to go on. The house lights (or lampposts, as the case was) went up, the power to the jumbo screen was cut, and the crew desperately tried to cover the speakers and electronics as the mad dash to the parking lot began. Ah, but there still

remained the small matter of the blanket. The gigantic, now completely saturated, blanket, which now weighed approximately 50 lbs. as we attempted to roll it up and drag it to the parking lot – all the while trying to sidestep the massive mud puddles which had formed in a matter of minutes. As I contemplated chucking the entire thing into the nearest garbage pail, the absurdity of the whole scene suddenly struck me, and I became hysterical with laughter. “The next time they forecast ‘a chance’ of anything, let’s do ourselves a favor and leave the blanket in the trunk.” As I write this, four days later, the blanket remains draped over my deck, drying in the afternoon sun. It’s still a bit damp.

The “Friends Quilt” mimics the quilting technique of “binding pieces of fabric together” by joining all the individuals who are now part of our unbreakable patchwork of friends. Each of the sponsors who make a donation to this quilt see their names added year after year as a continuing pledge, not only to “grow” the quilt, but also to achieve the goal of making a difference in the lives of those who have given

way more than can ever be returned. The 2013 “Friends Quilt” raised $10,000, all of which was directly donated to Spectrum Designs at their office in Port Washington on October 19th, 2013. World-Class Pediatric and Fetal Cardiology Care Close to Home

Training in the Immediate Disaster Case Management Program (IDCM) was held last month at Family & Children’s Association, one of Long Island’s largest health and human service organizations, to prepare staff and individuals from partner agencies to become Case Managers and Case Supervisors. These case managers/supervisors will be able to quickly mobilize to offer assistance in the event a presidentiallydeclared disaster and/ or support is requested by the Governor. The

IDCM is a federally funded program administered by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in partnership with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Administration for Children and Families (ACF). Participating in the three-day training alongside Family & Children’s staff, were representatives from Hope Worldwide, the Arab American Family Support Center and several other

nonprofits. As part of the IDCM Team, Family & Children’s staff may be deployed for up to 14 days. According to Dr. Jeffrey L. Reynolds, President/CEO of Family & Children’s Association, “participation and leadership in the IDCM is in keeping with our mission is to protect and strengthen Long Island’s most vulnerable children, seniors and families. We’re here to serve Long Islanders in crisis whether it is financial, emotional or environmental.”

funeral rites as they relate to cremation.

There are two points on which I would like to focus in this article. The first is the adamant statement made by the Church that cremated remains of a deceased Catholic must be treated the same as the human body and that cremation is NOT the final disposition. Therefore, some final resting place for the Cremated Remains must be made. The scattering of ashes over land or sea is NOT an acceptable practice for deceased members of the Catholic Church nor is leaving them in the care of the funeral home nor is it acceptable to keep Cremated Remains at home on the mantle or in the garage. The Cremated Remains of a person should be interred in the ground or entombed in a niche (a mausoleum for cremated remains) in a suitable urn.

The second point on which I would like to focus is cremation does NOT mean there isn’t any wake or religious services prior to the cremation. It simply means that instead of burial or entombment in a mausoleum the deceased is cremated. But first you can have a wake if desired, religious services and a funeral mass before the cremation. While promoting the values that underlie the Church’s preference for burial of the body, the Church must exercise sensitive pastoral judgment concerning the choice that nearly 20 percent of Catholics are making in favor of cremation. Economic, geographic, ecological or family factors on occasion make cremation the only feasible choice.

Raising Funds For Camp On July 13th, Liz Holzknecht, a Mineola resident, presented a check in the amount of $3,500 to Bridget Costello, Director, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck. Ms. Holzknecht participated in the Runner’s World Heartbreak Hill Half Marathon in Boston on June 8th as a way to raise funds and awareness for the camp. Ms. Holzknecht and her family have a special connection to Camp PaQua-Tuck. Her sister Kate attended the camp’s respite

weekends and summer sessions for eight years. On September 2013, Kate passed away at the age of 23. The camp held a special memorial ceremony in her honor and, on March 28th, the Moriches Paquatuck Squaws held the Spring Fling Joy Prom in her honor. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp serving children and young adults ages 6-21 with both physical and developmental special needs. Its mission is to help
