Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer and members of the Town Board welcomed representatives from the nonprofit organization First Company Pink to the July 6th Babylon Town Board Meeting. First Company Pink, which raises funds to support breast cancer research, recently launched a program called “Got Checked?” to raise breast health awareness for girls and women at a younger age. The purpose of the “Got Checked?” slogan is to have the government recognize breast cancer awareness as a year-round campaign. First Company Pink will

be joining forces with the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition here in the Town of Babylon to promote their important cause. At the Board Meeting, Supervisor Schaffer and the Town Board passed Resolution No. 509, officially proclaiming July 6th, 2016 as “Got Checked?” day in the Town of Babylon. In addition, Donna Cioffi, who founded First Company Pink in 2010 following her own personal battle with breast cancer, was presented with an official Town of Babylon proclamation to honor her continued effort to eradicate breast cancer in this lifetime.

True Colors What would you do if no one was watching? What would you say if no one was listening? These little nuances are what can be designated as one’s “true colors,” those qualities we may take pains to hide from others on a daily basis, but that, when faced with circumstances beyond our control, shine through. This isn’t to say that they are automatically negative, or even need to be hidden. They are simply part of the layers which make up our individual personalities, which cause us to react in certain ways to situations in our own unique style. To each his or her own,

Think before you speak, pause before you act; it is always more advisable to attempt to diffuse a situation rather than add fuel to the fire. Especially with the current state of affairs in this nation, more care needs to be taken to respect one another, to pause a moment and appreciate the fact that, no matter the differences in our political, religious or societal views, we are all cut from the same cloth – and a little thing called humanity goes a long way. Whether engaging face to face, via text message or some other written method designed to foster

miscommunication, or – best of all – on the pages of various social media sites which seem to double as a breeding ground for contentious exchanges between so-called “friends,” common courtesy should not be dispensed with. So, take heed the next time someone is looking to engage. Draw in a deep breath, form a coherent thought, give it a second… and decide whether expressing your opinion is worth the potential repercussions. Sometimes, those true colors are not so black and white as we may think. Remember, when you mix all the colors of the rainbow together, you are left with a gray, muddled mess.

through the “Crazy Crayons Project,” which has made it possible to stop 105,000 pounds of unwanted crayons from going into landfills with the help from schools, organization educators and kids across this country. This national crayon recycling program is simple and brilliant. Students collect unwanted crayons, used, broken, unpopular colors. They then have a fun time sorting, counting and boxing them up and

shipping them to Crazy Crayons, where they are melted down and made into new crayons. These new crayons are sent to hospitals, orphanages and inner city schools. The students found this to be a great interactive learning experience and it was a perfect way for our youngest students to have a way to give back to others.

Good Samaritan Hospital recognized its Junior Volunteer Scholarship Winners with a reception on June 14th, in the St. Agatha Conference Room in an event that included the Guild Executive Board members, Standing Committee members, members at large and department staff that benefitted from the services of the winning junior volunteers. Winners included: Jacob Cordero from West Babylon who donated nearly 200

hours in Concierge/ Transport and participated in Blood Drives, events and thrift shop projects. Jacob will study bio-chemistry at Delhi University in the fall. Caelyn Reilly from Bay Shore High School donated nearly 180 hours in the Gift Shop, Pediatrics and special projects. Caelyn will study at Johns Hopkins and aspires to be a physician. Meaghan Weihs from West Islip High School donated nearly 150 hours in the Ambulatory Surgery

Department and helped with special projects. Meaghan is going into the nursing program at Farmingdale State University. The three graduating Junior Volunteers each received $1,500 scholarships for their work at Good Samaritan. Scholarships are fully funded through donation boxes located in the hospital’s gift shop, thrift shop, coffee shop and employee cafeteria.

One of the benefits of being a funeral director is that I get to listen to many learned clergymen. I would like to share with you part of a eulogy recently presented by an insightful clergyman. The eulogy started out the same as many eulogies I had heard before. The deceased was praised for all the good he had done in this world. The immediate family and friends were assured the deceased was in a better place now void of suffering and filled with joy. Then he spoke of the relationship the deceased had with his family and friends. He said although your loved one’s life has ended, your relationship with him will never end. He will always love you and you will always love him. His relationship with you is like a stone thrown in a quiet ocean. We never know on what shore the ripples will land and what effect they will have on that shore. Like your relationship with the deceased, you never really know how great of an effect the deceased has had not only on you but on your children and your children’s children. The clergyman went on to say that you should continue to think of the deceased as a source of comfort, joy, strength, wisdom and love. Because just as if a person would move to a new town to prepare a home for his family to come, you would continue to think of him as being with you. The deceased has simply gone to a new home and is awaiting your arrival. Although the deceased has died, his thoughts, love and your relationship with him will live with you forever. The clergyman concluded by saying all people and all relationships affect our lives forever and never end. Just as the stones thrown in the ocean affect the ocean, some relationships greatly affect us, some only to a minimal amount, but they all affect us and all relationships stay with us forever and affect our daily lives every day.
