Helpful Donation Shelter Island High School students, along with group advisor Janine Mahoney, have been long time supporters and volunteers of Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk’s Student Build Program. Most recently, the district received a donation from Shelter Island Presbyterian Church in the amount of $1,300, which they gifted to Habitat. Over

the years, the school has raised more than $9,000 and hundreds of SIHS students have participated in the program. In addition to their volunteer efforts the school has donated new building supplies and tools to Habitat projects. Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk encourages youth of all ages to get involved in the Long Island community. Each year,

Eyes On The Sky At this time of year, I usually write a column on the importance of appreciating Memorial Day for its intended purpose, to honor those who have served and sacrificed. Too easily do we as a society become swept up in the “unofficial summer kickoff” mentality, of BBQs and pool openings and the beginning of beach season. That said, there is one other Memorial Day tradition that I do truly enjoy, which mixes the significance of the occasion with some good oldfashioned fun in the sun. I am speaking of the Jones Beach Air Show, held each year on the Saturday and Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. I’ve been attending the

show for the last seven years or so, enjoying the alternating featured performances of both the Thunderbirds and the Blue Angels. As a member of the press, I was even lucky enough to have the opportunity a few years back to meet and greet the Blue Angels’ pilots at an exclusive preview held at Republic Airport. What an extraordinary experience! The great part is that the show never gets old. The camaraderie of sitting on the sand, eyes to the sky, with tens of thousands of fellow spectators is something special. Over the last several years, I have endured everything from severe sunburns to shivering under layers of clothing, buried under my beach blanket… from breezing right in to a prime oceanfront spot to being

forced to park on the median of Ocean Parkway after sitting in traffic for hours. Each year, no matter the conditions, I have been able to capture stunning photographs and, most importantly, to make happy, lasting memories with friends. Sure, it may be a frivolous, fun day at the beach; but ultimately, we are appreciating the grand spectacle of our military aircraft at its finest. It is a beautiful site to behold, one that everyone should make a point of taking in at least once in his or her lives. This weekend, I plan to join the masses in making my way to Jones Beach once again – armed with sunscreen, and several extra layers of clothing – just in case. Happy Summer to all!

Student Spotlight

Science Scholar Babylon School District students showcased their original research projects as they competed in this year’s Covantage EcoTech Scholarship Contest. As a result of their entries, Babylon Memorial Grade School sixth-grader Ethan Schubart captured first place and Babylon High School junior Ryan Cosgro earned fourth place. Ethan’s project was titled “Do gas powered leaf blowers affect air quality?”

and Ryan’s project, “Determining the optimal conditions for biolipid production in Chlorella pyrendiosa,” worked to determine under what conditions photosynthetic Chlorella algae are best able to produce a biolipid that could then be processed into a novel type of biofuel and help reduce dependency on fossil fuels. Both students were awarded scholarship monies for their winning

entries. The contest is open to students’ grades 6-12 in school districts within the Town of Babylon that produced science projects focused on renewable energy, greenhouse gas reduction, development of alternative materials or anything to reduce global warming and environmental degradation.

Scholarship Recipient West Babylon Senior High School student Sage Chasen is the recipient of the Mayor E. Donald Conroy Scholarship totaling $10,000 for his community service and scholastic record. He will be honored at the awards dinner, being held at the Venetian Yacht Club on June 3rd. The goal of the Mayor E. Donald Conroy Scholarship is to recognize and award high school seniors and Babylon Village residents, who have demonstrated service to the community in the unselfish way exemplified by the former mayor. After service in World War

II, Conroy returned to Babylon to serve as a police officer, volunteer fire fighter and as chief of the Babylon Fire Department. He comforted the sick in hospitals, raised funds for hospice and volunteered his time to a myriad of community events and activities. His vision was to make Babylon a wonderful place to reside. During his tenure as mayor, Conroy expanded the Village pool, revitalized the train station, and erected the September 11th Memorial Garden, to name a few projects. Sage utilizes his passion for music to improve the environment and the lives

of the elderly. Through his a cappella group, a cappella Performers Opposing Pollution, Sage performs and spreads the message to reduce human footprints on the world by decreasing pollution. He also uses his instrumental skills through his organization, Piano for Patients, playing piano for residents in local nursing homes. Sage will be attending LeHigh University this fall, where he will pursue his studies in engineering and music production. The West Babylon School District congratulates Sage on this outstanding accomplishment.

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) was awarded a $25,000 grant from the Long Island Community Foundation for the Military Families in Training (M-FIT) Program. Given the stressful nature of the military and the traumatizing experiences of war, many veterans experience psychological distress that is complicated by substance use. Many of these veterans are experiencing serious mental health concerns including substance use disorders (SUD) posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury, depression and serious psychological distress (SPD). Due to the challenge of engaging veterans, LICADD will work to increase awareness of the M-FIT program to reach more veterans and their family members, expand partnerships and work towards removing the stigma associated with mental health needs in the military.
