Hands-Only CPR has just two simple steps: If you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse, (1) Call 9-1-1; and (2) Push hard and fast in the center of the chest. During CPR, you should push on the chest at a rate of at least 100 compressions per minute. West Babylon Senior High School studentmusician Alexa Lucchesse has been nominated for a Gershwin Award. The Gershwin Awards were established by Camp Broadway LLC to provide New York Area students with the opportunity to participate in the National High School Musical Theater Awards. Alexa is one of six students on Long Island and one of 45 students from the New York area to be nominated for this prestigious award based on her outstanding performance in the school’s production of the “Wizard of Oz.” On May 30th, Alexa

will travel to Chelsea Studios in New York City to participate in a daylong audition by a team of Broadway coaches, who will direct the nominees through a rehearsal and presentation of an original musical theater production number. A student talent showcase, which features each student actor singing a solo of a song performed in his or her high school musical, follows the ensemble performance. A panel of industry professionals will then select two Gershwin Award winners, Best Leading Actor/Actress in a Musical, who will represent the New York metro area in

the National High School Musical Theater Awards, held at the Minskoff Theatre on June 29th, following an all-expenses paid five-day musical theater intensive workshop held at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts Studio on Broadway. During the 20142015 school year, Alexa was designated as a Nassau Music Educators Association All-County vocalist and a New York State School Music Association All-State vocalist for the women’s chorus. In addition, she played the leading role of Dorothy in the “Wizard of Oz.”

FBI Program Qualifier Margaret McKeever, a freshman at North Babylon High School in the North Babylon School District, has been selected to attend a Youth Leadership Program hosted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy Associates (FBINAA), a premier law enforcement training agency. The FBINAA hosts its prestigious weeklong program annually.

McKeever is one of just two students selected within the New York Eastern Canada chapter, and one of only 60 selected worldwide. There are a number of criteria McKeever needed to meet in order to qualify: the program is open to students 14-16 years old, who have demonstrated high academic standards and good citizenship, and who are of high moral character. The student must also be nominated

by a FBINAA graduate in good standing. McKeever interviewed with chapter representatives and a selection committee before the FBINAA and program coordinator decided to offer her the opportunity of a lifetime. McKeever will attend the 17th session of the FBINAA Youth Leadership Program on June 13th-20th in Quantico, Virginia.

The space, which was previously occupied by a class, was transformed this

winter with the guidance of first-grade teacher Bernadette Forthmuller and the PTA. While open to all grade levels, the first-grade teachers are collaborating regularly to plan experiments tied to enhance classroom curriculum and challenge students to build upon

their critical thinking skills. Recent projects had students explore properties of matter and observe and research hermit crabs. Experiments often integrate technology and afford the students the opportunity to use the lab’s Google Chromebooks.

Students at Marion G. Vedder Elementary School in the North Babylon School District honored important people in their lives with a medley of choral performances on Special Person’s Day. The annual event’s theme for 2015 was “Broadway Musicals,” and featured students singing songs from popular theatrical shows. Students

in each grade from kindergarten through fifth-grade sang “Do-ReMi” from Sound of Music, “Let it Go” from Frozen, “Tomorrow” from Annie, “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” from The Lion King, “Put on a Happy Face,” from Bye Bye Birdie and “Green Eggs and Ham” from Seussical, respectively. HONORING HEROES - Students from Saints Cyril and Methodius Elementary School marched in Deer Park’s Memorial Day Parade, organized by the Edward K. Peisker Veterans of Foreign War Post No. 5348 in Deer Park. The weather made for a perfect day, filled with memorials of our fallen heroes. Many SSCM students joined, some bearing SSCM’s school banner, some joining other local groups in which they participate - girl scouts, twirlers and more. CPR & AED Awareness Week

CROWNING MASS - First Holy Communion students at Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park had an opportunity to don their lovely Communion outfits again this month in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Following their first Holy Communion by offering their devotions to the Blessed Mother seemed a perfect way to honor Mary during this month of Mother’s Day celebrations. Students adorned Mary in a crown of flowers, symbolizing recognition of Mary as queen of heaven and earth. The students took each of their responsibilities very seriously, as they stepped up to read responsorial psalms, bring the gifts of blood and wine or beautify the altar with flowers and the sweetest montage of pictures of each Communicant with their own mothers.

In September of 2007, Congress designated the first week in June as National CPR & AED Awareness Week. This year, the week falls from June 1st7th. The week highlights how lives can be saved when more people know CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and how to use an AED (Automated External Defibrillator). The American Heart Association (AHA) urges the public to be prepared for cardiac emergencies, and for good reason. Plain and simple, CPR when started immediately in an emergency situation, saves lives. Each year over 400,000 people die from Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). Over 80 percent of these emergencies occur in the home. Unfortunately many bystanders do not

initiate CPR, possibly because they do not want to get involved, or possibly because they do not know what to do. More than 92 percent of cardiac arrest victims do not survive to be discharged. However, these scenarios could be quite different. A person’s survival rate increases by more than double when CPR is initiated immediately. In situations where CPR and defibrillation is provided within five to seven minutes, the survival rate is as high as 35-40 percent. The bystander can no longer be the bystander; he or she must become the FIRST RESPONDER!
