Collecting thousands of used crayons, the students got involved in a community service through the “Crazy Crayons Project,” which has made it possible to stop 105,000 pounds of unwanted crayons from going into landfills with help from the schools.

Veterans Salute Gala Continued From 4 Brokerage on Long Island and Queens. Ms. Laura Rittenberg, president will accept the award on behalf of the sales associates and employees. Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage enjoys a long-standing and accomplished volunteer association with Beacon House and its mission of service to Long Island’s homeless veterans and their families. This past spring, over 125 volunteer sales associates from offices across Long Island and Queens formed teams that spread across Beacon House’s housing sites and performed intensive house cleanups at seven sites for Coldwell Banker Annual Volunteer Day. Many of Coldwell Banker’s affiliated sales associates continue their relationship with the
residence by providing holiday gifts and home cooked meals. This project is being followed by the commitment with an island-wide Hometown Heroes Linen Drive to collect 700 sets of new linens and bedding for homeless veterans living in Beacon House’s 34 sites. The Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage regional offices are the collection centers. The Moriches Bay Project held their 2nd annual Oyster Fling in Westhampton Beach, where more than 300 guests enjoyed New Orleans themed fare prepared by Buoy One of Westhampton, Jazz music by Gotham Easy. They also participated a unique, hands-on experience by “flinging” oysters into the Bay that will directly help clean the water and further the Project’s mission. Special guests included
Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine and Congressional Candidate Anne ThroneHolst who all were very excited to get their gloves on and participate in the fling. Proceeds from the Oyster Fling will support Moriches Bay Project and allow the Project to continue to improve water quality in Long Island’s bays through oyster farming and eelgrass planting.

The Babylon School District appointed Travis Davey as the new principal of Babylon Elementary School, effective July 1st, 2016. Mr. Davey comes to the district from the South Country Central School District, where he served as principal since 2010. For the last two years, he worked as principal of Bellport Middle School and, prior to that, he served as principal of Brookhaven Elementary School. During his time in South Country, Mr. Davey oversaw the implementation of such programs as the Lucy Calkins Reading and Writing Units of Study and the introduction of evidence-based socialemotional curriculum
and mindfulness training. Furthermore, he worked to strengthen the hometo-school partnership through such initiatives as the Shared Decision Making Team and by creating end-of-unit writing celebrations in classrooms throughout the elementary school. Prior to his work in South Country, Mr. Davey worked as the assistant principal at St. Michael the Archangel School, located in Raleigh, North Carolina. Here he oversaw a student population spanning preschool to eighth grade and was an integral part of the building earning the National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Award in 2010. Throughout his career, Mr. Davey has been awarded a number of professional accolades, including a Regional Excellence in Teaching Award and being nominated for Administrator of the Year by the Empire State School Administrators Association for three consecutive years. He holds two master’s degrees from the
University of Notre Dame – a Master of Arts in Education in Elementary Education and a Master of Arts in Educational Administration. He also earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Notre Dame in 2001. Aside from being an accomplished educator, Mr. Davey prides himself in being a devoted family man to his wife and four children. EAGLE SCOUT HONORED - Deer Park resident Thomas Sandoval, of Troop 86, was honored at the Deer Park Firehouse, on June 5th, for his attainment of the rank of Eagle Scout. Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer and Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez presented Thomas with a proclamation, stating that the day of June 6th will be known as “Eagle Scout Thomas Sandoval Day” in the Town of Babylon. Thomas constructed two benches for the playground at Ascension Lutheran Church for his Eagle Scout Service Project. This was the culmination of twelve years of hard work and commitment to his community.
