The Days You Remember By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

There’s something to be said for nostalgia, even the not-so-distant-past variety. I have a hard time viewing cultural happenings, music and movies from the 90’s as “classic” - however, when you realize that some of these momentous occasions are approaching their 15 and 20year anniversaries, well that gives things a whole new perspective. Recently, the National Geographic channel premiered a new miniseries focusing on this particular decade, causing many from my generation to take a step back and realize that some of those things that seemed like “just yesterday” in fact

occurred many yesterdays ago. Perhaps part of the reason behind this time lapse of sorts is the fact that many of my fellow late 20-somethings and early 30-somethings still live at home, in the same town in which they attended high school and football games, local bars and beaches, and continue to socialize with the same circle of close knit friends from their school days. Essentially, not much has changed – so it seems positively mind-blowing to think that nearly two decades have elapsed. Ah, but they have. And none of us is getting any younger in the process. A sobering thought, isn’t it? Of course, in reality,

much has changed. The world as a whole, to start, straight on down to the local neighborhood streets we used to casually stroll along. To think that reunions have come and gone, friends have married (and, in some cases divorced), and are in the process of raising children and buying homes of their own – “growing up,” as they say – well, it had to happen eventually. Personally, I enjoy a good trip down memory lane as much as the next person. It’s fun to reflect upon the people who have graced our lives, the person you were and the one you still hope to become. Nostalgia or no, there’s still plenty of time to rewrite the story along the way!

Savvy Senior Days Get a jumpstart this summer on election season by voting for your favorite Savvy Senior! The Association of Generational Experts for Seniors (AGES) is accepting nominations for “Savvy Senior” citizens, now through Sunday, August 31st. Each senior submitted will be considered a candidate for 2014’s Savvy Senior King and Queen, who will be announced and crowned at AGES’ Fifth Annual Savvy Senior Day on Grandparents Day Sunday, September 7th, at the Parker Jewish Institute in New Hyde Park, NY from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Participating in the coronation of this year’s Savvy Senior King and Queen will be last year’s King, Frank Zizzo of Levittown, and last year’s Queen, Rose Laccone of Whitestone. All nominated

seniors will be publicly recognized, with this year’s King and Queen receiving gift certificates toward professional studio portraits, compliments of Bradford Renaissance Portraits. Live music will be provided throughout the event by the five piece band Pazazz. “Long Island is made up of so many wonderful seniors who have not only made but continue to make tremendous impact within our communities,” says Kevin Lawrence, AGES Chairman. “It is so rewarding to see Savvy Senior Day entering its fifth year and it having become such a highly anticipated annual tradition for so many Long Island families. Responding to an increased demand to supply supplemental food to children who rely on school lunch programs, but may not get enough to eat when school is in summer recess, Island Harvest Food Bank today announced that it has expanded its Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) to 50 sites across Long Island. Last year the SFSP served 38,500 meals to 2,215 children through 28 sites in Nassau and Suffolk counties. This year, more than 75,000 meals are expected to be served to approximately 3,500 children participating in the program. “Summertime should be a carefree, fun and relaxing time for all children,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO, Island Harvest. “Sadly, for many children who rely on school lunch programs, the summer can cause worry, stress and empty stomachs.” According to Feeding America, the nation’s leading domestic hunger-relief organization, 62 percent of client households with children under the age of 18 reported participating in the National School

The North Babylon High School Class of 2014 gathered together one final time on June 28th to celebrate the school’s annual commencement exercises. Members of the Board of Education, administration, teachers, special guests, parents and friends surrounded the students as they prepared to collect their high school diplomas and move their tassels from left to right. Leading up to the final moments of their North Babylon educational careers, the students listened as they received words of advice from special guest Suffolk County Supervisor and North Babylon alumnus Steve Bellone, Superintendent of Schools Patricia E. Godek, Principal Jonathan Klomp and faculty speaker David Signorelli. The students also reflected on shared memories and rejoiced on the years to come as valedictorian Marco Rosero, salutatorian Kevin

Leondardo and senior class co-presidents Casey Culkin and Emily Garren delivered their farewell addresses. “This graduation is an important milestone, but just one of many that will be available to you as a result of the education you’ve been provided by the wonderful teachers, administrator and support staff within the North Babylon School District,” said Mr. Klomp. “It is my sincere hope that as you leave us, you remember the lessons learned here at North Babylon High School. As West Babylon’s graduating Class of 2014 processed onto the field of the West Babylon Junior High School for the annual commencement exercises, they were serenaded by the ceremonial “Pomp and Circumstance,” as performed by the high school band, and cheered on by proud family members and friends. The exercises began with a greeting from Principal Dr. Ellice F. Vassallo, the Pledge of Allegiance led by National Honor Society President Alexandra Martocci, and performances of the national anthem and “God Bless America” by the band. In his opening remarks, Class of 2014 President John Modica encouraged his peers to never give up on themselves and to have confidence in their choices. “When you give up on yourself, you give up on all those who have supported you,” he said.

Salutatorian Julie Barrett defined the Class of 2014 as “remarkable for [its] differences and dedication” and encouraged her peers to keep laughter in their lives. Valedictorian Nicole Cutrone encouraged her peers to pursue something they love and remarked that her classmates’ experiences had been defined through the “many magical moments” they had experienced in high school that had helped them succeed. Superintendent of Schools Anthony Cacciola thanked the class for bringing pride to both the district and their parents. He encouraged the graduates to put life into perspective and appreciate what is truly important. “Life is measured by the moments that take your breath away,” he said. Board of Education President Diane Thiel noted that the visiting class of 1964 and the graduating

Although cremation is now permitted, it does not enjoy the same value as the burial of the body. The Catholic Church strongly prefers that the body of the decease be present for its funeral rites since the presence of the body most clearly brings to mind the life and death of the person. Therefore, the recommendation of the Bishop’s Committee recommends that cremation takes place following the funeral liturgy.

“The cremation remains of the body should be treated with the same respect given to the human body from which they came.” This includes a worthy vessel to contain the ashes, the matter in which they are carried, the care and attention to appropriate placement and transport and the final disposition. Cremation is not the final disposition of the deceased. The Church plainly states cremated remains should be buried in a grave or entombed in a mausoleum or columbarium. The practice of scattering cremated remains on the sea-from the air or on the ground or keeping cremated remains in the home of a relative or friend of the deceased are not the reverent disposition the church requires. Great Britain, Currie-Bell came to America in 1929 and settled in Southold, from where he traveled up and down the east coast, painting portraits and local scenery. His wife, Ann Hallock Currie-Bell, was the founder and first president of the Southold Historical Society, where a number of his paintings can be viewed. Artists from all over the east end of Long Island were invited to participate in the exhibition, as long as they either ‘resided on’ or ‘worked on’ the North Fork. Entries will be scrutinized by the two jurors; Sean Cleary, Chief Operating Officer of the well-respected Phillips Auction House of New York City; and Geoffrey K. Fleming, Director of the Southold Historical Society and author of several books and catalogs on the history and art of Long Island. Out of the submissions,

for Habitat projects. This spring, Bonide donated a portion of the proceeds of their lawn fertilizer sales sold in Costello’s Ace Hardware’s 21 stores. The ReStore and Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk thanks Costello’s Ace Hardware and Bonide for their support, and hopes that other businesses follow their lead in promoting the affordable home building programs on Long Island.
