A completely original creation of Coney Island USA, the Mermaid Parade is the nation’s largest art parade and the official kickoff to summer in New York City. A celebration of the ancient mythology of the summer solstice mixed with seaside honky-tonk rituals, the Mermaid Parade showcases thousands of diverse and creative marchers cheered on by hundreds of thousands of eager fans. People come from all over the five boroughs and beyond, opening the summer season with incredible art, entrepreneurial spirit, and community pride. “What makes the Mermaid Parade so special is the fact that it was invented by artists, but is meant for everyone. It has no ethnic, religious, or commercial aims. It highlights pageantry and the vision of the masses,” said Dick D. Zigun, Artistic Director and Mermaid Parade creator. “This parade - and Coney Island itself - is a place where people from all walks of life come together, take part in a little bit of New York history, and can truly be themselves - whatever form that may take.” Donations to the “Feed the Mermaids” campaign will go towards planning and execution of the entire parade, including logistics and security; city permits; insurance; equipment; general supplies; porta potties; tents; truck rentals; and support for the tireless team of 450+ volunteers and staff whose flawless execution brings the parade to life every year. I recently had the opportunity to attend a journalism forum at The Paley Center for Media in Manhattan. Titled “The Future of Local News: Trust, Truth & The Bottom Line,” this summit brought together some of the best and the brightest in the industry to discuss what many have summarily dismissed as a dying field. I am happy to report that, after listening to several engaging panels touching on everything from politics to nonprofit upstarts to the pros and cons of social media in the information age, I came away with an even deeper sense of confidence that journalism is, in fact, here to stay. Sure, the fourth estate may have hit some bumps in the road of late; but, in essence, these
obstacles have only helped those truly reputable media outlets to gain a stronger foothold. Too much of anything is a bad thing; this is a commonly held opinion. But, to be able to harness this influx of information and utilize it in such a way that is beneficial, well, that is a opportunity that should not be squandered. It may take time and research to discern what is truly valuable and accurate information, but why shouldn’t we devote that kind of effort to educating ourselves? It hardly seems a steep price to pay, in my estimation. The hope is that, as the sources of “news” multiply and morph, future generations will increasingly become experts at determining what

is reliable. Not to throw the phrase back in my day around too lightly but… back when I was in college, media was pretty much defined as print or broadcast; newspapers, magazines, television, radio. Social media was only just beginning to take off, and its potential as a legitimate source of news – breaking or otherwise – was as yet unanticipated. Fast forward to the present day, when your average elementary school student is “plugged in” to his/her own cell phone throughout the day. My, how times have changed. Regardless of whether we support this development, the fact is - it’s happening. Best to jump on board and learn to harness the power of the media. It’s here to stay.

After all I have seen and all I have heard, I have come to the conclusion there isn’t ever going to be a satisfactory answer to the question Why? I am also convinced the answer to the questions WHY? Do exist, just not on this earth. And when we rejoin our loved ones and the question Why? could be answered. The answer will no longer matter to us.
