MATH-A-THON - Students at Marion G. Vedder Elementary School, located in North Babylon, participated in the St. Jude Math-A-Thon. Mrs. Kreuscher, a First Grade teacher, was the coordinator who ran the event. There were over 50 children who took part in completing challenging math problems, getting sponsors, and collecting donations. The children raised $6,740 and all the money goes to St. Jude to help children who are battling cancer. All their help is greatly appreciated! Thanks for making a difference!

ME IN A BAG - Eighth graders at Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park bared their souls during insightful and interesting “Me In A Bag” presentations. Each student was tasked with bringing in a bag filled with the personal effects that sum up their lives, their faith, their families, hobbies, travels, sports, interests, pets and more. established last year. During the four-week program, students were encouraged to bring in contributions to fill hallway collection boxes, and they learned about the importance of donating for a worthy cause. Each week

was uniquely themed and provided various incentives for students to contribute to the fundraiser. The check was presented to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society at a culminating ceremony.

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s amazing the degree to which our media consumption has changed as a society through the years. In the last decade alone, from the time I graduated from C.W. Post’s Journalism program, social media has quite literally taken over – for better or worse. What was once perfectly satisfactory to read in the next morning’s paper now must be transmitted instantly across a host of media, in some cases, at the expense of accuracy. While this isn’t exactly a unique realization, it was brought to new light at the recent Society of Professional Journalists Region I Conference that I attended last week at Hofstra University. Again and again,

the same theme was revisited – how can we, as journalists, learn to be so-called “experts” on everything, able to take on any task asked of us on the ﬂy, all in an effort to transmit to the masses before the millions of others out there doing the same thing? It’s a tall order, one that, just 10 years ago, wasn’t quite so relevant. Couple that with the fact that literally anyone with a smartphone can capture an image or video, add some copy and a sound bite and, theoretically, paint him/ herself as a journalist. All it takes is the vast landscape of the Internet to take a tidbit to the masses via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, whatever; and, before you know it, you have a viral sensation that, just minutes prior, was

nothing more than gossip. Amazing, isn’t it? Take that to the next level, and it is nearly impossible to steer clear of spoiler alerts for your favorite TV shows, movies, books, anything… if you’re not planning on watching it live, you had best engage in a self-imposed media blackout until your DVR is warmed up. This, from the person who decided to wait an hour or so before catching up on last night’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy. Enough said. Ten years ago, that wouldn’t have been a problem. Like it or not, this is the world we now live in. The sooner we embrace it, learn to live with it and adapt our lives to the changing media landscape, the better.

Council has established an annual award called the “Lee Tatti Volunteer of the Year Award” given to a member in our community that emulates Lee and her dedication to the community. PASA has created the “Lee Tatti PASA Memorial Scholarship”, to be given each year to a student who gives to the community.

On June 7, 2005 the Board of Education, Central Administration, and the North Babylon High School Administration presented the Tatti Family with a special dedication ceremony naming the North Babylon High School Auditorium, “The Lee Tatti Auditorium.”
