St. John the Baptist Junior, Cindy McCabe, claimed the Grand Prize in the Gilda’s Club It’s Always Something Teen Essay Contest with her piece entitled “Pancreatic Cancer.” The contest is open to any high school student in New York City or on Long Island and is held in memoriam of the late Gilda Radner. Ms. Radner was one of the great comedic minds of the 20th century who died at the young age of 42 after a lengthy bout with ovarian cancer. The essay itself must explain how cancer has touched the student’s life. Cindy’s work was selected as the Grand Prize winner out of the hundreds of students who submitted essays. Principal Nan Doherty stated, “Gilda Radner lives on in so many unique ways and funny memories. So it is wonderful for Cindy’s essay to be selected and celebrated by Gilda’s Club who recognizes teenage writers in this way.”

This past Memorial Day weekend, the Navy’s Blue Angels returned to the Island for their annual turn as one of the Jones Beach Air Show’s featured attractions. Even though it’s just a short drive down Ocean Parkway, my family and I have never managed to get out there to witness the spectacle up close and in person. Too much traffic, too many people, too much of a hassle… This year, though, I realized that the planes would be practicing right around the corner at Republic Airport during the week leading up to the show. And so, on Friday afternoon, a friend and I made a point of taking a ride down to the Airport Plaza shopping center to see if we could catch a glimpse. A glimpse? Try witnessing all six of the planes whizzing overhead and whoknows-what speed, close enough so that we could read the numbers on them! What a sight!

If only I had my camera, I thought. Well, after that close call, I decided to make it my mission to get a shot of them flying to or from the air show over the weekend, since I knew they would cross over my house on their flight down to the beach. Saturday afternoon, as I heard them approach, I ran out with my camera – only to catch the cloud of dust they had left in their wake. Okay, I thought, I’ll just wait here on the deck – listening to the simulcast on the radio – until I hear them wrapping up their routine. Then, all I have to do is aim my camera for the sky and I can’t miss them! Easier said than done. I saw them coming, all right. The problem was it’s a little hard to frame something moving at hundreds of miles an hour in your camera lens before it’s passed you by. I managed to snap one shot as they approached, which, after the camera’s natural delay, resulted in a rather fuzzy shot of the planes whizzing right out of the frame. There’s always tomorrow, I thought. The next morning, I drove

down to the local town beach and waited, poised for the approach. Sure enough, I saw the HC-130 slowly making its way south, a sure sign that the six Blue Angels were not far behind. And then… out of the clouds they came – all six, flying in perfect formation. And again, I was only able to get just one shot before I lost track of the formation. I followed their flight into the distance, where I was actually able to view most of the theatrics which followed, albeit from a great distance. I imagine it was much better up close, but hey – not a bad seat on my beach either! I must have stood there for a solid 30 minutes, watching the back and forth, up and down, looping motion of the jets, until at last, they began their return trip to Republic. This time, I got it. One...two… three shots as they came closer and closer – still a little blurred, but sharp against the clear blue sky. Finally! They then engaged in conversation about Mr. O’Brien’s inspiring ascent to president of SFCU, and they learned that they, too, are capable of an equally remarkable rise to success. Fifth-graders at Belmont Elementary School in the North Babylon School District are becoming dignified ladies and gentlemen by participating in the Dancing Classrooms: Transforming Lives One Step at a Time program. Over the course of 10 weeks and 20 lessons, the students are taking part in interactive lessons about the history and

cultures of the merengue, foxtrot, rumba, tango, swing and waltz. On the 20th lesson, students will dress elegantly to present a culmination of all they have learned in a ballroom performance. The program, hosted by affiliate organization CoDanceCo, home of Dancing Classrooms Long Island, is led in collaboration with students’ teachers and an

instructor from the dance group. By learning about the origins and proper application of steps in each dance, students are fostering the virtues of respect, teamwork, confidence and politeness. These lessons are serving to maximize their potential on the dance floor as well as in life.

Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Receiver of Taxes Corinne DiSomma, New York State Senator Phil Boyle, and Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey to rededicate the Anthony Sanchez Memorial Park in honor of the New York City police officer who was killed in the line of duty 19 years ago. The rededication ceremony for Sanchez, a West Babylon resident, was held on the 19th Anniversary of his killing on May 19th, 1997. That same year, Supervisor Schaffer renamed the park and pool facility on Sawyer

Avenue in West Babylon “PO Anthony Sanchez Memorial Park & Pool.” Sanchez was considered a standout officer at the 13th Precinct, where he worked for 10 years with partner Detective Roy Ruland. He was awarded 15 medals throughout his career. Many upgrades to the park have occurred throughout the years, including a new playground surface and a landscape enhancement project at the front of the pool building. The refurbished sign commemorating Officer Sanchez was moved to street level and is housed in a natural stone wall area surrounded by beautiful

BROTHER EAGLES HONORED - Assemblyman Joseph Saladino recently honored two brothers, Joseph and Joshua Reggi of Troop 183 in West Babylon, who achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest honor a scout can earn. The brothers built and perennials, shrubs, and installed 12 birdhouses at Fireman’s Park in Lindenhurst, cleaned the grounds around colorful annuals. Patrick Lynch, head of the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association of the City of New York, also addressed those gathered in Anthony’s honor.

TOWN OF BABYLON HOME DOWN PAYMENT ASSISTANCE PROGRAM FOR FIRST TIME HOMEBUYERS NOTICE OF APPLICATION AVAILABILITY AND INTAKE As part of an ongoing commitment to help make the "American Dream" of home ownership a reality for first time homebuyers who wish to reside in Town of Babylon, Supervisor, Rich Schaffer announced that the Long Island Housing Partnership (LIHP), as agent for Town of Babylon, will be making applications available for first time homebuyers for down payment/ closing cost assistance towards the purchase of a principal residence. The Town of Babylon will provide eligible first time homebuyers with up to $14,000 towards down payment/closing costs towards the purchase of an eligible new or existing singlefamily home, provided that the applicant puts a minimum down payment of at least $3,000. The applicant must also be able to satisfy the mortgage lender’s minimum down payment requirements and be able to secure a mortgage. Homeowners are required to reside in the home for a minimum of 5 years or HUD will require a full repayment of the grant.

Flag Day is June 14th. A time to display and honor our Flag. With this in mind, I thought I would provide you with information about the use of the United States Flag during a funeral service. The following regulation is taken from the National Flag Foundation, the authoritative body for honoring, caring and displaying the American Flag: “The ceremony of draping the casket with a United States Flag is used to honor veterans, “patriotic citizens”. Upon further investigation I have learned that this has come to mean every citizen of the United States has the right to have his or her casket draped with the United States Flag. Thus firemen, policemen and everyday citizens who were not veterans may opt to have their casket flag draped. However, the family of the deceased who were not veterans must provide the flag and it must measure 9.5 feet by 5 feet. For veterans who have been honorably discharged from the military, the flag is provided by the Veterans Administration and secured by the funeral director. However, the family must be able to provide a copy of the veteran’s discharge papers for proof of service. This being done, and whenever possible, a military honor guard will be present at the committal service of the veteran to present the flag to the next of kin of the deceased. The rules for use of the flag during the wake and funeral service are as follows: 1. If the casket is closed, the entire casket maybe draped with the flag. 2. If the casket is half open, the foot end of the casket maybe draped with a properly folded flag. 3. If the family does not wish the casket to be draped with the flag, it must be properly folded and placed in the panel of the open casket. 4. The blue and stars are always to be placed over the head and left shoulder of the deceased when the casket is closed and a similar position when the casket is half open, and only the stars are to show when flag is properly folded and placed in the panel of an open casket. 5. Nothing is to set on top of the flag. Finally, if a flag is to be displayed during the funeral on a pole, it is always to be placed at the left of the casket.
