The West Babylon Union Free School District consistently works to do its part for the environment and encourages its students to make responsible choices that will positively impact its carbon footprint. The district recently completed an Energy Performance Contract with the energy service company Ameresco, which will result in an estimated first-year savings of $272,087 for the district. Ameresco has projected that the district’s guaranteed savings over an 18year period will be approximately $6,561,888. The district has also received LIPA energy efficiency rebates of $320,020 to date, and may receive more. This is a significant amount of money for the district, since the original rebate estimate, when the contract was signed, was only $57,290. The individual schools are doing their part as well. Virtual backpacks and email chains are utilized to conserve paper use, and classrooms, lunchrooms and staff rooms actively recycle. Last year, students of West Babylon Senior High School, under the advisement of Andrea Super Cable A single fiber-optic cable can carry as many as 4,000 telephone conversations as well as several television signals.

Montalvo, took part in a project in which they recycled 500 bottles in order to earn the $25 needed to adopt an animal from the World Wildlife Federation. Through their efforts, they were able to adopt a tiger. Continuing the project this year, the students focused on the animal being sponsored by the Bronx Zoo as part of its “Run for the Wild” event in which they raise money for one particular species.

Babylon Memorial Grade School students had the chance to showcase their understanding of the scientific method as they explored a variety of interesting topics leading up to this year’s science fair. Working over the course of several months, the students had the chance to select an item of interest to them and conduct individual research projects to explore a scientific question they had about that topic. Projects ranged from social and environmental issues to those involving chemical reactions. You wouldn’t think packing groceries into a shopping bag would require, I don’t know, a degree in rocket science – but apparently, this task is much more complex than it seems, causing me to leave the supermarket shaking my head in amazement almost every time. For starters, there is no need to shove about 40 pounds worth of merchandise into one bag – paper or plastic – that neither the cashier, nor I, nor any human being can possibly lift without developing a hernia. Secondly, placing two or three items in the same said bag is equally absurd. The contents of one shopping cart need not, under any circumstances, be divided among 17 bags, I can assure you. And then we have the arrangement of the items within the bags… Granted, I’ve never

worked in a grocery store and I’m not sure if there is some particular protocol for packing; however, I’m fairly certain that items like bread, eggs and produce should not be placed underneath bottles of soda, jars and cans. Just a hunch. The best part of it all is that, knowing this has been a recurring issue, I attempt to race through the checkout line, packing as many bags as humanly possible myself to avoid such problems. But inevitably, there always comes a point when the cashier feels the need to jump in – and downhill it all goes. I mean, you can clearly see the way I fit as much as possible, mixing heavy items on the bottom with the lighter ones on top. Again, not rocket science. Just common sense. But no sooner has the cashier grabbed a bag then it is promptly filled with three bottles of soda piled on top of a loaf of bread and some fruit and vegetables. You

didn’t want to actually eat that stuff, did you? Nah, not at all, keep piling it on. Better yet, why not put each item in its own bag? I’ve gotten to the point that I will stand there and rearrange the items into a more acceptable combination before leaving the store, then hand over the 5 or 6 leftover bags which I no longer need. Who cares if I’m holding up the line. Take the hint. Watch and learn. It’s really not difficult; it just requires a minimal effort, which shouldn’t be too much to ask. If it happened once, I could deal with it. Twice, I would be slightly irritated. But every time, every store, every cashier… is there a special training school for this sort of thing? And if so, what qualifies as a passing grade, not dropping anything? Guess we’ll leave that to the customer as they’re struggling with their 40-pound bag out to the car.

The West Babylon Union Free School District is pleased to congratulate South Bay Elementary School kindergarten student Joseph Dispigno on receiving a certificate of achievement from Brookhaven National Lab in recognition of his recent success during the Brookhaven National Lab Science Fair. Joseph’s project, “No More Germs,” tested to see whether hand sanitizer or soap gets rid of more germs. He concluded that hand sanitizer was more effective. “Joseph was very excited to share his ribbon with the class,” remarked kindergarten teacher Debra McGuire. “He had a wonderful experience with his first science fair and we are all very proud of his accomplishment.”
