Culinary Lessons

abylon High School 9th through 12th grade Culinary Foods classes recently had the chance to learn about the art of food preparation from an expert who works with the largest network of culinary schools in North America. Rick Fine, a culinary specialist and the associate director of high school programs for the International Culinary Schools at the Art Institute, visited the classes this spring to speak with the students.

After hearing the inspirational Chris Pendergast speak about the disease that has changed his life, students enrolled in Babylon Junior-Senior High School’s child psychology class quickly rallied their peers and joined the fight against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis by showing an overwhelming support for this year’s Ride for Life. Ride for Life Inc. is an organization founded in 1998 by Mr. Pendergast along with other ALS patients. The group’s mission is to raise public awareness of ALS, help researchers find a cure, support ALS patients and their families, and provide the ALS community with the latest ALS-

related news, information and inspiration. The organization’s annual ride is an event where ALS patients ride their power wheelchairs along the highways across Long Island to Manhattan. With the help of their teacher Lisa Brush, the school’s students coordinated fundraisers to raise funds for this worthy cause, which when combined with the donation collected during the faculty- and stafforganized “Dress Down Day,” totaled more than $600. To show their appreciation for the school’s support, Mr. Pendergast and the rest of the Ride for Life

Continued From 3 participants rode past Babylon Junior-Senior High School during this year’s annual ride. Lining the streets around the high school, students and faculty members cheered on the riders and showed support for their mission by holding colorful signs filled with inspirational messages. As the riders approached the high school, music teacher Charles Leech played the drums with students Jimmy Navarra and Sean Reis, and technology teacher Peter Manke’s Digital Video Editing class captured the momentous event. A group of 30 seniors from Ms. Brush’s child psychology classes, along with their teacher and Principal Al Cirone, walked with the ride and escorted Mr. Pendergast through the village and into Argyle Park, all while chanting to raise awareness.

The Jimmy Fund/Variety Children’s Charities Theatre Collections Program is the Jimmy Fund’s oldest annual fundraising effort. Over the past 64 years, the Jimmy Fund/Variety Children’s Charities Theatre Collections program has raised $29,000,000 for Dana-Farber. In its early years, the Theatre Program attracted the support of such stars as Jimmy Cagney, Loretta Young, Bing Crosby, and baseball legend Ted Williams. Volunteers are needed to help collect contributions for the Jimmy Fund. Volunteers receive T-shirts and possible other gifts like movie tickets, upcycled bags, or the chance to win Red Sox game tickets, depending on the time they commit to the program. Friday, June 7th kicks off the 64th year of The Jimmy Fund/Variety Children’s Charities Theatre Collections Program. Movie lovers with big hearts and a few spare hours will head to local theatres to help benefit adult and pediatric cancer research and care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Since 1949, volunteers have been passing collection canisters after the showing of a movie “trailer” about the Jimmy Fund at participating movie theaters. The program runs Tuesdays and Thursdays (evenings only), and Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays (days and evenings) from June 7th to July 25th at participating National Amusements movie theaters in several states including Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey. This year there are two new theatres participating in Massachusetts, the Somerville Theatre in Somerville and the Capitol Theatre in Arlington.

From The Battlefield To Babylon As an extension of their classroom lessons, fifth-graders at Babylon Memorial Grade School had the chance to experience the Civil War in a tangible way when members of the 14th Brooklyn Company E visited to conduct a living history encampment program called “The RedLegged Devils.” During the event, the students rotated through a series of stations filled with museum-quality historic reproductions and artifacts to learn about the militia’s efforts during the Civil War. From the significance of the number of buttons found on their uniforms to the proper way to salute during a wartime drill or ceremony, the students learned a number of interesting facts about the weapons used during the Civil War, the roles

of women and children during that time, and the life of the soldiers. Crossing curricular areas, in addition to the workshops with the militia representatives, the students have been working on a number of literacy- and technologybased projects. Several classes created historical fiction books while others crafted non-fiction pieces. With the help of school librarian, Amy Csorny, the students in Rayna Zwerlein’s class are creating a technology piece called Educreations. The new provisions will strengthen state efforts to crackdown on texting while driving, and other cell phone use while driving. It will target frequent offenders with harsher penalties for repeat violations. Police have issued 26,000 texting while driving violations. Two students from West Babylon Junior High School in the West Babylon Union Free School District won awards in the second annual Young Illustrators Challenge, for which they were recently honored

at a reception at Harbor Country Day School. The competition and exhibition were created to challenge and inspire young artists in Suffolk County. The theme of the challenge was “Journey.”.

Stephanie Gress, a curator and art historian at the Vanderbilt Museum, and Lois Reboli, an artist and educator, carried out the judging for the competition. They selected the works of Christina Capobianco (second place, grade 6-8 category) and Ivy Greco (third place, grade 6-8 category) for recognition. “Congratulations to the winners and all of the students who participated,” said studio art teacher Jennifer Tomeo. “We are very proud of these exceptional young artists.”

Summer “To Do” List By: Jamie Lynn Ryan So Summer is officially here… now what? Well, for me, in addition to all the normal seasonal stuff most of us look forward to, I am eagerly anticipating catching up on some quality TV time. Rerun Season, as I like to refer to it, is prime time to make use of that “On Demand” feature and settle in for some marathon viewing sessions, don’t you think? Remember all those cable TV series your friends keep talking about that you’ve never had the chance to check out? Well, plop down on the couch, put your feet up and start with Episode I, Season I. Watch a few episodes a night, every night, and you’ll be all caught up before you know it.

Oh, and let’s not forget about that pile of magazines from those subscriptions you just can’t bear to cancel. How many of you have accumulated quite the collection? What’s that, a Winter Music Preview on the cover? Only slightly outdated… take that cup of tea outside and start turning those pages. If you’re feeling especially ambitious, you can always attempt to crack open an actual book, too. I know, I know, such a thing is foreign to most people in this day and age. But remember how much you used to love it? How easy it was to become engrossed in chapter after chapter of a good novel to the point that you never wanted to put it down? Well, summer is the perfect opportunity to rediscover that passion.

Of course, beautiful beach weather always beckons, but the good part is that books and magazines travel easily enough. And with the technology of today, so can TV shows, actually. Take your tablet along for the ride, stick your toes in the sand, and insert a beach chair in place of that couch. You’re all set! Just think, an entire month to reintegrate yourself into the culture that you’ve been missing out on these last few months (or years, as the case may be). Time to do something for yourself, wouldn’t you say? Don’t worry, you’ll still have plenty of time to anguish over all the normal daily obligations. But that “you” time… that’s something you can never get back. Priceless.
