The students took a field trip to United Skates of America in Seaford on May 18th to learn about the science of the roller skate. A great time was had by all in attendance at this fun and educational outing.

Cardboard shoes, Dorito dresses and paper towel roll hairclips are just some of the few designs that made it to the runway at the Babylon Memorial Grade School Trash to Fashion Show on May 5th. Sixth-graders have been spending the last few weeks conceptualizing, designing

and fabricating clothing out of discarded items found in the garbage can. They used these recycled treasures to create oneof-a-kind fashions for the runway. Babylon Memorial Grade School librarian Lisa Lindeman, art teacher Pat Stork and special education

As thousands of Long Islanders head to the beach to enjoy the sun, surf and sand, we reflect on the first five months of the year… how has your 2016 been so far? Is it headed in the right direction? Are there still goals left to attain? What

does the remainder of the year hold in store? Of course, we can only predict so much, direct our fate to a degree; but, with that, our actions – or inaction, as the case may be – are what set the precedence for how our days will unfold. A little positive momentum goes a long way in determining the course of weeks, months, even entire years. One small step in the right direction is all it takes to turn things around. And with that, spring is the perfect time to look forward, that season of rebirth and growth, of blossoming flowers and greening grass, of eggs hatching and bunnies

frolicking, of pools opening and bathing suits and flip flops seeing the light of day. Speaking of, those late afternoons and early evenings of golden sunlight do wonders for the psyche – how nice to leave work and still have that sunset glow to drive home by. And so we turn the page on May, look ahead to June and all that summer beckons. SHARING & LEARNING - First-graders at John F. Kennedy Elementary School in the West Babylon School District shared in a writing celebration with their kindergarten peers on May 18th. The kindergarten students visited the first-grade writers to celebrate their published opinion writing pieces. Babylon Junior-Senior High School students in Steve Silipo’s physics classes attended Physics Day at Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey on April 22nd. Using the preselected rides as their laboratory, students collected real time data on their cell phones. During their time at the park, they made valuable connections between STEM disciplines “It was a unique opportunity for the students to engage in performance-

based tasks with realworld applications that demonstrate the meaningful application of knowledge and skills that they have been discussing in class throughout the year,” Silipo said. Babylon students spent the day collecting data using cutting edge technology. They had access to apps that analyze video, measure distance and even used a three-axis accelerometer app. “This is the type of learning experience that truly

certified in both biology and chemistry and spent many summers working at Brookhaven National Laboratory as well as conducting her own research in the Costa Rican rainforest. Coming back to Babylon Junior-Senior High School, she was soon the driving force behind starting the district’s popular science research program. Students as young as eighth grade can enter into the program, and many who matriculate go on to study research in their post-secondary years. Throughout the years, the research pathway has grown considerably, where serious high school science research students have been conducting handson research projects on a variety of complex topics. In addition, Ms. Birone enhances the research program experience with multiple opportunities for her students to work in the field alongside practitioners. Whether it is ongoing visitations and collaborative study while at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, going behind the scenes at Stony Brook University’s Cancer Research Center or inviting world-renowned

researchers into her classroom, her students always walk away with an authentic learning experience. Ms. Birone was also recognized and selected as a top educator in the state with her acceptance into the prestigious New York State Master Teacher program. The Master Teacher program is designed to create a statewide network of the highest-performing STEM teachers who are also dedicated to sharing expertise with peers and deepening their own scholastic and professional development. “The entire Babylon educational community is extremely proud of the hard work and dedication of Claire Birone,” Ms. Rozzi said. “She is seen as an instructional leader within our district and continues to set the bar high for Babylon research. New Arrivals Heather Paganica’s third-grade classroom at Tooker Avenue Elementary School in the West Babylon School District is brimming with handson learning activities as students are anxiously awaiting the arrival of the duck eggs they have been incubating for the last month. For the past five years, Ms. Paganica has been traveling to a farm on

eastern Long Island and bringing back duck eggs that are almost ready to hatch for the classroom. Students have been learning about ducks, how they form in their eggs and have the opportunity to watch the ducklings emerge from their shells along with their first few days of life. But after the farm closed last year, Ms. Paganica located a new farm that

could get the eggs but under different circumstances. She borrowed an incubator from the farm owners and incubated the eggs for the full 28 days. This year, for the second time, Ms. Paganica and her class are incubating their eggs for the full 28 days in her brand new incubator, complete with an egg turner, in her classroom. NYS Senator Phil Boyle and his Senate colleagues welcomed cadets for the Legislature’s 64th Annual West Point Day in Albany on May 5th. The West Point Academy is an internationally recognized institution for its academic, military, and physical excellence. The institution strives to admit

the best and brightest each year to ensure that the classrooms are pieces of intellectual rigor and stimulation. Senator Boyle proudly honored two West Point Cadets from his district; Cadet Shannon Wisseman (class of 2018) who resides in Sayville, and Cadet Jordan Bailey (class of

2019) who resides in West Babylon. Senator Boyle stated that he felt these individuals embodied the leadership qualities West Point seeks in its students and looks forward to the work they will accomplish in the military, private or public sector.

