Student Simulation In celebration of Earth Day, West Babylon students have been studying the environment and how human actions can affect the eco-system. Student scientists in Athena Iliou’s fifth-grade class at Santapogue Elementary School learned about the devastating effects that oil spills have on the environment, along with commonly used methods for cleanup. Creating a simulated oil spill, they investigated how oil can spread quickly over water and determined the most effective methods of

clean up. The students first read information on the BP Deep Horizon and Exxon Valdez oil spill disasters. They subsequently created an oil spill by pouring dyed vegetable oil into a pan of water. The students also placed rocks, a plant sprig, pipe cleaner animals and a couple of feathers at the edge of the pan to represent wildlife and shoreline fauna. A straw was then used to blow the oil around to represent how wind and waves could spread an oil slick. The second part of

the lesson included an observation of the effects on their created environments, and noted that oil can get trapped under rocks and shoreline and remain there indefinitely, even after a spill is believed to have been cleaned up. Using a variety of materials, such as eye droppers, paper towels, cotton balls, rubber bands and yarn — items that could work in a similar fashion to the methods the students learned about — they determined the most effective methods for cleanup.

Babylon Junior-Senior High School’s National Art Honor Society members showcased their creativity as several students took part in this year’s Vans custom culture contest. For their submission, members Mabel Ye, Christina Krisberg,

Paige Wolny and Olivia Schneider, designed a blank pair of Vans sneakers based on a theme. The students’ designs were connected by the universal idea of water, but also included inspirations from the areas of art, music, board sports and local flavor. If selected

as one of the 50 national contenders, the students designs will be voted on by the public via the Vans custom culture website. This is the fifth year the NAHS has participated in the event. More than 1,000 schools participate nationwide.

RETIREE HONORED - The Suffolk County Legislature honored long-time county employee Carolyn E. Fahey on her retirement after more than 35 years of service to Suffolk County. Mrs. Fahey spent her county career in three departments, County Executive, Department of Health Services and the last 22 in as an intergovernmental Relations Coordinator for the Department of Economic Development.

MATH-A-THON SUCCESS - Students at Marion G. Vedder Elementary School participated in the St. Jude’s Math-A-Thon this past March. Mrs. Jennifer Kreuscher, a first grade teacher, coordinated the event. Acing The Quizzes The North Babylon Academic Team ‘s varsity and junior varsity quiz bowl groups competed in the Long Island Regional Quiz Bowl Playoff tournament, and both achieved high

rankings. Following their performances, both teams are ranked first in Southwestern Suffolk County. The junior varsity group, comprised of

captains Zachary Thomas and Haggai Anglade, and freshmen Noah Rothstein, Matthew Pecoraro and Brett Manzo, is ranked third place on Long Island.

As a follow up to an in school assembly program with members of the Ride for Life organization, Babylon Memorial Grade School students and staff organized several fundraising activities to support the cause this

spring. They sported comfortable pajamas during a “Put ALS to Sleep” themed day and took part in a walk-a-thon during recess periods. Students who wished to participate in the events donated $1 to the cause.

Students also worked to create colorful signs to support the Ride for Life’s efforts, which they plan to hold as the mission passes the school in May during their annual journey.

West Babylon fifthgraders in Kelly DeCarlo’s class at South Bay Elementary School are studying owl pellets as part of their science curriculum. The class first learned that indigestible materials

eaten by owls, including teeth, feathers, claws and skulls, are excreted in the form of pellets. As part of the activity, the students were instructed to catalog their findings, much like an archeologist or museum curator. Pictured is Gianna

On Friday, April 24th, over 200 volunteers dispersed throughout Babylon to take part in the Town’s campaign to clean roadways and public spaces of litter in a celebration of community pride, collecting 12,290 pounds of garbage (or the weight of a full grown elephant). This anti-litter campaign coordinated by Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Beautification Director Florence Findley and Assistant Deputy County Executive Tim Sini, all of whom were concerned about unsightly refuse appearing in the community. Supervisor Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and Assistant Deputy County Executive Tim Sini took part in the clean-up themselves, helping with efforts on Sylvan Road, Colonial Springs Road

and Santapogue Creek respectively. “Littering not only decreases our quality of life and brings down property values but also has a significant negative impact on community morale,” said Supervisor Schaffer. “I was proud to join with so many volunteers, including dozens of Town employees, to help do our part in cleaning unsightly trash from our cherished Town. I strongly encourage all residents to do their part to help reduce litter in our area as we continue to keep Babylon beautiful.” A kick-off breakfast was held at Town Hall in Lindenhurst, where volunteers consisting of Town employees and officials, PSEG employees, students from Deer Park High School and Suffolk Community College, representatives from local

7-11 establishments, and various community organizations were grouped into teams and assigned areas throughout the Town, including along Montauk Highway, Straight Path, New Highway, and Ketcham’s Creek. Following the clean-up, volunteers were treated to a barbeque lunch donated by Outback Steakhouse. All garbage collected was weighed by the Town’s Department of Public Works and at the end of the day, over 12,000 pounds, or 6 tons, of litter was removed from ten sites throughout the Town. The anti-litter campaign is a component of the Town of Babylon’s Beautification Program, which organizes numerous initiatives including Adopt-aHighway, Adopt-a-Spot, and Global Youth Service Day.

Babylon Elementary School kindergarten and second-grade students are working to become published authors during their studies with school media specialist, Teri Polis. To complement the grade-level’s science curriculum and upcoming trip to the aquarium, the kindergarten students researched aquatic animals using iPads.

They investigated and documented information about the animals’ bodies, habitat, diet and life cycles before creating written statements to share in a class ebook. They also sketched original drawings depicting their ocean animals and recorded a voice over to highlight their research findings. The second grade classes completed a similar ebook

I’m sorry, this seat is taken. We’ve all done it. In a crowded movie theatre, a packed-to-capacity train… sometimes, our desire for personal space wins out over common courtesy. I’m not proud of it, but, well, I’m not entirely ashamed of it either. Case in point: Just last week, my cousin and I ventured out to one of several opening night screenings of The Avengers, Marvel’s latest in a long line of comic-inspired blockbusters. Like most others in attendance, we arrived at the theatre a full 45 minutes before show time in order to avoid sitting in the front row, straining to

see the top of the screen. After scoring two relatively centered seats in the last row, I strategically placed my jacket and pocketbook on the neighboring chair. Fortyfive minutes elapsed. The theatre filled in quickly, but there were still plenty of other options aside from the one single seat I had “saved.” About 20 minutes into the previews, there it was – two stragglers wandered in, loudly discussing where to sit, with one pointing out several suitable options as the other continued to climb up to the last row, our row. “Is that seat taken?” the one, more irritating individual bellowed, while literally standing in front of
