Several weeks ago, shortly after the passing of my “Pal,” my Grandpa, we discovered what appeared to be a small bird’s nest nestled under the awning in the backyard. Assuming it was just a collection of twigsin-progress, I gingerly climbed on top of a chair to peek inside, only to find three beautiful blue eggs, clearly from the likes of a robin. No one was certain how long it had been there, though obviously enough time for the mama bird to lay these eggs. Not wanting to disturb the carefully orchestrated set-up, we left everything as it was and waited – from a safe distance – to see if the mother would return. Well, return she did and, within a few days, a fourth egg appeared in the nest, as she guarded her stash, ﬂeeing only brieﬂy upon any human sightings.

A few days later, four fuzzy little hatchlings resided in the nest, napping in a pile of soft, pulsating fur, eyes not quite open, occasionally opening their beaks in case food happened to be lurking nearby. As of this writing, the four are still happily cohabitating, the fuzz gradually beginning to be filled in with soft gray feathers, the eyes fully open and alert, the beaks ready and waiting for mama’s next meal delivery. According to most references, it may be as little as a week before these little chicks are ready to ﬂy off on their own. And such is the circle of life… How wonderful to be able to witness it right in Grandma and Grandpa’s backyard, especially at this time. There are those who believe in signs – for those, I don’t think you could ask for a clearer indication that this special delivery was intended just for us, right here, right now.

Special Delivery Now, you may be wondering, what’s the big deal? It’s spring, ‘tis the season for the birds and the bees and all of nature to frolic and procreate. While this is true, it must be noted that, in the 55 years my grandparents resided in this house, there were most likely exactly zero nests successful built by any birds. Launching into Learning Babylon Elementary School students designed and tested their own catapults on April 28th as part of a hands-on experiment using the forces of motion and the effects of gravity. Second-graders in Beth Dieterich’s class have SEASON STARTS - Congressman Pete King wishes the players, parents and coaches been writing lab reports, hypotheses of the Babylon Little League good luck on the upcoming season during their annual generating “Opening Day” ceremony. The Congressman commended the Babylon residents for fostering a great sense of community pride during the event.

Using popsicle sticks, tape, rubber bands, plastic spoons and a wooden block, the second-graders worked in teams of three to build a catapult. The groups then

tested their designs using a cotton ball and Ping-Pong ball after making educated predications on which ball would launch the furthest distance. After carefully measuring and recording their results, the second-graders will write lab reports based on their findings.

On Tuesday, May 3rd, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin J. McCaffrey attended the Eagle Scout Court of Honor for Troop 104’s Joseph Trifaro and Joseph Valenti. The ceremony took place at the American Legion Post 94 in Babylon and was attended by representatives from the Town of Babylon, law enforcement and the mayor as well as both Eagle Scouts’ family and friends. Joseph Trifaro and Joseph Valenti were Troop 104’s 48th and 49th Eagle Scouts respectively. They had begun scouting together as cub scouts and reached Boy Scout’s highest achievement on Tuesday in part due to the support they have given each other throughout their careers. While both Trifaro’s and Valenti’s careers in scouting reached a culmination on Tuesday, it has been marked with achievements since the beginning. Respectively, they hold 38 and 40 merit badges each, in fields such as aviation, emergency preparedness, family life and personal fitness. Each year, in line with this program, the Milwaukee Public Museum offers schools the opportunity to share projects created by students who have participated in their Video Conferences. SSCM’s Fifth Grade teacher, Mrs. Nicole

Congro tasked students with thinking through what they’d absorbed during the session and transform the story into a 4-panel story board of their own creation. The students’ designs were wide and varied and showed how much they’d taken away from their faraway instructors in order to showcase their creativity and round out this virtual activity to make it a more authentic hands-on learning experience. Students from all across the country submit projects for consideration to the museum as part of this program, so the news was extra exciting that for the second year in a row, a number of projects from SSCM students have been selected and are on display in the museum’s Student Art Exhibit nearly 1,000 miles away! The event, which is sponsored by the Town of Babylon and the Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts (BACCA), featured an exhibit of artwork from students representing Babylon Village School District, Farmingdale State College, and Dowling

College. 26 students were the recipients of scholarship awards for their art. Supervisor Schaffer commended the scholarship recipients for their impressive artwork.