Lesson in History Fifth-grade girls at South Bay Elementary School in the West Babylon School District learned about growing up in the 1700s during an American Girl doll-themed after-school special program on May 6th. Facilitated by South Bay school psychologist Laure Loughlin, the event

began with a movie about a young girl, Felicity, growing up in the 1700s, when the movement toward breaking away from British rule was growing. The students learned about loyalty, independence and the taxes on tea. They also enjoyed a tea party and spoke about the clothing styles during this

time period, which Ms. Loughlin learned from a historian at an American Girl event in New York City. The fifth-graders were also able to see period carriages, beds, nightstands and accessories, as well as a dining table and different tea sets.

Three Babylon-Junior Senior High School research students were awarded scholarships for their research and work on green projects as part of the Babylon Covantage EcoTech Scholarship Contest. They were presented with their awards on May 7th at the Town of Babylon’s Earth Day celebration at Town Hall. Babylon-Junior Senior High School senior Jack Corcoran’s project, “The Effect of Heat on the Potency of Pheromone Trails Produced by Pogonomyrmex barbatus,”

placed third overall, earning him a prize of $500. He studied how rising global temperatures impact pheromone signaling in harvester ants. Babylon-Junior Senior High School juniors Samuel Caponi and Gerard Gravina’s team project, “The Effects of Salt Tolerant Bacteria on the Growth of Pisum sativum in a High Salinity Environment,” placed seventh overall and earned them a scholarship of $125 each. The team forced a novel symbiotic relationship between pea plants and soil bacteria that enables these non-

salt tolerant plants to withstand and thrive after salt water flooding has taken place. The Babylon Covantage EcoTech Scholarship Contest is designed to encourage students who are conducting science fair projects or advanced study projects in environmental science courses to focus on renewable energy sources, greenhouse gas reduction, development of alternative building materials or any other means to reduce global warming and environmental degradation.

North Babylon High School’s Academic Team traveled to Washington, D.C. to compete in the National History Bowl and Bee and U.S. Geography Bee — the third time the district has been represented at this prestigious event. The team competed against 161 of the top varsity and 108 of the top junior varsity quiz bowl teams across the nation. Noah Rothstein

competed in the varsity level U.S. Geography Bee and finished 25th of 88 players. Matthew Pecoraro competed in the junior varsity level U.S. History Bee, and Adam Farr competed in the varsity level U.S. History Bee. Pecoraro also participated in the junior varsity History Bee. In the National History Bowl — a team competition — both the varsity and junior

varsity North Babylon teams earned records of 4-1, and placed sixth and fifth in their respective upper brackets. Haggai Anglade participated in the consolation History Bee and placed first. The Academic Team’s accomplishments are testaments to all the hard work and dedication the members and adviser Erin Casserly have shown throughout the year.

A Work of Art involved and how they overcame many obstacles, the students were tasked with making their own Freedom Quilt. The class researched designs from old quilts and also read “Sweet Clara’s Freedom Quilt” to get inspiration for their own patches. The fifth-graders choose one element from that period of time and designed a square piece of a quilt using felt and glue.

Babylon Memorial Grade School art teacher Pat Stork worked with the class in their designs, which ranged from the North Star, depictions of Harriet Tubman and Joe “Pegleg” Morgan to the Bear Claw and Monkey Wrench symbols. Stork took the squares and sewed them together to form their own Freedom Quilt, which will hang outside the school’s cafeteria.

Babylon Memorial Grade School held its annual walkathon to support the ALS Ride for Life organization to raise money and awareness for Lou Gehrig’s disease on May 5th. Student participants donated $1 to spend their recess walking the perimeter of the school. On May 12th, students will again have the opportunity

to support the cause by donating $1 to “put ALS to sleep” by wearing their pajamas to school. All donations will be presented to Chris Pendergast and ALS Ride for Life when they make their annual ride from East Hampton to Manhattan on May 17th, stopping at Babylon Memorial Grade School and Babylon JuniorSenior High School. The

donations help families with medical expenses and fund research efforts for ALS. In March, students and staff at Babylon Memorial Grade School attended a presentation about the importance of perseverance and hard work, hosted by representatives from the organization.

Top Honors Seven Babylon JuniorSenior High School students, accompanied by adviser and Babylon School District business chairperson Claire Reilly, traveled to Nashville, Tennessee, from April 23rd-26th to compete at the DECA International Career Development Conference. In order to compete in this event, students had to qualify by placing at the state level in Rochester,

N.Y., in March. There were more than 18,000 students from all over the country competing at the international competition. The team of Michael Logan and Jack Corcoran placed first in the Travel and Tourism category. Ryan Cosgro came in second place in Restaurant and Food Service Management, while Agnes Goldin placed fifth in Principles of Hospitality. In the Visual Advertising

category, Maggie Higgins came in first place and Jillian Gaare placed third. Quinn LaRock scored fifth place in Sports and Entertainment Marketing. DECA is a cocurricular club that focuses on preparing students for careers in business, entrepreneurship, marketing and finance. DECA students are also enrolled in business classes at Babylon Junior-Senior High School.

After learning all about the Earth and how to protect it, kindergartners in Jennifer Brooks’ class at Babylon Elementary School brainstormed different ways to reduce, reuse and recycle items. The students were tasked with hunting through their recycle bins at home and finding a way to

repurpose the item. They were quite creative with their recycling projects, making a bank out of an old coffee can, a vase out of a discarded glass bottle and even a jet pack from an old cardboard box.
