Children Helping Children Benihana Inc., the nation’s leading operator of Japanese theme and sushi restaurants, has officially kicked off the sixth annual “Children Helping Children” Coloring Contest as part of its Children’s Day activities. West Babylon High School’s robotics club competition teams ended a successful season and are now preparing for next year’s competitions. The 2013-2014 season concluded with a firstplace alliance for the gold competition team during the FTC Long Island Qualifying Tournament, which qualified them for the NYC/Long Island Regional Championship competition at the NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering. In March, the club’s gold and blue teams participated in the FIRST Tech Challenge at Syosset High School, a new experience for the club members. The teams designed, programmed and built two different robots and competed against 22 teams from across Long Island. Golf Classic Set

Spring was in the air as kindergarten students in Yvonne Spilka’s class teamed up with their third-grade buddies from Nancy Turano’s class at Santapogue Elementary School in West Babylon to create papier-mâché eggs.

This popular craft consists of wrapping a form, in this case an oval egg, with paper pieces bound with starch and glue. The students utilized their cutting, measuring and creative skills to create colorful eggs that were

displayed for all of their peers. Creating papier-mâché eggs was a culminating activity for lessons learned about animals that lay eggs naturally.

Lighting It Up Blue World Autism Day, celebrated on April 2nd, prompted various activities throughout the month for West Babylon High School students who are working to raise awareness of this condition that affects one out of 68 children. During the day’s fundraising

activities, students and staff raised approximately $5,000 for autism research. Students and staff sported blue T-shirts to show their support for the cause, and banners were placed throughout the school. Athletic teams wore autism awareness shirts,

Recently, County Executive Bellone, Chief Burke and Suffolk County Stop DWI representatives honored twenty-three Police Officers for making the most DWI arrests in Suffolk County. The prestigious ceremony, held at the Suffolk County Police Academy, honored all the officers and awarded one officer with the Top Cop award after making 118 arrests this year. This year the Top Cop honor was bestowed upon Timothy Murphy of the Riverhead Police Department. “It is extremely important to us that motorists who are driving while intoxicated are stopped,” said Steve Bellone, Suffolk County Executive. “DWI tragedies don’t just affect those involved, they impact the families of victims as well.” Suffolk County police agencies made over 5692 arrests in 2013 and more than 15,000 DWI arrests in the past 3 years. In 2013, 51 people were killed in Suffolk County by the reckless behavior of drunk drivers as compared to 47 the previous year. Although, DWI fatalities have declined by 56% since 1979, Suffolk County recognizes that many challenges remain and will continue to be vigilant. “Suffolk County will not tolerate drunk
