MASSAPEQUA Day. In the early hours of May 30th, the North Babylon Fire Company was alerted to a structure fire on Scott Avenue off of Deer Park Avenue. On arrival, North Babylon Fire Company assessed the scene and checked for occupants, located the fire and extinguished the blaze. During the investigation by North Babylon, it was learned that if not for the heroic actions of a young man residing at

the location, this incident may have ended with a significant loss of life. Dominic Cappellino a 12 year-old boy, alerted his family to the fire as a result of the smoke detector. Dominic woke the entire family, made sure of their exit and removed the family pets as well. It is believed that had he not taken these actions the seven children, two adults and several family pets would not be alive today.

The high-ranking senior has demonstrated an impressive ability to balance his academics with a variety of school and community activities. A National AP Scholar and member of both the National Honor Society and Tri-M Music Honor Society, Brian is no stranger to hard work and determination. A
passionate musician, he has performed with the SCMEA choir and Sing Out Loud select choir, as well as in the school musicals every year. He also manages to find the time to participate in school activities, serving as a member of the Mock Trial and Quiz Bowl teams, Math Club, Science Olympiads and golf team. A man of many interests, Brian will be studying chemical engineering at the University of Delaware in the fall. “As a child, my grandfather instilled a great sense of academic spirit in me,” he said. “I try to honor that spirit daily. Chemistry is a field that I believe is going to be pivotal in the future of the country, and I would like to contribute in a way that is higher than myself.”

Summer “To Do” List By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I remember the moment like it was yesterday. Among the sea of caps and gowns, over the illustrious strains of Pomp & Circumstance… there he was, James Gandolfini, sitting one row behind my family at my college graduation. I could hear the buzz building behind me, as people started to notice. Why is he here? Is he speaking? Does he know someone who’s graduating? The fact that a celebrity was sitting among us was clearly the highlight for the thousand or so graduates on that day, some nine years ago, on the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University. I remember being very aware of his presence, as every time I glanced over my shoulder at my own little cheering section… there he was. When I walked up to receive my “unofficial” diploma (the real
one would arrive several weeks later), I carried a small index card with my name written on it to hand to the Dean. “Jamie Lynn Ryan” they announced. As I looked up at the sea of faces, my eye once again fell on Mr. Tony Soprano himself, only this time, he was looking right back at me. And with a big grin and a wink, he began applauding. I couldn’t believe it. I found myself glancing over both shoulders to see if the acknowledgement was meant for someone else, but there was no one there. As I walked back to my seat with a giant, silly smile on my face, I began quietly counting down the seconds until I could run and tell my family what had just happened. He smiled at me. He winked. He clapped. For me. What a doll. Following the ceremony, we all realized that he was indeed there for someone, his own niece, who we had apparently been attending school with for the last four years.

Who knew! And once I was able to meet up with my family, my brother revealed that he had gotten to the graduation tent a little early to reserve a row of seats, only to find Mr. Gandolfini sitting there already. Reluctant to disturb him at that point, they exchanged a slight greeting. Now, as the crowd began to disperse, people began tentatively approaching him to shake hands, ask for an autograph, maybe a photo… Me, I didn’t want to bother him. Ironically, that very occasion came up this past Father’s Day, as my brother and I reminisced over how we should have stopped to talk to him… and then came the tragic news just three days later. What a shame. I didn’t have the honor of truly knowing Mr. Gandolfini, but his presence surely touched me on one of the most memorable days of my life. May he Rest In Peace.

She works at the Town of Babylon Department of Environmental Control as an environmental intern, is the student editor for the “Save the Beaches” newsletter and volunteers to help preserve the barrier beaches of Long Island. She competes on the varsity lacrosse, varsity cross-country and varsity track and field teams; serves as secretary of DECA, secretary of the Leo Club and captain of the Math Club and Science Club; and is a member of the National Spanish Honor Society, National Business Honor Society, Tri-M National Honor Society, Student Council and Class Cabinet. She has won numerous awards through NYSSMA, SCMEA and DECA, and is also an AP Scholar and Dartmouth Book Award winner. After graduating with a weighted GPA of 103.67, she will attend Worcester Polytechnic Institute and major in biomedical engineering. Kerry, one of Babylon’s most versatile and naturally talented athletes, is captain of the varsity field hockey, varsity lacrosse and varsity winter track teams.
